Despite my long and rocky history with handheld gaming, I have finally started to warm up to the concept. My previous reservations stemmed from my desire to have a console game experience in the palm of my hand which didn't exactly line up with the reality of the portable gaming scene. With the 3DS already making significant strides towards mirroring the console experience, Sony is preparing to jump in with both feet with their newest handheld effort, the Playstation Vita.

Coming off of E3 last year and having a chance to examine the new hardware in action, my feelings were rather positive. Not only does the handheld sport some impressive tech, the price point at launch is affordable considering all of the bells and whistles that come stock. For those who may still be wondering what makes this hardware special, it comes equipped with:

    • A 5" OLED multi-touch screen (one of the best screen technologies on the market)
    • Dual-analog sticks (finally!)
    • Rear multi-touch pad
    • Front and rear cameras
    • Six-axis motion functionality
    • Optional 3G capabilities

Bundle all of that with a sleek first-generation design, a price point of $249.99 (or $299.99 if you want 3G) and one of the best software launch line-ups of this generation and Sony just might be onto something this time.

For me, the Vita is a no brainer. I am normally an early adopter of new hardware anyways but given the low price point and the stellar line-up featuring Uncharted, Wipeout, and Lumines, I have long since pre-ordered my unit. The question on my mind however is how the hardware will fare at launch in the west. In Japan, launching with a Monster Hunter game led to a lacking launch with 3DS outselling the Vita by nearly 50,000 units in its opening days.

With many people considering the original PSP to be secondary to Nintendo's hardware last generation and the embarrassing launch of the PSP Go a few years ago, lack of faith in Sony is not uncommon or unsubstantiated. The question now becomes how will the hardware fare in North America and Europe? While Monster Hunter doesn't hold as much sway in these regions, the tarnished brand (when it comes to handhelds) might be enough to ensure that the hardware under-performs.

What I can say for sure is that the Vita has our attention here at 4Player. It impressed us at E3 and will surely become a platform that we cover on a regular basis on the site and through our weekly podcasts. As for the community, I'm not so sure. Will you be buying a Vita during it's launch window (first 2 months)? Tell us why or why not and let us know what games and features you are the most excited about!

YES! Day 1, with Uncharted Golden Abyss! I'm excited for Gravity Rush, the Bioshock game they are supposedly making..might give Silent Hill Book of Memories a go (being a massive Silent Hill fan, I can't keep away..even though I know it won't be like a usual silent hill experience..)
So glad to hear 4player will be covering PSVita news & games.

Ugh nick did u even play a lot of games on ur 3ds? Besides ur better off catching up on some console games like demon souls and dark souls....that way u can wait it out for the vita price to drop and more games to come out before umake ur decision. I never buy new hardware day one....i tend to wait it out and see how it does software wise and if the makers are gonna support it or not, but whats really driving me away are the memory stick prices

I will not be buying a Vita at launch or a good 8 months after. When it comes to handhelds , I'm on team Nintendo. Don't get me wrong i have a PS3 and in no way am i a Sony fan boy. Its just, i trust Nintendo more than Sony when it comes to handhelds. Maybe the Vita will be amazing and have the software to back up its hardware.

For me to buy a Vita , Sony needs to show me a plethora of both original ips ( Gravity Rush is looking good) and sony first party ips (sly cooper, Ratchet, etc.) also some excellent and original second and third party games too.

I know that when it originally had the holiday release window my girlfriend had one on order from Amazon (I wasn't supposed to know but when she checks on an items delivery status it is all right there). I don't know if she still has that open or cancelled it though. Either way I definitely want one. I don't know why but there is nothing about the 3DS that makes me want one at all. I love my DS and have played tons with it but the 3DS feels unnecessary to me. The Vita is a significant boost and it seems like they have solved a lot. Only worry now is that the follow the blueprint set by the original DS and make unique content to utilize the handhelds features and not just make console ports like they did with the PSP

Vita might be my first platform picked up at launch. Unfortunately, that puts me $250+games/acessories behind on my new PC fund.

Sorry, not a must-have at launch for me. Don't get me wrong; I believe the Vita is a sexy machine at a decent price-point. I just don't play handhelds to justify getting one.

