This Gamer Life: Games. Tanning. Lollipops. (GTL?)

Though we lead gamer lives, not everything about it is video games.  For example, I spent my time wording this editorial while on a boat trip back from Martha's Vineyard; after a day of skin-crisping on a beach, swimming in the Atlantic, and zipping around the island - that birthed Jaws - on a moped.  Much more fun than what I would have been doing, had I spent the day indoors; wrapping up Super Paper Mario, shooting the innocent in Spec-Ops: The Line, and re-running Lollipop Chainsaw

 

TOO. LONG.

Super Paper Mario gets better and better as it nears conclusion, but the longer it takes to "bust its nut"...the lesser the charm.  15 hours of puzzle-platforming is a hefty clump to swallow, and only because its design forces me to play the game continuously throughout the week in order to keep away from FAQs.  Much like Chrono Trigger, once you take this ride you're better off slogging through it without long breaks, or face wasting hours of time trying to remember who, what, and why. Still...one of the best Mario joints to date.

SUUDDDDAAAA!

Lollipop Chainsaw should have been shorter!  It's padded with layers of repetition that was simply unnecessary for what the game was trying to convey.  Why it wasn't a 4 hour downloadable "rhomp" at half the price-tag...is beyond me. I am a fan of Grasshopper's games and want to see them continue to produce.  Still, with all of Chainsaw Zombie Tits' flaws - much like many a Suda joint - I cant help but love its grind house-punk sensibilities.  Someone, please, fist-bump James Gunn for penning its interesting story for us, while we're at it.

 

On this nauseating boat ride home I continued a game of Civilization: Revolution on my iPad, but opted to begin writing after a dozen turns or so.  Days off, from the digital-distractions we enjoy so much, help me continue to enjoy the medium.  To be honest, this summer doesn't look to be as exciting as we'd hoped anyway, so why not enjoy the weather while it lasts?
