If you watched the VGX Awards tonight, you were subjected to all manner of depressing moments: Geoff Keighley being relentlessly mocked for decisions made by the wardrobe department, the fact that Reggie Fils-Aime took a plane in order to show two levels too many of the new Donkey Kong game, Joel McHale's mood swings between hatred and disinterest in the event he had for some reason been invited to attend.
For a time, however, it was all okay. For a little over two minutes, we were watching No Man's Sky, the upcoming next-gen game from Joe Danger developer Hello Games. In those two minutes we saw something amazing.
The four people working at Hello Games have constructed a game in which you can literally go from the depths of the sea to the heights of space seamlessly. The trailer gives us glimpses of space combat, exploration, giant snake things, and hints at a much larger world beyond what we're shown- all wrapped in a stripped-down but eye-popping visual style which is already striking.
There is much to be revealed about this game, but this is an incredibly exciting debut and was without a doubt the highlight of what was otherwise a pretty glum night.
