I love Valve. Every single game they've created has been a good product and their seminal Half-Life series continues to be one of the most beloved franchises in the history of gaming. With mounting tension in the Valve community in regard to the company's ongoing silence regarding the next entry in Gordan Freeman's continuing adventures Valve has seen fit to begin the ramp-up to their next big title: Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
Wait, what?
Yea, you read that right. Evidence has been mounting over the past couple days of a new title in the grandaddy of competitive online shooters. According to several Twitter posts, a Reddit IAMA, and a thread on the offical Counter-Strike: Source forums, the game should be announced quite soon. The most compelling evidence however comes from the forum post as one of the game designers at Valve, Jess Cliffe, who is the co-creator of the original Counter-Strike, confirmed that the game's official title is Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. This now gives context to a very awkward reaction Gabe Newell had when put on the spot back in March regarding a Counter-Strike sequel.
The evidence is overwhelming and while it is disappointing that we aren't getting the Half-Life 3 announcement that we all deserve to hear (coming in 2026!) it is pleasing to hear that the old girl is receiving a much needed sequel.
One thing we can be certain of about this game though: HATS.
[UPDATE]
Well, that certainly didn't take too long. Given these developments Valve has decided to go ahead and announce Global Offensive. The game will arrive in Spring 2012 and is being co-developed by Hidden Path Entertainment, the studio responsible for popular tower defense title Defense Grid: Awakening. The game is said to feature new maps as well as updates to old ones, new gameplay modes, leaderboards, and matchmaking.
Most surprising though are the release platforms: Steam (of course), Xbox Live Arcade and the Playstation Network. The game will be playable on the show floor at Pax Prime which makes me even more mad that I can't go to Seattle that weekend. Here's the game's logo:

Could be the F2P game valve said they are working on

Hats....ugh. Completely pointless in my opinion.

I already know lots of people who won't play it unless it's similar to how CS1.3 was.

Will they stop making counter fucking strikes and make half life 3....

Hey, y'know what game I've really liked for a few years? Counter-Strike.
I'm interested to see what this project holds. I'd be really sad to see it go the route of a Call of Duty clone, though. Persistent leveling, perks, carry-over unlockables, all of these things can fuck right out of Counter-Strike.

Put hats in the game, and all will be forgiven.

I never played Counter Strike, but this game looks like Half Life 2 as did the first Counter Strike looked like Half Life 1? Well I don't know if I should give this a try. Maybe it's because I'm not a online person. I think I'll pass.

I hope they don't decided aiming down the sight is a good thing.

HATS! D:
Thanks for this article, all I'd heard about it was rumours on twitter but its better to see the sources.
Have to say I'm a bit disappointed (false hope that they were going to announce Episode 3 next =[) though I never got the chance to play Counter-strike so I'm looking forward to this!
Great news for fans of Counter-strike though I assume...which is great!

I've never played Counter Strike, but I've always heard great things about the fun and addictive multiplayer. I need a gaming PC lol. If I ever get one, I'll definitely give this a shot.

I played a lot of Counter-Strike 1.6 some years ago and really liked the gameplay.
Hopefully it will be more like the old CS game and less like the modern day warfare FPS games.
Maybe they can take some notes from SWAT series. You could have missions in houses with doors and stuff and other missions that real CT forces deal with.

Thanks for the quick update, yea, if steamplay cross-platform is available between PS3/Steam players I'll be surely grabbing this. I do question this still thought because Team Fortress on PS3 has not given any update or connectivity yet, and it still has quite a lot of players in it.

I really hope they go the route that TF2 took and made it f2p, other than that this looks really awesome

Who the hell is Gordan Freeman?

PS3 an XBLA? Awww yeah!

I've actually never played Counter Strike before but I'm afraid that if I start with this game and it turns out to be shit in the eyes of Counter Srtike fans , I'll probably be the only person that enjoys it.

lets face it Half life2 ep 3 or the official half life 3 won't happen in our life time.
13 years, 4 months ago
Oh wow, this actually looks really awesome. Can't wait to see how it plays.
13 years, 4 months ago
Well this is somewhat interesting from Valve. I have been playing CS for quite some time now, ever since I got 1.6 years and years ago. I wonder what kind of software they will be using besides the source engine on this, and how much of a change it will be from the old ones. I still hope people can make surf maps :P

I am ashamed to never have a good enough computer to have effectively played these games. I am stoked that it is released for XBA!
13 years, 4 months ago
It's awesome that they're releasing these for game consoles since my computer can't handle recent games.

