Tokyo Game Show 2011

Starting just a handful of hours from now the Tokyo Game Show will open its doors to a flood of reporters and members of the industry for the last large news event of the year and we are (not) live on the scene.  While we aren't able to put a man on the ground to get a sense of the awe and chaos typical of a trade show like TGS we can give you a once-over on the events that will be happening each day.  For now, check out these announcements that have been made in the past 18 hours.

    • To start off, SquareEnix's Japanese studios have done it again whether you like it or not: the publisher has announced that Final Fantasy X, the last title in the series to be released before SquareSoft and Enix merged, will be receiving an HD remake for the Playstation 3 and PS Vita.  The release date for the title is unknown at this time and no screenshots are currently available.
    • Yoshinori Kitase, producer of Final Fantasy Versus XIII has finally entered full production five years after it was initially announced.  Here's hoping we see it before the decade is out.
    • Over at Tecmo Koei, Team Ninja announced Dead or Alive 5 which you can see footage of here.
    • Team Ninja didn't stop there however as they announced new details about Ninja Gaiden 3's multiplayer component.  A first for the series, the multiplayer will allow up to eight players to go head-to-head against one another through competitive play or rack up points on online leaderboards in a co-op mode against AI enemies.  The game will feature two different difficulty control settings: Ninja and Hero.  Hero mode uses allows for auto-dodging and blocking to make the game easier for players (something Itagaki is probably gawking at) while Ninja mode is the series' traditional gameplay.  Here's a new trailer:

    • SEGA has announced that Sonic Generations will be released worldwide on November 1st.
    • Sony had quite a bit of news to discuss in their pre-TGS conference.  The PS Vita will be released in Japan on December 17th for the current Yen/USD conversion rate of $390 for the 3G version as well as $325 for the Wifi-only model.  The system will have 3-5 hours of battery life and
    • 26 titles will be available at launch for the PS Vita with 100 total being available within the launch window.  Launch titles will include Uncharted: Golden Abyss, BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II Plus, Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 and Monster Hunter amongst others.
    • Nintendo wasn't about to let Sony steal the pre-show though and revealed several new trailers and release dates for their core lineup.  First up: Super Mario 3D Land which will be released in North America on November 13th.

    • Next we have Mario Kart 7 which will be released on December 4th.

    • Kirby Return to Dreamland for the Wii is coming out on October 24th.

    • Kid Icarus: Uprising has seen a delay and will not make its intended release window for this year.  Nintendo claims that the 2012 release date is intended to help provide more polish.  It wouldn't surprise me though if it was instead meant to incorporate use of the newly announced 3DS slide-pad accessory.
    • Finally, Nintendo announced that Monster Hunter 4 is coming to the 3DS.  Here's the announcement trailer:

So far I think everything out of TGS has been pretty impressive. The extra $75 added to the Wi-Fi only Vita is a pretty big bummer, but that launch window is awfully impressive. The 3DS is finally getting the games that people want. Return to Dreamland looks really great.

Only one question remains. How does Brad feel about Mario Kart having underwater segments?

I'm happily excited for the Playstation Vita. They really aren't fucking around when it comes to the launch. Kirby's return to dream land looks sweet, but reminds me of New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Lastly DOA5 looks interesting. I'm really looking forward to other Vita announcements.

I thought Kirby's Return to Dreamland looked like Super Smash Bros. gameplay, then I saw you could play with 4 players and I was totally right. Still it looks very fun

I'm most excited to hear about the remake of Final Fantasy X. Which I think is the best overall FF game to be developed.

I really dislike Super Mario 3D Land's music. Am I the only one?

    Great pre-TGS coverage!

Multiplayer for Ninja Gaiden? Interesting, I want to try it out. And Kirby is always good xD
I have wanted a Vita for a while now.....Mostly for Dragon's Crown, Uncharted, and possibly UMvC. I'm really glad that it has decent launch titles.

However, I'm hoping for more PWvsPL news lol. I'm already disappointed about them not showing Last Guardian...

My best time was Kirby Super Star's coop, I couldn't play a Kirby game without it. This one is promising, I'm probably play Metaknight the most though lol.
