Casey Hudson, the director of Mass Effect 3, is reaching out to fans for suggestions as to how the next entry in the Mass Effect series should take shape. Earlier this month, Hudson Tweeted that Bioware were "in early stages of designing a completely new Mass Effect game" and asked his followers "What would you want to see in it?"

Now, Hudson has once again turned to his Twitter followers for advice on the new game. On his Twitter account, he wrote:

Parsing through your thoughts on the next #ME game. Would you be more interested in a game that takes place before the trilogy, or after?

Alright then Hudson, since you asked, a prequel expanding on the Mass Effect universe sounds enticing, providing it isn't the start of another trilogy, Star Wars style. Something more relaxed, less apocalyptic and less action-focussed would be nice. I'm thinking along the lines of the loyalty missions in Mass Effect 2. A return to that level of quality writing and characterisation could carry an entire game without the shadow of doomsday hanging over you throughout it. Oh, and no multiplayer this time. It wasn't needed, we got it anyway, I gave it a try, and I was underwhelmed. So no thanks.

That's just my opinion though, and if Bioware are going to reach out to the fans to help shape Mass Effect 4, they had better be prepared for a lot of contradictory, conflicting feedback. You can't please everyone. So, what do you want to see in the next Mass Effect game? Do say in the comments.

Definitely a prequel. My choice would be a game focused on the First Contact War, but really anything with a new cast of characters would be fantastic.

I'd prefer a prefer a prequel, the Mass Effect universe has such a rich history, with all the stuff with the Protheans, Rachni Wars, First Contact War, you have more than enough to work with. Not to mention, anything that took place after the Reapers seems like it'd be a little underwhelming.

I'd rather they did a sequel :) By that I imagine that part of the ending when an old man is talking about Shepard who lived hundreds or thousands of years ago and is only a legend, history. I think it would make a great setting for a sequel .

I personally think there were too many variables by the end of Mass Effect 3 to do a sequel that relied on previous choices in the series (which I'm assuming they'd do to connect the universe together). I think that with more games that are made that build off previous entries in the series, the transition and data that is carried over becomes a bit more sloppy due to the difficulty of actually implementing choice in future installments.

Getting to the point, I think I'd rather have a prequel. It provides a clean slate that Bioware could work with, but I would prefer a story that is small-scale as opposed to the huge stakes by Mass Effect 3.

I want it to be an RPG again. I don't care if the "Call of Duty audience" doesn't like the fucking game; there are already a plethora of third person shooters out there for them. I want inventory and more customization when it comes to building my character. I want to be able to take a vehicle down onto a random planet and drive around. I want an interesting story with twist and turns. I DON'T want any sort of multiplayer whatsoever. I could not give less of a shit whether it's a prequel or a sequel.

Basically I want an evolution of Mass Effect 1, not another downgrade. With a different story and characters obviously.

I'd love to see a clean-slate prequel revolving around the Rachni Wars. I think exploring the galaxy's vast history and alien races is more interesting and advantageous for a prequel than the First Contact War. Personally, I'm more curious about the histories of non-human races and how they managed to develop. That being said, realistically, I don't see BioWare creating a game with a non-human protagonist. The First Contact War is a more viable option for a prequel.

I would love to see more elaborated on the First contact war and the early years of human presence in the intergalactic community. See how the other races react to us and our culture. In the planet description for earth in Mass Effect 2 it said that it was "a source of wonder and cultural inspiration even before humanity made first contact". This implies that the aliens of the galaxy were fairly impressed with us, or at least our homeworld.

I would love to see these early interactions between our species and the galaxy. To be honest we really haven't seen much of the other races homeworlds. Perhaps a game where you play as a spy/diplomat who is touring through the other devoloped worlds of the universe.

You guys should be sure to tweet these comments to Casey Hudson. More feedback about a prequel will increase the likeliness it'll happen.

I want a prequel that has nothing to do with Reapers or Shepard's crew. The universe is too big to have just one bad guy and single hero.

I think they need to get as far away from Mass Effect 3 as possible and there are plenty of events in the Mass Effect universe to base a prequel on like the first contact war, rachni wars or maybe ever Andersons time working with Saren as a Specter candidate.

I may be the only one to say this, but I want Bioware to do whatever the hell it wants. That encompasses all the good things and bad things. I want them to be free to use their minds and come up with whatever they want, so long as it is theirs, and theirs alone. It's their game series, you know? I find it pathetic, but most of all, very saddening that they have to ask their community for permission to do anything. They should realize once again that they can do whatever they want to do with the series, because only they know what would be another interesting point to start from. It just... pisses me off to see a mighty and once very respected company like Bioware so used and told to do stuff beyond their will that they ask their fans for ideas, so that they won't be angry and throw a bitch fit again.

But, if they want another answer to this... I would like to see the First Contact War in more detail. There's too much story about how humans met the alien species, and I would like to see more on that. A prequel featuring the Protheans and their losing war against the Reapers would be nice, too.

Man, Bioware is really fucked up over Mass Effect now, aren't they. Can't make any decisions for themselves anymore...

I don't think Bioware should focus on another Mass Effect game at all. I think hey should add an entirely new game to their resume. Not saying Mass Effect is completely dulled out or anything of that caliber. Sure folks still cling to Mass Effect, but they first dug hooks into their experience with the characters they ended up meeting throughout the story and history they were provided about the main threat. A First Contact war would be another Mass Effect 3 without Reapers or total destruction involved. A High Octane, fast-paced, third person shooter with over the top set pieces. A new franchise would be what Bioware needs. They have the potential to bring one to life. Along with all the ruckus about EA rushing products left and right, fans of Mass Effect won't see their series tainted even more with the EA gung-ho persona, and will be less likely to judge the next "non-Mass Effect" game that comes from Bioware.....and EA respectively. (not) Step up Bioware. Give us a new IP and make sure it's good enough to give EA a boner so that they sell the shit out of it. It's what you need. It's what your fans (and future fans) need.
