In the Nintendo Direct video released today, the first game shown was Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, which I predict will go down in history as "that one Mario game that was weirdly like Inception."
In the game, the heroes make their way to Pi'illo Island, where a tour of the beautiful locale is going on. Peach is kidnapped again, and dragged into a "dream world." Mario and Luigi set about saving her by entering the dream world themselves, accessed by Mario diving in whenever Luigi falls asleep on a magic pillow.
I don't know, man, it's Nintendo.
There appears to be quite the variety of gameplay types on display, with the game featuring adventures both in the dream world and the real word. In the real world, Mario & Luigi will work cooperatively to inflict damage and solve puzzles together during battles, with what appear to be a wide variety of techniques. Satoru Iwata promises a number of different visuals and features using the Nintendo 3DS' "unique capabilites."
These capabilities interestingly come into play in the dream world, where the player adventures on a 2D plane as Mario while Luigi, sleeping, can be seen on the bottom touch screen.
In what is actually a pretty cool use of the touch feature, players will be able to change the nature of the gameplay in the dream world by messing around with the sleeping Luigi on the touch screen.
The coolest thing announced, obviously, is that there are sequences in which Mario rolls up a ton of Luigis Katamari Damacy-style and uses them to run over other Luigis and enemies, with the ball of Luigis growing as he collects more.
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team will be released August 11th in retail and on the Nintendo eShop.
