Being honest, the most notable aspect of Delver’s Drop I witnessed in my brief play-session with it at PAX East this year is art direction. Its characters and the world surrounding are bright, colorful, and charming. I took to it the minute my eyes rested on Delver’s visuals. Sure, there’s much more to the game than its visuals – and I’ll get to that in a minute – but these days simply being another randomized 2D action-Roguelike RPG isn’t enough for me.
This PAX demo was a simple, endless-dungeon grind and a difficult one at that; which I appreciate. Most of DD’s difficulty stemmed from control-familiarity, with every action in-game responding freely and far more fluidly than expected. This is not to say that the enemy design didn’t play a part in Delver’s difficulty, because it certainly did, yet my initial struggles grew from my inability to land attacks and not fall into deadly chasms.
Delver’s Drop is promising to pack-in 6 playable classes, yet I only had hands-on time with its Rogue. Unfortunately I can’t comment on how different each class feels from another. The Rogue is a cute and colorful character to look at but simply swung a sword and brandished a shield, leaving much to be desired in his combat abilities. Hopefully the Sorcerer, Gladiator, and remaining unannounced classes bring a little more depth to Delver’s combat mechanics.
The enemy types I came across in the demo reacted differently and rarely attacked in readable patterns, which made me happy. As for the levels themselves, I found their lighting atmospheric yet layouts a bit drab. Danger was everywhere in these randomly generated floors in forms of spikes and pits. I was promised puzzle-dungeons yet saw nothing more in-demo than crates and switches; which leaves me a bit concerned about the design of promised puzzles in Delver’s finished form.
Ultimately I’m excited to see Delver’s Drop in its finished form. It has a ton of promise and an art-style I can’t resist. Sure, I wasn’t blown away by what I saw on the show-floor but the game is still early in its development; expected to hit PC/Mac/Linux in October 2013 with iOS/Android/OUYA releases in 2014. For now, I’ll give Pixelscopic the benefit-of-a-doubt on their gorgeous action RPG. It played like a solid, well-build game should.

This game really seems cool. However there is something i'm starting to notice with top down zelda-ish rpgs. They really seem to move a bit slow. When I mean that I mean the characters seem to only walk through the game. I like how illusion of Gaia had a bit more fast movement like being able to run fast and jump on ramps, sliding through cracks, and my favorite, jumping down from a high altitude platform.
