IGN sat down with Josh Bridge, Executive Producer of the Xbox One exclusive Dead Rising 3, to play the first 25 minutes of the game. How does it go? Is it as gray and grimdark as people have feared?
Yes and no.
The world of the game is definitely very brown, a far cry from the eye-popping Fortune City of Dead Rising 2, and the tone is certainly played a bit more straight. A player unfamiliar with the franchise would likely be hard-pressed to believe that the unbridled campiness of the original Dead Rising was what led up to this game's point. However.
Great comedy is rooted in tragedy, so they say, and there is still ridiculousness present in the game, even if it's not shown in these 25 minutes.
That is not a screenshot of a restrained experience.
So even if the environment is brown, even if the plot is heavy, leaving the potential for comedy and weirdness up to the player isn't a bad thing at all. Juxtaposing that with the harsh environment is, in fact, often much funnier than weirdness in a world of weirdness.
Speaking for what is present in the video, there are things I quite like- that cut to the opening credits is really cool, the combat looks just slightly clunky in the Dead Rising style, and weapon customization that doesn't require a hike to a workbench is so, so welcome- and other things I'm worried about. Well, one thing I'm worried about.
That driving.
This is not a series that's about driving, and though we don't see a lot, the driving does not look all that good. This issue is further compounded by a report from Joystiq stating they experienced frame rate dips while using cars. Hopefully their use won't be forced on the player too much, but the demo demonstrates that use of a car is mandatory less than twenty minutes into the game.
But who knows? The general response has been positive, and everything is speculation until the game releases. We'll all know the truth of the matter then.

I always thought the past games were almost too goofy and colorful, but this looks like a good blend. However, actually playing the older titles got boring really fast IMO. Gameplay wise this looks very Dead Rising-ish, and it makes me worried.
