It's been over four years since Episode Two was released with its shocking ending and the dramatic setup for the next adventure for Dr. Freeman and Alyx Vance. Like many fans of the wonderful Half-Life series, I too have been waiting (somewhat) patiently for the next entry in the series which is almost universally assumed to be a full on iteration rather than an episodic expansion like what was previously announced. Beyond the fact that the series will return though there's been little at all in the way of news from Valve.
Naturally, this has upset some people a bit over the years.
In an effort to get a dialog about the progress of development for Half-Life 3, a group of dedicated fans have come together to form a Steam group called "A Call for Communication." This group, approaching 31,000 members as of the time of posting, wants Valve to be be vocal about their bread-and-butter series that has been absent for so long.
"Waiting patiently for over four years is a daunting task, especially when E3 comes and goes without any beat of a Half-Life pulse, time and time again. Valve had stated that information was scheduled to be released towards the end of 2008, and we believe that if they have chosen, for whatever reason, to withhold this information, fans should at least be acknowledged in some way, regardless of developmental plans for the next Half-Life project.
This message is in no way, shape or form attempting to rush the development of the Half-Life series; in fact, most members agree that Valve should take the time needed to deliver a complete and polished product."
To that end, the group will be hosting a sort of "play in," asking Steam members to play Half-Life 2 this Saturday for thirty minutes starting at 11:00am PDT (1:00pm CST). Called the Red Letter Day, the group hopes to raise awareness for the absence of communication about the project and make Half-Life 2 one of the top ten most played games that day.
I myself plan on participating and I hope that we can do the same on the stream. For those without a copy of the game on the PC or perhaps don't have a decent gaming PC I would encourage you to purchase a copy of The Orange Box for the PS3 or 360 and play it along with us. It's a great activity to participate in and I look forward to diving back into the marvel that was City 17.

This is a great idea, I'll definitely participate. I'm not sure if I'll be up at 11 AM, but I can add my steam account to the 31,000 who will play that day...probably around 3PM.

I guess it's a good reason for me to go back and check out the episodes which I never played.

I really wish people would stop talking about this; everyone acts so entitled to the Half-Life series. I appreciate this group doing this in a more peaceful manner than others have done before, but regardless, everybody just needs to shut the fuck up about Half-Life 3.
Valve doesn't have to tell us anything about what they're doing. The game will come out when it's ready, and the only thing people are accomplishing with these sort of stunts is pissing off the developer.
I'm just as excited for HL3 as the next guy, but the whole "we deserve it" shit has to stop. Just let Valve do their jobs.

what kind of person would be that impatient? Do they just sit there staring at their pc screen doing nothing all those 4 years? Its called other things to do, play some games, watch a movie, anything. People seriously can't wait for a game to come out? I just don't understand it, I mean i could see ppl getting edgy because all this news came out of nowhere and a awesome trailer came out showing how great the game is. We got nothing so far, so it shouldn't be a huge issue.

Totally going to participate in this.

I'm actually replaying HL2 right now. Guess I have to participate.

Time to play HL2 for the 1000th time, my last playthrough being last Friday, lol.

Good idea, much better than complaining about it in emails. Personally I'm surprised it took people this long to come up with something like this. Also why not go further and make the first Saturday of every month "Play Half-Life Day"? The metrics on Steam mean a lot and if players can get HL to register there more then it can only help.

Man, I just beat it again. Can I play Episode One instead? xD

Definitely participating in this. HL2 is so cool! I just hope this gets Valve's attention.

I won't be participating in this, but I do completely agree with its intent. Unless the product is close to coming out, and there's some marketing reason to not say something right away, these companies need to talk more to their fans. They're too tight lipped about stuff. I'm not saying they need to lay all their cards down on the table and show us what they have planned at all hours of the day, but is it too much to ask for them to just say "oh, yeah we're still working on it. i'd say we're about X% finished"? Or they could do like movie studios where they give you a simple "we're in pre/post production". Or, if you're not doing anything currently then just say so "we're not working on it right now". Whatever, it's all marketing.
