Yakuza: Dead Souls

Many have called it the GTA of the East, the great alternative to Rockstar's exception free-roaming series that has just the right amount of Japanese drama, comedy, action and authenticity one could want.  Yakuza 4 was the first in the series that saw a true uncut experience come across the Pacific after the much maligned remove of various cultural aspects and locations that plauged the reputation of Yakuza 3.  The series has seen several spinoff titles as well with one being set in Edo era Japan while another was a fighting game similar to the Def Jam titles.  Yakuza: Of The End though was the most drastically different of the three spin-offs simply for its inclusion of a common video game enemy: the undead.

Now before you press the back button and move on with your day take note that this isn't your normal zombie game.  Watch the video.

Of The End was announced last year and for all intents and purposes it didn't have a chance at coming to our shores until TGS a couple weeks back when SEGA reps hinted that the zombie title may go beyond the Japanese shores.  Low and behold a trademark for Yakuza: Dead Souls was discovered today, a subtitle that both reflects the nature of the undead menace present in Of The End as well as being more resounding than its confusing Japanese original.  Though the game has yet to be officially announced for markets outside the land of the rising sun it probably isn't too far off and an early 2012 release date probably isn't out of the question.  Either way, you can expect Brad to do a spit-take as soon as he reads this.

I love the Yakuza series, but i'm not as excited for this title even though a character I know is coming back. I kinda wish there was a little more hand to hand because it just seems weird to just keep shooting w/ not much melee for when zombies get close. I do believe Y:OTE will have its other content like hostesses and what not from the previous games.

Played the demo. The controls are atrocious and the gun play is poor. Come on Sega, gives us Kenzan!

Yakuza 4 is my game of the year so far, so more is just fine by me.

Having said that, damn, Japan sure do have trouble making up to scratch shooters.

As long as there's tons of minigames that I don't quite understand and Majima, I'll be satisfied.

I might get this since it's a Yakuza game, but people should know what they're getting into if they played the other Yakuza games.

To repeat what I said in the forum thread, of all the games in this series (and Yakuza is one of my favourite video game series') this is by far the one I care for the least. That said, I'm still glad to see SEGA continuing to support this franchise outside of Japan and welcome any localisations. I just hope it sells alright.

I doubt this sells very well at all, not saying it won't be awesome, but they'll only get the subset who actually play Yakuza and then a subset in that group who are zombie fans and willing to give up the Yakuza combat system for a clunky shooter.
