After a week of teaser images and speculation, the new IP project from Bethesda Softworks is finally unveiled and it is not what many expected it to be (Wolfenstein). To our surprise (not really), the game is also NOT Prey 2. Tango Gameworks, the new studio established by Shinji Mikami, the creator of Resident Evil, has announed their first project, The Evil Within

Originally codenamed "Zwei", the project appears to be a dark and oppressive game that is sure to push the boundaries of horror tropes when it releases in 2014. The live-action trailer above gave me vibes of everything from Silent Hill to House on Haunted Hill to Thirteen Ghosts. I can't say that I have been a huge fan of Japanese Game development recently but Shinji Mikami is a name that still demands respect in my book. The man helped define a genre and the prospect of him returning to said genre is incredibly exciting.

A source has posted details about the game on an official NeoGaf thead as well. These details are yet to be confirmed but will likely be confirmed by the end of the day.

  • Uses ID Tech 5, they say they are taking the engine a step further than it has ever been used and are utilizing a state-of-the-art lighting engine and a much more powered-up version of the engine than any game to date has used.
  • Our main characters name is Sebastian, who is on the run from the cops. However, they end up in a place where he watches the cops get slaughtered one by one, and then gets knocked unconscious. When he awakens, he finds himself in a a sector of a facility, trapped in closed-corridors and defenseless against a giant (safe-headed?) monster that wanders these halls...
  • Game is said to be trying to strike a balance between horror and action, and to but in the sense that one should be desperately struggling to survive and facing scenarios of unimaginable horror. They say they want to redefine horror, and seem to be going for a more difficult and intense experience.
  • The game promises to have limited resources and be full of puzzles and traps. They want to fill the player with anguish, tension, and anxiety and send them off the deep end.
  • They make a focus that enemies can easily kill the player, you'll have to be cunning and evasive to survive in these harsh conditions.
  • This is a bit foggy, but it seems the player can experience random distortions that can happen in any area at any time, which changes anything from enemies, doors, walls, objects, or the like into terrifying nightmares that our character sees. These are random and change in real-time as well, it seems.
  • They finish off saying that they want the game to start strong and continue with a growing feel of insecurity to grow as the game goes on. They also mention the game will have an in-depth world, and you're being hunted by something mysterious and dark.

I loved the use of Johann Sebastion Bach's "Air" in the trailer...it gave you a false sense of comfort....then BOOM. It scared me have to death. Well fucking played. I can't wait to see more of this in the future. I don't think I'll be playing this, but I will look forward to watching you gents play it :)

I'll be honest, this looks really cool. The vibe of it makes me think of some hellraiser-ish theme. And the dude that comes down that elevator with the spiky hammer and the (what looks like a) welding helmet looks cool as shit.

Since its not gameplay I think we can just assume this is a concept of how the game will feel like, but I want to see some gameplay of this. I mean what is it, a third person or first person game? Also I like the fact that its going to be difficult in the sense that you can easily die from mobs, combined with puzzles and tension and traps.

Could this maybe become a nice blended-malt whiskey of Amnesia and Dark Souls? Looking forward to hear more about it!

iD Tech 5 engine with improved lighting? Yes, don't get it on PS3 or 360 unless you want half-assed visuals.

(Looks at Game Cover of barbed wire wrapped around brain) Talk about one hell of a headache; anyways I like what I saw from the trailer and from the tidbit details given out. For some odd reason, I’m just trying to focus as to how/if a save function is going to be implemented. (Due to the fact the details state there are limited resources.)

Shinji has had his "hand" in some pretty good games. Here is to hoping it ends up being another great title.

That cover art image is pretty grotesque. The trailer is unnerving as hell too- if it's representative of the kind of atmosphere the final game will have then I'm definitely looking forward to this one.