Not at all the Gamescom announcement I expected from Valve. Thought it'd be something DotA 2 related. Counterstrike certainly is due for a sequel, seeing as how the last release was CS: Source. Now I just sit and wait for the unjustified PC fanboy rage of it coming to consoles.
Would be nice to hear something about Half-Life 3 in the near future, but I trust Valve. HL or not, I know I'm getting a good game. I'm satisfied with whatever they put out.

I don't know what they plan on bringing to the table for this edition, I guess we will see.
13 years, 4 months ago
A new Counter-Strike? I'm interested. With hats? Eh CS doesn't seem like a "hat" kind of game. Though it would be cool if it let you customize your players in some sort of way (besides hats.)
13 years, 4 months ago
If they can find a way to get rid of the aimbots and whatnot, I'd probably be more inclined to play this
13 years, 4 months ago
Well, this is interesting. Not sure if I'll get this one yet if it's not F2P, but it was just announced. As long as it doesn't fall into the cliches of the modern FPS and sticks with the working formula.
I'm also all for cross-platform because it gives you more players and people don't need to buy a decent gaming rig, though I prefer my FPS on the PC.

I only played CS for a bit. Idk if this update will bring me back
13 years, 4 months ago
CS....now with HATS!
13 years, 4 months ago
never played a CS game before, but i hear nothing but good things about them. Also, isnt one of the more popular modes a non respawning mode? Those are my favorite multiplayer types.
13 years, 4 months ago
I'm interested in seeing what new stuff they add to it. As far as I can tell, Source was just an engine upgrade from 1.6 with a few different mechanics, and man, I had some good times back in the day with 1.6. Maybe I'll finally get back into CS now. :P

Im big player of css (played, at least 500 hours) and man i can't fucking wait.
This is a big suprise from valve.
13 years, 4 months ago
Hmm, I'm interested to see how it plays. As long as they don't add any perks or killstreaks, It should be a good game. Gotta put your faith in Valve.

New counter-strike? YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Xbla and PSN?
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFf......
13 years, 4 months ago
Fuck everything about this.
13 years, 4 months ago
Its coming to consoles!
13 years, 4 months ago
I don't really know what to think about this, i'm glad its coming to consoles (since i dont really have a gaming PC at ALL) but still, that could be a problem also.
13 years, 4 months ago
I'm wondering if they're going to attempt cross-platform play for the PC/PSN version like they did with Portal 2.
13 years, 4 months ago
-Mihn Le (original creator of CS) is not on-board with the project
-Using the CS:S developers
-Xbox Live Arcade and the Playstation Network
Pretty bleh, got low hopes, low expectations, one of the few project valve probably can't pull off.

XBLA release, you say? Count me in, I've always wanted to play Counter Strike.
13 years, 4 months ago
this is very cool id really like to play an updated version CS
13 years, 4 months ago
Didn't really spend alot of time in CS 1.x, but I did play quite a bit of CS:Source. Those were some great times for FPS. A game I really enjoyed playing night after night.
Excited that there is going to be another CS game.
13 years, 4 months ago
This might give me a good reason to come back to the counter strike series :).
13 years, 4 months ago
If they are not creating a new engine for this game, then its probably going to be f2p. I've played both 1.6 and cs:s and liked them both, but Valve needs to come up with some fresh ideas or a new engine if they want this game to stand out and not to be another cs:s. Bottom line, I'm not expecting this Cs game to be a true Cs 2.
13 years, 4 months ago
noooz . I think it will be fucked because they want to adapt it on xbox360 and ps3
13 years, 4 months ago
Always wanted to play Counterstrike...never got the nerve to download it..

Counter strike is a great shooter. Glad to see it getting some console love.
