Are you a fan of LoL? Ever wanted to play as your favorite characters outside of the MoBA structure? Well now you can! League of Fighters is a fan made project setting out to turn LoL into a 2D fighting game. League of Fighters developer Instaburst has been in e-mail contact with Riot games over the project and Riot gave the answer the fans were hoping for. They will allow the game to be released so long as it remains a free to play title and not actually sold to anyone. It's actually rather refreshing to see a developer/publisher open the doors (to an extent) to fan made games based off their popular MoBA. Most other publishers would shove law suits down Instaburst's throat at the mere idea that they would have the audacity to love the game so much they would want to create a fan project.

The situation gets even better than that. In light of Instaburst's game, Riot has made some changes to their legal page:

"We’ll start with our golden rule – you can use League of Legends IP as the basis for a fan project that you’re giving away for free or that’s only generating ad revenue (we’ll refer to this type of free fan project as a “Project”), as long as you comply with the guidelines outlined below for using our IP (the “Guidelines”). As a matter of fact, as long as you comply with our Guidelines, we think it’s great if you create awesome, free and original content for League of Legends fans."

Since the project has been given the "okay" by Riot, Instaburst is continuing their recruitment for more people to help with the project. If you want to contribute, check out their website and sign up.

I think I'll wait to see more gameplay before deciding to get this or not.

That's really cool of them. Still a boring game, but cool company.

Making a fighting game from a MOBA game full of crazy AOE-burst-happy heroes and not much else. The diversity in this game will...lack a little bit of something.

    "Grappler? What's that?"
