Forgive the late start to the show this week but a little pre-show analysis of Final Fantasy XII had to make the cut. Mike Pittman joins the crew in Davids absence to discuss the Starhawk beta and his excitement for Journey. Nick reveals all about Resident Evil Revelations and Brad continues to shower Twisted Metal with sweet nectar. On a rather odd note, the guys can't put their finger on it but something is missing from the recently released, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. Could it be it's soul? All that plus Far Cry 3, Sleeping Dogs, and Assassin's Creed 3 in this weeks episode! Don't miss it!

In regards to the Kingdoms of Amalur, could it be that they explain too much in dialogue and leave too little to player interpretation? It lacks a certain mystery in my opinion.
Dark Souls, and it's predecessor, relied heavily on item descriptions and minor in-game dialogue to describe tidbits of the game world's history. Other modern western RPGs like unraveling the story through npc chatter, be it rumors or news of current events unfolding throughout the world. I think it's easier to get attached when you feel like you're finding things out for yourself, rather than being monologued at for a half an hour.

I finished Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning's main questline and all of the faction quests and it's really weird but it does feel hollow to me. I just can't put my finger on it as to why though... I've played the game for 42 hours now. I feel like they put so much work into the world and the lore and all of the NPC's with a name have something different to say when you talk to them but for some reason, it just feels soulless to me; as if the world just isn't very interesting or compelling.
There were actually a few sidequests which were interesting and unique that I still remember but as I neared the second half of the game, I just wanted to barrel through the main quest, ignoring most of the sidequests that popped up on my minimap. The world is just so huge and littered with interesting loot and terrain but I feel like my character moves so slowly in comparison that I don't even feel like running all the way off the track to talk to them.
Really, I love the randomized loot and the spells and combat were fun. The art style doesn't put me off too much and the graphics are pretty nice. But there's just something that I feel like this game is lacking...
Sorry for the wall of text but ever since I reached around hour 30 of this game, this soulless aspect has really been bugging me and I've been struggling to figure out what it was. After listening to the podcast, I'm glad I wasn't the only one feeling this way and had to share my experience. I don't regret my purchase though!
