Bethesda Softworks (The Elder Scrolls series) and Mojang (Minecraft) have settled their dispute over the trademark for Mojang’s game entitled Scrolls.

In March of 2011, Mojang announced that their second game will be Scrolls, a digital, deck-building card game. That August, Bethesda took legal action in a letter to Mojang that claimed filing for a trademark on the name “Scrolls” was in violation of their trademark on “The Elder Scrolls”.

Mojang’s blog shared last Friday news of the settlement, with Carl Manneh, Managing Director of Mojang, answering two implicit questions, saying, “Scrolls is still going to be called Scrolls,” and “we aren’t going to keep the trade mark.” As the trademark now resides with Bethesda, Mojang will not be able to develop future games using this title.

That is really dumb. Shouldn't a trademark protecting the name "The Elder Scrolls" protect only..."The Elder Scrolls"?
