When Borderlands arrived back in 2009 most of the gaming press and industry analysts thought that, while it would be a good game, it certainly wouldn't sell well. And, of course, we all know what happened: the game went on to be the biggest success Gearbox Software has had since the early days of Opposing Force and Halo's PC version. Who'd have thought that a game based on the idea of killing millions of bandits and mercenaries with billions more guns and explosives with four player co-op would do so well.
Not to skip out on a good thing Gearbox announced today that one of the previously unannounced projects they'd been working on is, in fact, Borderlands 2. The game returns to the world of Pandora and even though The Vault has been closed for good there's plenty left for the game's new characters to explore including "new and more diverse environments, smarter and more powerful enemies, and an improved mission system capable of delivering a better story."
Game Informer's September issue, which should be in mailboxes within the next week and a half or so, has the cover story but the game will be fully unveiled in Europe at Gamescom and will mark its North American appearance at Pax Prime. Since I won't be able to go (damn it) I can only wish that Nick, Brad, and the rest of the 4Player expedition dieinafire enjoy themselves.
For the full GI September cover image look below. I'm personally excited to see Borderlands get a proper sequel though I'm not particularly happy that its set in Pandora. If they can live up to the claim of more lush environments and actually had enemies that weren't re-skinned to fit the areas they inhabit I think it'd be more enjoyable. That, and making the game a more enjoyable singleplayer experience would be gold in my book.

Sounds pretty cool but I really hope Gearbox actually does everything that they promise this time. They had said that Borderlands 1 would have no loading screens and randomized environments. In reality, the loading screens were quite long and the environments were not randomized at all. Also, maybe it was just my luck but I don't remember finding any really cool guns in borderlands. The coolest gun I found was a sniper that shot a rocket instead of a bullet, but even that was almost useless to me as I was playing as the Siren.

What happened to the 'Borderworlds' trademark that was issued last year?

I'm probably half-way through Borderlands and so far I've enjoyed it, for the sequel I was hoping a different planet or something but I'll be sure to try it out.

The first Borderlands was very enjoyable for me. I hope Gearbox improves on the environments and enemy types you encounter.

Good, I was a bit worried that it was taking so long, should have known it would be back sometime. Here's to hoping it improves on the great original.
