Last week Team Ninja announced on twitter that they would be revealing a new game at TGS this year. Today they've come forward with a teaser poster and some footage for Dead or Alive 5, the next installment in their 3d fighting game series. Although perhaps better known for its large chested females than its gameplay, the series has recently seen some critical success on the Nintendo 3DS with Dead or Alive: Dimensions. Dead or Alive 5 is being developed for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 and will mark the first console release for the series since 2005.

To accompany the announcement pre-alpha gameplay footage was released and showcased a fight between series' ninjas Ryu Hayabusa and Hayate on a construction site. From what little can be drawn from the footage it seems like the fighting environment will be more dynamic than it's predecessors. Previous Dead or Alive games allowed you to throw characters off buildings, bounce them off electrified walls, or knock them into the path of speeding cars. Dead or Alive 5 seems to be expanding on environmental gameplay by completely morphing stages mid-battle. Aside from that the basic combat looks relatively similar to previous installments.

Dead or Alive 5 is expected to release sometime in 2012 for the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Actually the way the stage changes is kinda cool, I'm not big into fighters and ones with busty anime chicks as a selling point don't really do it for me either. None the less a very awesome stuff.

Well, if they don't overplay the whole OMG GIANT BOOBIEz thing this could actually be really cool. I like the usage of environment.

well with all the new fighting games coming i think it's about time i started to really get into genre and i really can't see any good reason why i should ignore this game yet...even if they do put too much focus on the sex appeal. A good game is a good game right?
but while were on the topic of boobs, does anyone else find it strange that in series that really tries to flaunt it's ah... "female character design" that the first game play footage is of the few male characters in the game? not saying that it's a problem or anything >.>

I'm finding it hard to believe that this video didn't contain gratuitous, humongous tits flopping around everywhere. I can't tell if this is because they want their game to be taken more seriously, or if it's because jiggle physics just haven't been added yet.

Maybe without Itagaki, it'll be less boob-centric? Haha... I enjoy and have played every single release of the main series--even thought it was hilarious to max out the age on DOA2 (which controlled, er, buoyancy)--but I think a part of me just doesn't care enough about fighting games anymore. Still, I'll keep an eye on any news that surface.

I remembered playing Dead or Alive on the Saturn when it came out, I really liked the counter system. Nowadays that's not a rare thing, but at the time it was a big part of my enjoyment of the game.

When the sequel came out on the Dreamcast, I enjoyed that one a lot too, with the beautiful environments and fun level of interaction. The castle level where you could knock people inside it was one I remember strongly.

After that, though, I just lost contact with the franchise, through the sequels and the bizarre volleyball spin-offs. I'll be willing to give this one a look at see how it goes, and see if it can get me back on board.
