Square Enix Source Claims Versus Set For PS4

It has been long rumored that the nature of Final Fantasy Versus XIII has changed over the course of its Duke Nukem Forever-esque development time, including not unfounded claims that it is now Final Fantasy XV, or that it has been pushed to a Playstation 4 release. A report from Gameblog.fr may at the very least have confirmed the latter.

Apparently with Sony's help -and an unspecified amount of money- Versus is now exclusive to both PS3 and PS4, and work began on the PS4 version two years ago. This would tie into a handful of things we already know: the decision in 2011 to release the game on multiple platforms could easily have been a major contributor to the game's extended development time and near-silence of the development team, Square promised at the PS4 debut conference a Final Fantasy game at E3 for the PS4, and Tetsuya Nomura did just claim that a date for a new Versus announcement is set and coming soon.

Whether or not this means Versus is now Final Fantasy XV remains to be seen, but if this is announced at E3, it is a major feather in Sony's cap for a next-gen console that has already garnered some degree of support among gamers. Dreaming just a little bit more: if Versus is announced as a launch title for the PS4, it will be very, very difficult for Microsoft to match such an announcement with the Nextbox/Xbox 720/Kinect Entertainment System.

We could be looking at a very interesting E3 this year. Or Square could announce a re-release of Final Fantasy IV for the 3DS. That sounds like something they would do.
