DmC Video GameNinja Theory/Capcom continues to parade their new Devil May Cry reboot in front of the public eye hoping to garner some positive feedback. While they have achieved varying levels of success in recent months, my excitement and enthusiasm for the project has reached record heights. Now, almost a year since its original reveal, Capcom has once again returned to the Tokyo Game Show to give the public their first real taste of gameplay. Check these out:

Ninja Theory's ability to develop a complex and competent fighting engine is open for debate. After the mindless button masher, Heavenly Sword, and the platforming focused Enslaved, it is no wonder that die-hard fans of DMC might be upset. After watching these videos, my opinion of the project remains unchallenged, mostly because my excitement for the game is centered around more than just combat mechanics. With that said, I do have a few minor concerns that I hope Ninja Theory addresses before releasing the game.

With the general feel and flow of combat firmly in place, I feel that the combat can benefit greatly from enhanced grapples and defensive maneuvers. While jumping is certainly a valid means of defense, the original DMC had Dante performing backflips, rolls, and firing in different directions to survive. Whether these features will be included has yet to be seen but I think that they would go a long in earning the respect of those who have been negative towards the game since day one.

What do you think?

I'll be happy to play and enjoy this game at the expense of others not playing or enjoying it. DMC isn't just about the combat for me; so it's easy for me to be excited when I see a new world and atmosphere that looks pretty damn cool. But, I do understand where the negatives are coming from. So, personally, to me this game seems like it's on the fast track to being pretty awesome.

I like this direction, yet I have not seen any counter for damage/combo points, starting to wonder if that will even appear in the game and how exactly the levels/fights will end, will scoring even take place in this game?

I'm still not 100% sure how I feel since this was never my favorite genre, ultimately to me it still has that distinctive western feel to the combat and by that I mean I constantly see the same move being performed or something very similar which is, Hit into air, combo, grapple, combo, grapple, repeat till dead. Something I don't feel was very common in say a game like Bayonetta where I felt performing the same tricks would leave me very dead. On a side note, does anybody feel the sounds are kind of "lacking" for better terms? They didn't seem to have that "umph" especially in Devil Trigger mode when it sounded like he was hitting guys with a wiffle bat. None the less I will continue to watch this game.

    From those two videos, here are my most dominant thoughts, both positive and negative;

    - The combat looks a little slow and floaty, with significantly noticable pauses between a lot of attacks. It seems to jutter and not flow very well. I can appreciate some people don't want a DMC game for it's combat but without the combat to draw people to it originally, the series would have likely floundered after it's first entry.

    - I don't like how a lot of attacks, seemingly when an enemy is killed, cut to a dramatic-camera-angle as Dante performs his killing blow. This could really interupt the flow of comboing on multiple enemies or keeping your barings. Then again, if the combat really isn't as fast or as complex as it once was, then maybe this isn't an issue. That in itself is up for debate for now though.

    - I'll say it again, Dante's redesign doesn't look good at all. I'm one of the few people who recoiled at the original, crack-head design but had it grow on me. Sure, Dante was different, unsightly and ugly but that grew on me. Now he's just gone back to being a pretty boy and it seems kinda... arbitrary.

+ The environment and overall visual quality does look very nice. Especially when he was in that netherworld-looking area. Some very cool and surreal, twisted setpieces from the looks of things.

+ While Ninja Theory arguably can't make a good DMC game, I have never not enjoyed one of their titles. This gives me a fair bit of hope that I will still LIKE this game. I just feel it's a shame that this is now seemingly the definitive track of the DMC series, and not an offshoot or side-story.

The combat looks kind of repetitive to me which isn't good. Also I wonder how the camera controls because it seems like they had a hard time keeping it focused on the enemy they were attacking. Not to mention it's quite easy to tell they made his sword stretchy so they could keep Nero's Devil Bringer abilities. AND ANOTHER THING, the dramatic camera angles remind me of Enslaved and those honestly got boring to me when I played that. From a gameplay standpoint, I'm not particularly impressed.

The only thing I saw that I didn't like was the one pre-animated finisher. I would much rather have those occur within the combo string itself rather than than an external part. I like the world traversal using weapons, the platforming looks pretty good (just hope it isn't as prevalent as previous Ninja Theory titles) and I'm digging what I see of the environment.

Background and level design look cool. Gameplay looks....meh. Bayonetta really ruined every character action game for me.

Combat still looks bad. Also, I'm not liking the enemy or level design. It just doesn't look like a Devil May Cry game at all to me.

I'm still neutral for this game.

However, I love the way the levels look, it's very aesthetically pleasing to me.

I don't really know what is wrong with the combat, I guess it just looks a tad sluggish. I mean it all looked kinda samey the whole way through, just alot of slashing and grapples. He devil triggered and spent like 12 seconds killing one seemingly normal enemy. I also don't like how there seems to be so much focus on air combat, or at least that seems to be what they are touting. My best moments in previous dmc games was wading through a shitload of demons and leaving without a scratch on me, killing them one at a time in the air is boring to me. I feel like they need to give a demo to some really talented people, like some of these guys on youtube who play the highest difficulty never getting hit once and basically stay full style the entire time, then maybe we could see the combats limitations better. Also about the appearance, I didn't mind crack head Dante really, but they brought back Dantes face and hes still in crack head clothes and it looks really out of place, I hope they get it sorted.

It looks alright to me. I think it has turned out better than I thought in the end. However I'd rather play Dragon's Dogma than DmC. I'm passing on this game.

Here's my thoughts as someone that have only played a couple of chapters of DMC4 on the two videos.

Thought the combat looked really slow. Maybe I'm
    The city looked nice.

The combat looks very slow and somehow reminds me of enslaved. I just can't see them making a combat system where I can string combos and juggle my opponents fucking everywhere. I like the visuals...but this has left me unimpressed.

Nick was also super protective of another game a while back *cough* duke nukem*...see how that turned out :P

Looks very interesting. When I first heard and saw about the new DMC I was appalled. Why destroy something that works very well? But seeing the trailers and watching the gameplay, I'm willing to with-hold judgement until I can actually get my hands on it. For me, I enjoy games with a good storyline, occassionally playing FPS and racing from time to time. As far as I can tell, this looks like it would have one hell of a storyline to fill in all the empty spaces, so I'd like to see what they are. Ninja Theory's got a lot of explaining to do.
I loved the other 4 games, they're all amazing. I hope this one doesn't disappoint. On top of the previous games I listed, I'm a Creature Feature and beastly monster gal. If the creatures can draw me in, I'll give it a shot. These demons better be good, on top of the story.

The combat just looks like a chore instead of fun. I shouldn't be taking 15-20 seconds trying to beat one enemy, and if I do have to, at least make it fun. It just looks like a lather-rinse-repeat sorta thing of mash buttons, knock enemy in the air, grab him back, and do it all over again.

I just don't get a sense of fun or enjoyment out of looking at this.

Just wanted to mention, I think Dante only aimed his guns at two enemies at once from DMC2 onward. I've barely played the series, so I could be 100% absofuckingwrong, but I got somewhat far into DMC1 and I don't recall that feature. I do remember doing it in DMC2, though.

Anyway, I'm pretty okay with what I'm seeing. As I just mentioned, I've barely played the series, so I don't have the same attachment for Dante as others do. However, I do want to mention what appears to be Devil's Trigger. His clothes change colors and his hair turns white. Come on. Give him wings or flames or some shit.

I'm interested in seeing more. I've never purchased a Ninja Theory game, so let's see if they can convince me to change that.
