I must confess that I have not been remarkably excited for Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. It's difficult to pinpoint why, exactly, I haven't been too interested. Perhaps some of Assassin's Creed III's unremarkable aspects made me a tad jaded to the series, or perhaps it's simply driving me crazy that numbered Assassin's Creed games aren't supposed to have subtitles. Either way, it hadn't clicked for me the way it has for Nick- until I watched this gameplay video, that is.
I can quite confidently state that there is so much in this video that I wasn't prepared for. It all stems from very familiar ground, yes, but what is being done on that ground and how it's being executed appears interesting, fun, and worth real notice. From the living, breathing shantytowns to the stunningly beautiful blue seas to the swashbuckling soundtrack and pirate songs, this is truly a piratey adventure to live out. It reminds me of part of what made Assassin's Creed II great, in a way. Both games appear to be the story of gifted young men dragged into the Order and thrust into a conflict that is surrounding the world and character instead of defining them. And they both look like a heck of a lot of fun.
Let this also be seen as a triumph of what we should truly hope for in the next generation. It's clear that this is the Playstation 4 build, and what I see already gives me hope. The game is gorgeous, yes, but what makes me happy is that the game is just chock full of stuff to do and every last bit of it unfolds beautifully and seamlessly. "Seamlessness" is the big word here, a feature they emphasize and rightly should.
Thanks to this video, I'm kicking myself for not putting this one on my "top 5 most anticipated" list. I suspect Ubisoft won't be offended, however- it looks like they'll have my money, after all.
Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag releases on October 29th for the Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii U, and more "advanced" versions of the game will release for the Xbox One and Playstation 4 at launch. A PC version is expected sometime in November.

I'm torn really. I would love any new game about pirates but I am not particularly interested in the Assassins Creed series. The fact that all these characters are tie to the Arabic sect that were massacred by the Mongols after erroneously assuming they could manipulate them like the previous rulers just doesn't do it for me. I feel like I would be all over this game had it been a new ip but just can't get hyped over it.

This looks like it'll be fun to see on the feed. I liked watching the ACIII ship battles.

If this was not an Assassin's Creed game I would be way more excited. Simply because I am not invested in the series and I know it will not just be a cool game about being a pirate but also a game about a convoluted shitty story and a lineage of magic assassin's. Perhaps somebody will convince me to pick up AC2, Brotherhood, Revelations and AC3 some day.
