Dead Island Developer Reveals

A small team within Techland, the developers of Dead Island, have revealed a new hack and slash game codenamed Project Hell on their blog. The game started as a fantasy themed weapon mod for Dead Island, and has evolved into an independent project.

According to the blog post:

Our main goal is to make a game we can all enjoy playing so don’t expect unicorns and fairies – we prefer breaking through hordes of undead minions only to slaughter their devilish and loathsome masters in a bloody boss-fight. To achieve that we’ll use our experience already gained in game development and enhanced technology from Dead Island. We believe that we can make something really unique and thrilling and share it with you.

"Combining the fighting mechanics of Dead Island and adding magic (literally) we created a powerful mixture – a dark fantasy FPP hack’n'slash," a later post explains. "We want to travel back to the times when enemies were really hideous and repulsive, the fights were brutal and bloody and the gameplay was challenging and rich with secrets waiting to be uncovered"

So, it's Dead Island's combat system with added magic in a dark fantasy setting? I'm sure that's got some people out there excited, but it doesn't sound like the sort of recipe that's going to be rocking my socks. Besides, what's wrong with unicorns and fairies?

While the game might turn out be fun, it's worth pointing out that most of the team also worked on Call of Juarez: The Cartel, arguably one of the worst games of last year, and that, whether you enjoyed it or not, Dead Island was also lacklustre in a number of areas. Still, if you set the bar low enough, your audience is more likely to be pleasantly surprised! Right?

From Dead Island I feel like the dev knows how to create some really solid, fun, and/or unique gameplay mechanics (why in the hell don't other first-person games have the simple side/back-hop of dead island?! The throwing mechanic I feel is also the perfect mixture of free-aiming and lock-on) but really struggle to create a solid game "package." Dead island's tone was REALLY weird, with a setting and a story that was played straight but contained really off-the-wall, silly elements like the weapons. There was no real point in leveling up since every enemy was scaled to your level, to the point where a single enemy could be multiple levels depending on who was striking it. finding or making new weapons was simply treading water.

That enemy design (pictured) already looks exceedingly stupid so I don't think they'll win back any points for tone in their next game, but as long as it's fun, has some emergent gameplay situations (that sometimes happened in dead island) and is coop, I might get it.

All I could think while reading this was "Arx Fatalis" and "Dark Messiah of Might and Magic".

I hope it lives up to those names, but I'm skeptical now.