Vita looks like it has potential to be a pretty good system, but the launch lineup isn't enough for me to get a Vita at launch. I'm not that excited for Uncharted on a hand held, so I can wait on that. I'm somewhat excited for Lumines, but not excited enough to buy a portable on launch for. I'd rather just wait until the Vita library fills up with more games before I'd cave and buy one.

I really want it at launch, but I want to wait a bit.. I love my 2 PSPs and they are still useful to me. Also, I spent my money recently on a Pink 3DS for reasons unknown.

Now, if a new God of War PSvita bundle came out, you bet your ass I'm get it. It's like a tradition for me now.

Always been a huge fan of handhelds, hell my PSP gets more use then my PS3 and that's saying something. The Vita is a day one buy for me and I planned on that being the case since I heard about the thing.

In my honest opinion the PSP had a superior line up of games compared to the DS and hopefully that trend continues for this generation of handhelds and to be honest Sony already has the leg up there. Right now Shinobido and Gravity Daze are my first planned pick ups, I also don't feel like Sony will fuck over early adopters like Nintendo did, or at least not in such an obvious way.

Nope, but I haven't had a handheld since Gameboy Advance (and I barely played that). That said, the Vita has looked the most attractive to me of all the handhelds I've seen in many years.

I'll wait a couple weeks, snag one with a 32gb memory stick, a couple games, maybe some accessories, all for under $200, cause some dumbass jumped the gun and bit off more than he could chew. I saw similar 3DS bundles in local ads going for as much.

I want a vita but i am not paying the current price for one. A quick look on amazon us and they are $250 USD. Convert that to GBP and its approx £160. But here in the UK the vita is selling at £230. wtf... That £70/$100 extra we have to pay in the UK could be spent on buying 2 maybe 3+ games. I hate how we always get ripped off

Luckily the Vita launches on my birthday, so definitely yes for me. :)

Honestly one of the best launch + launch window lineups I have ever seen.

I'm not an early adopter of hardware, of any type, so going to lay off the Vita for a while. I do however hope that Sony realizes handheld games aren't meant to be pocket versions of console games. I'd want to see more games like Gravity Rush and less Uncharted.

I won't be, but that is because I have no interest in handhelds right now.

Not excited at all. I'd much rather play these games on my television and not on a $250 handheld. Tell me when they port Gravity Rush to the PS3.

the 300 dollar with 3g too, despite atnt, this might replace my iphone as my mobile gaming device. Plus i cant imagine many JRPGs being developed for the big consoles now that the vita is out, and that's a genre of games i desperately want to get back into.

I definitely want one. I wouldn't call myself a console/PC ONLY gamer (although I currently don't have a handheld that I play). I gave up on my PSP because it broke on me. In that time I started gaming on my PC and PS3 a lot more. When I went back and looked at the PSP I wanted more out of it. Luckily the Vita seems like it'll up the quality a hell of a lot.

So far the things on that Vita that have me excited the most are games that I can't experience on the consoles. Sound Shapes for me is a system seller. I love music, and platforming is always fun. To mix both of them to the point where if I make a good track I'm also making a great level just sounds amazing to me.

The catch for me is I probably won't be able to afford one on launch which is a huge bummer. I have some PC upgrading to do first. Once I have that all set and done I'm going to buy one ASAP. Hopefully by that point there'll be multiple system sellers I'm looking forward to playing!

I'll be getting it. Surprisingly there are only two games I want. Gravity Rush and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. I want a Vita right now for the downloadable PSP games. My PSP is modded so I can't download any games off the PSN. UMvC 3 for practice purposes and Gravity Rush just looks dope.

No, I am totally happy with my 3DS. February, March and April are making up for the lack of good 3DS launch games. Feb - MGS 3D, Tales of the Abyss, Tekken 3D, RE: Revelations. March - Kid Icarus: Uprising, April - Fatal Frame Spinoff

Honestly, I haven't ever picked up a console at launch. Games, yes, but I'm not really in the budget for a new full-price console, even handheld. Even the 3DS after its price drop, but I'm mainly waiting for more games and maybe a better model. In purple. Still, the Vita has some interesting titles lined up for its launch window as well as just announced. I've got plenty of DS games, so I can wait.

Am getting the WiFi only version £230 in UK ($340 roughly). I really don't see why I would need the 3G version? It won't replace mobile phones. I hope there is a £300 bundle with uncharted and a memory stick.
