Thank you Nintendo of America. If not for you, I would be way too lazy to mod a Wii. But your lovable localization policies that prevent any other publishers from doing what you are too cheap to do have finally won me over. I would have settled for playing a plain old North American copy right out of the box, but since I have to mod my Wii and play the European version, I now get to do all kinds of other devious things. I will get to play all of the other games you screwed us out of too. Sweet! Do they have a mods that will let me play games with wiimote-only controls on a proper controller? That alone would make modding my Wii worth it.

Regardless, Xenoblade does seem worth the effort. Developed by Monolith Soft (Xenosaga, Baten Kaitos, Soma Bringer), this game seems to fill a gap in the sink-hole that is current gen JRPGs. Think Final Fantasy 12 meets Star Ocean and you are almost there. Here's some footage of the English localization in action:

Perhaps the biggest reason to flex your Jrpg boners is the amazing soundtrack. Yoko Shimomura (Kingdom Hearts, Street Fighter 2, Legend of Mana, Parasite Eve) and Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Xenogears) are responsible for this masterpiece. Yeah, I know. Just listen to some of the tracks:

Gaur Plains
Snowy Mt. Valac
Colony 9
The Night Before the Decisive Battle
Unfinished Battle
Mechanical Rhythm
Confrontation with the Enemy
The Awakening of the Giant

That's too bad. Can't wait to mod my Wii that I never play because Nintendo doesn't localize interesting things.

After doing a little research on my own, it looks legit (although I am not sold until Nintendo releases an official statement)

A majority of the soundtrack is actually composed by ACE+ and Manami Kiyota. It is still an excellent OST, the best I have heard since Nier.

These Soundtracks are seriously gems of scores in videogames :) Seriously, when music is that good, the gaming experience becomes so much richer!

Never realized the musical staff for Xenoblade had such pedigree. After hearing some of those linked tracks (especially Confrontation with the Enemy and Mechnical Rhythm) my anticipation of the game has increased threefold.
    Modded wii, here I come!

Nintendo of America has royally screwed up.

For those of you who don't know, Xenoblade is one of three JRPGs that Nintnedo has flat-out refused to bring over, the other two being Pandora's Tower, and The Last Story. The sole reason cited, as far as I know, has been that the cost of localization is too much to warrant a North American run of discs.

What completely astounds me, though, is that these games are already being localized in English for European audiences. It would cost next to nothing for Nintendo to print NTSC-formatted discs, and they could even turn a profit if they don't print like a billion copies. So long as supply meets demand, and doesn't surpass it by all that much, they would win out in the end.

But on top of that, these are three games on the Wii that hardcore audiences would actually care about. This is the Wii we're talking about. The damn thing hasn't had a decent game worth playing in eight months (and some would argue, even longer than that). The only thing to look forward to in the coming months is Skyward Sword. The console is stagnating. Bringing over three games that people seem to genuinely care about could revitalize the console, and get people thinking about Nintendo again for the first time in a good long time.

Oh, and it's not like they don't have an idea of the audience for these games. I mean, looking at sales numbers alone, it's plain to see that these games could (and probably would) outsell the Japanese market, if not the European market as well. It happened with No More Heroes, Rune Factor Frontier, Sin and Punishment: Star Successor, MadWorld, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, and I could go on and on. And this isn't to mention the huge fan outcry, in the form of organizing a letter-writing campaign for all three of the games I've mentioned, called Operation Rainfall. And yet, Nintendo of America still announces that they have no plans to bring any of these games overseas.

I really don't buy that money is the issue. Even without all of the seemingly-consistent sales numbers pointing to far more sales in the American market than either Japan or Europe, I find it extremely hard to believe that a multibillion dollar company like Nintendo can't afford to localize these games and sell them in America, if only to keep the name of their company fresh in peoples' minds while they ramp up to the release of a new console. That, while smaller companies like Atlus can afford to localize something as niche as Persona or Catherine with big-name American voice actors (at least, in the anime industry), Nintendo can't bring these games, which are already in English, to the States on the cheap. It's absurd.

This whole thing is just sad. It makes me really glad that I decided to softmod my Wii, because it means I'll be able to play the European releases for these games.

Xenoblade is slated for release this September, with The Last Story and Pandora's Tower scheduled for 2012. I'd say to look for them on store shelves, but i

Why doesn't Nintendo want people to play good games? I don't get it. I'm thinking NoE swapped people with NoA because Europe is getting better stuff now instead of getting totally screwed like they did in the past.

Also, hacking the Wii is so easy since Nintendo doesn't seem to care about fixing exploits and stuff that let you, even without modchips and stuff.

While I do live in the EU (UK specifically) I hadn't actually seen anything on this game and had assumed it wasn't being localised because it's fanbase was too niche or something.
However, after seeing that video and hearing that soundtrack, I honestly think it's almost tragic that NoA isn't going to be localising this game for you NA folks.

This game has caught my attention like JRPGs haven't since... well, in all honesty the last JRPG I played (ironically via import as we never got it here in England) was Xenogears for the PS1. A game I loved and to this day still listen to the soundtrack to on a fairly often occasion.

Ahh well, screw NoA. As long as you are capable of modding your Wii and getting an import, at least you should be able to play it still. It IS a shame it won't reach much of a wider audience because of that, though.

The whole idea of having multiple different Wii's, such as the japanese wii and the american one just blows my mind. Why not have just one system for the world?

There's an error in the article. The soundtrack (91 tracks) is mainly composed by Manami Kiyota and ACE+. Yoko Shimomura composed 11 tracks, while Yasunori Mitsuda ONLY composed 1 song. You should give credit to the first two instead of the composers you mentioned.
