It is real.
After five years of rumors and hope, Mirror's Edge 2 has finally been announced. The sequel to Mirror's Edge, a beautiful, innovative first-person free-running game which fell just short of true greatness and badly needed a sequel, is going to happen. The above teaser was shown at EA's E3 2013 press conference to close out the show and it's fair to say that the audience was quite happy.
In a statement on the Mirror's Edge web site, Senior Producer Sara Jansson wrote about the "honor" of working on the sequel to Mirror's Edge and pledged that "we will stay true to Mirror’s Edge." Also very positive is her understanding of Faith, the main character, and her relevance as one of gaming's too-few female role models, describing her as "one of gaming’s most inspiring and true heroines." Sounds like she gets it.
The teaser ends with an unfortunate "When it's ready" release date, but it's just great to know that it's really happening. Whenever Mirror's Edge 2 comes out, it will be releasing for the Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
UPDATE: Shortly after the announcement, EA sent out a press release declaring that the game "reboots the franchise for the next generation with advanced visuals and an all-new origin story for Faith." As in the trailer Faith is seen getting the tattoos that she already has at the beginning of Mirror's Edge this would make sense for a prequel, but "reboot" and "all-new origin story" would indicate something more dramatic. Hopefully this is just bad wording, as totally rewriting the Mirror's Edge history would be strange considering the franchise is only one game large.

If Nick isn't shedding tears of joy on today's podcast, this whole affair is a disappointment.

*sniff* so it's true dreams really do come true, on another note I don't really mind if they do a reboot as long as the gameplay is as unique as the original.
