A couple of interesting things have been going on at the NYU Game Center, a design and development research center for games in New York City.
First is the continuation of their game lecture series, where various people from the game industry speak on different topics regarding games. The most recent (very informal) lecture from Erik Wolpaw has been posted in full video form. Wolpaw started video game commentary site Old Man Murray along with current Valve coworker Chet Faliszek and has written for games like Psychonauts and, most recently, the Portal series.
In the lecture, Wolpaw focuses on the design and writing of Portal 2. He also touches on the process at Valve. You can watch it here.
The other thing at the Game Center is the second annual No Quarter exhibition, which mainly features games commissioned for the event. Last year’s event commissioned Mark Essen’s 2D, two player versus fencing game Nidhogg; Robin Arnott’s creepy, no-visuals game Deep Sea; and Matt Parker’s flail inspiring Recurse. It also featured 16 Tons, an installation strategy game by game designer and academic Eric Zimmerman and Nathalie Pozzi, architect.
This year, the No Quarter exhibition will feature commissioned games by Terry Cavanagh (most well known for VVVVVV), Ramrio Corbetta (a developer on IGF winner Glow Artisan) and Charley Miller (many nondigital games). It will also feature the already released Clock by Luke O’Connor.
Opening night is May 12 at 7 PM, and the exhibition will run through the end of the month. It is located at 721 Broadway, 9th Floor in New York City.

Chet and Erik are cool. Before they were at Valve they had some good comedy at Old Man Murray website. Check it out! Its ancient for the internet though.
