The future of the space sim is almost non-existent on the major development scene and that's a damn shame.  On the indie scene however we're seeing the beginnings of a new renaissance for the genre with titles like Starlight Inception and Strike Suit Zero not only meeting their Kickstarter campaign goals but also exceeding them.  And just now, at 1pm CST, the biggest major project for the genre has been funded: Star Citizen, the juggernaut title from Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts.  The original goal of $2 million, spread across both Roberts Space Industries' site as well as Kickstarter, was met on October 26th, ensuring the game would get made.  As of now though that goal was obliterated with a whopping $6,222,353 total.

While it doesn't lay claim to the most well-funded Kickstarter game project (I believe that title still belongs to Double Fine), Star Citizen is now the most funded crowd-sourcing video game to date.  My congrats go out to the team at Austin's own Cloud Imperium Games.  I myself am a backer of the project, having donated $125.  If you donated be sure to sound off in the comments.  I'm already thinking of ways we can take advantage of this, ie. a 4PN carrier base that community and staff members could use.  I'm excited for the future of this project and you damn well should be too.
