It seems that another franchise of mine might be going through some major changes. First reported by Siliconera, Dead Space 3, the next entry in EA's hit horror franchise might be swapping dark corridors for blinding light and snow. While this is purely rumor at the moment, it seems that we are getting somewhat close to an official announcement from EA. Just this week, an EA behind the scenes video featured a rather obvious Dead Space 3 logo in the background:
While Dead Space and its sequel were both polished and well paced, the formula was already starting to show signs of aging by the time I reached the end of Dead Space 2. There are only so many dark corridors and monster closets that one can take before it starts to get old. If this shift is indeed going to take place, I could see Dead Space 3 drawing a lot of comparisons to Extermination, an early PS2 horror game that had players fighting alien monsters in brightly lit, snowy environments with limited visibility. While that game was far from perfect, I would merely attribute it's troubles to limitations of the hardware. It looks like Visceral may have recognized the potential within Extermination and saw some obvious opportunities to freshen up their popular franchise.
With that said, I hope that these rumors prove to be true and that Visceral is willing take more chances with their next title. If anyone at EA reads this, i'm sure fans would be ok with some new weapons, new monsters (also rumored), and even a new main character to better flesh out this universe. Hint hint.
A bunch of enticing details about this rumored project seem to have leaked to writers at Siliconera. Once again, these are merely rumors until proven true so take them with a grain of salt. The story details can be found here: [Source]

I think we all knew that Dead Space 3 was pretty much inevitable, regardless of setting change or not. Personally I really don't mind one way or another. More of the dark corridors would mean more of the same, which would honestly still sell. Moving it to a snow environment is a cool idea ( I like snow environments) but I'm sure that would draw a lot of comparisons to the Lost Planet series. One thing I would like is no more Issac Clarke. I do like Issac, but I think it would be beneficial (if they in fact move to a new setting) to see it through the eyes of someone unfamiliar. I just hope they market it a lot better than they did Dead Space 2.

It would be awesome if a blindingly white snow world was the setting. Great way of keeping the suspense and surprise elements while taking an interesting new direction. The first thing that came to my mind was the Ice World scene from Star Trek when Kirk gets stranded and fights off snow monsters before he finds Spock.

I fear that this franchise is gonna end up like F.E.A.R. Like its just gonna be more and more less scary. I mean dead space 2 wasnt that scary....

Visceral, don't do this to me. You guys can do the Survival/Horror genre so well, you just need to lay off the Action genre and everything will fall right into place for this sequel. However, I stand by to wonder when this game is being released, and hope Dead Space isn't becoming one of those bi-yearly release games. That would pretty much spell doom for this young franchise. v-v

Honestly I don't care as long as I get to smash up some heads by way of stomping!

Good.
Maybe with a new character we could have some decent story go on.
No more campy dead girlfriends.

Not a series I really care about all that much mainly because I never found the series actually scary. While it might be interesting to see what a AAA title this generation does with snow we will probably just have monsters jumping out of snowbanks and out from behind polar bears now.

I uh, i guess? Maybe? Idk about dead snow.
Also, whoever photoshoped that picture wins.

I think it would be pretty interesting, but not really game changing. For some reason, and I can't really figure as to why, but while reading the news I pictured the change to a snowy and more lit Dead Space to be somewhat comparable to how Uncharted 2 was "snowy" as well. That part took place later on in the game, but did not make up the whole length, nor did it harbor any significant gameplay changes. I see this being the same way with a game like Dead Space; with a formula that they know works, they'll just be adding snow. You'd still be doing the exact same damn thing, but it'll be brighter!
I would not mind that in the slightest to be honest.

Darkness is not required for horror, im fine with this.

Never a fan of Dead Space, but I can't imagine it holding it up for 3 whole games.

I really hope this will play out more like the movie, "The Thing"

It's an interesting approach, but the differences between a dark room and a blindingly bright one are slim as far as fear goes. It's a welcome change with a lot of potential, for sure, but they'll have to know how to get really creative with it. I haven't played the games much myself, but from what I've seen they do what they're supposed to and they do it well enough. I have a good feeling that, at the very least, fans of the series won't be disappointed.

I don't know about you guys, but I would rather still play as Issac. After seeing his personality in Dead Space 2 I would like to see how he would handle different situations. I mean yea, he was in two games already but in the first one, we really didn't get to know his cause he was just that guy in the mask that gets ordered around.
