The Spike VGX Awards will air tonight on Spike TV starting at 5PM (CST). We will be streaming live commentary on 4pp.tv and posting the trailers to the front page tonight and tomorrow.
It is still hard for me to fathom that the most commercialized and mainstream gaming event of the year is also the most highly anticipated (after E3) among core gamers. It is an event that constantly claims to be the one-stop-shop for gamers across the world where they can watch as leaders in their industry are recognized and honored. It's all fine and dandy except that up until this point, it has been a train wreck. With awards like "Best Game Fueled by Dew" (that's Mountain Dew in case you weren't aware) and glaring omissions from major categories, it has been a tough pill for enthusiasts to swallow. It HAS gotten better in the past couple years (a trend that I hope continues tonight) but I can't shake the feeling that the event will continue to exemplify the reasons that so many others refuse to take the industry seriously.
In all honesty, enthusiasts enjoy and appreciate the award show because it has become the second largest event for major game announcements every year. More big, surprising game announcements are made via the Spike Video Game Awards than almost any other event of the year. In years past, major games like The Last of Us, Metal Gear Solid 5, and Elder Scrolls V Skyrim, have all made their debut on this stage. Obviously, its easy to see why we should be excited.
Here's What We Know...
What we do know is that major games like The Witcher 3 and Titanfall will be making some sort of gameplay announcements or debut and Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime will be attending and supposedly making some sort of big announcement. Could Nintendo be preparing to show off the first new HD Zelda for the WiiU? Perhaps we'll get our first glimpse at Smash Bros? Also, it's worth noting that the Fallout 4 teaster site has been confirmed as a HOAX and Bethesda has confirmed to not be showing anything at the event. Sorry Fallout hopefuls, you will have to wait a bit longer.
I cannot wait to learn more about The Witcher 3 but I am more excited for the inevitable new game announcements. The things that we haven't heard about or seen before. The next generation has begun and i'm eager to fill up my PS4 library and maybe see that game that will work hand-in-hand with Titanfall to push me over the edge and get me to buy an Xbox One.
Oh... and I hope they make a competent award show too...

Well that was quite possibly the worst 3 hours of television I've ever seen in my life.
