og:image:,

After not sleeping all night, I finished a game this morning around 7:30 am. I had been tough stuffing it all of it into two days. But I got it done. Looking back on my twitter, began to wonder. Why do I keep playing these games? What's the point of playing a game, giving my honest feelings, and then having people look at me like I'm crazy or say things with little respect towards my opinions? People just want hear about a love fest. Why play a game I "don't" enjoy? People always have always asked me that question. Or they say "David, if you're not enjoying it, just stop playing."

For the purposes of keeping on topic, I'm not going to go into details or even tell you which game it was. If you're really curious, read my twitter or listen to tonight's show. I just want to share my thoughts with you guys, as readers but also as peers. I've played games for a long time and have had numerous heated discussion with friends and showmates about likes or dislikes.

Frustrations have arose because sometimes we don't see eye to eye. It's extremely disappointing for me when I just don't understand what people are so ecstatic about. I hear people talk positively about a game and so I seek it out trying to capture some of that magic. I won't argue that there isn't some sort of contamination. Anti-hype and others' opinions distort a clear image but I think I've done as good a job as possible to stick with just the facts.

I have certain tendencies. I enjoy a positive message. I'm not into the angst and rebellion a lot of video games have become. I hate that people have forgotten their roots. I am critical of the believable story and prefer certain story telling modes over others. But as frustrating as those may have been, I feel I've been able to over come those to reach a better understanding of games because of it. I've become a better game player both in skill and willingness to try something outside my genre.

People like to say that I'm no good at stealth games. And for the most part, I'll give them that even though I don't necessarily agree. From my past experiences on the live feed, I could see why someone would come to that conclusion. But has it ever gotten to a point where I completely gave up on a stealth game because I couldn't find a way around my so called weaknesses?

Exactly. Where others' failed or wouldn't even dare to attempt, I've triumphed. Puzzle games. My intellect is far superior. Action Games. I might get knocked me down, but I'll just keep getting back up. Shooters, fuck my aim. Just give me some more bullets. Stealth. Man, fuck stealth, I'm a boss. I'll make all the noise I want. Music games? Come on. I invite any of you to step out on the DDR dance floor with me.

Why do I keep playing games? Because I make games my bitch.

Literally, the thought of beating a game, excites me. I get turned on by seeing the credits role. Knowing that I was better than it. That I took everything it could dish out. That's what keeps me playing.

I'm not going to quit just because a couple chatter tell me to stop. I'm going to keep becoming a better player so I can beat more games. I'll overcome my short comings. I'll face my weaknesses head on. And I challenge you to do the same. Don't just play one particular genre. Play them all. Don't make an opinion based on what I say. Play it for yourself. Make your own opinion. Make your own mistakes.

You can even use me as your example/role model. I'll play the part of your Hero. The one you look up to. Your guiding star. The Center of Your Universe. Your Sun.

I've come to realize, this is my calling. Now more than ever, People need a Hero. It's about time I lived up to it.

Besides, who else on this site is there to to look up to?

Nice monologue, actually pretty inspiring in a way.
Getting turned on by seeing the credits role? Never heard anyone else say that about games in my life.
Haha, that's what makes David, David.

That is some epic fan-art to go with some dedicated speech-making. Everyone's entitled to his/her preferences, but it's nice to know where those preferences are coming from.

    Cold Blooded.......

But I've also noticed that people ignore or avoid any criticism if that negativity is aimed at a game everyone typically loves, I've gone on rants to my friends about how Bioshock's story isn't anything special and that the atmosphere is what makes the game, they'll look at me with blank stares.

That's what I call dedication. I love games... but man, I can only get like what 2-4 games a year, so all of these games that you all get to play I SO wish could play. It's the main reason I watch you guys a lot, so I can at least see the games I can probably never get. I gotta be smart and pick games that aren't only good, but can last me quite a while. I'm starting to look at Gamefly so I can play a lot more games, but we'll see.

Damn dude. That's a pretty heavy monologue, on games no less. But I love that mindset of yours. The playing for victory route is one I see eye-to-eye with. Mine is similar, times two brothers. And I lose a lot, to both them, and just the game itself. But when I beat both brothers, and the game, its glorious.

Pretty great actually. I personally am blessed with vidya gaems skills so I don't get this much but I get it still. But yeah I still like to hear your opinions on a popular game even if you dislike the genre or whatever it be. Not exactly playing devils advocate but your just not sucking on the games nuts.

Just remember to maintain some kind of balance. If you focus too much of your time playing games that just annoy or frustrate you then you'll go crazy. Sometimes you have to look to the past, at games you may have missed the opportunity to play, to find something that actually makes being a gamer worthwhile.

I really don't know what to think of this. On one hand I think maybe you're playing games for the wrong reason. If you're not having fun and are just playing to show off or prove that you can, that is not the right reason. On the other I understand the satisfaction of overcoming a challenge that you or others think you cannot. I also understand playing through something for the sake of what you do, sharing your opinion to others etc.

In all honesty though if you came up to me and said "Hey, I beat all these crappy games I didn't want to play and didn't think I could beat but did." I would say that's great you were able to do that but then I would ask "Did you have fun doing it?" and then you replied "No." I would say well whats the point then? and would careless. So I will end with, if the journey is meaningless whats the point in getting to the end of it?

Nice post, David. You always keep yours interesting.

But yeah, I'd think you'd have to look at what PancakeChef said about not only beating a game but enjoying it. I, myself, don't get the same thrill that you do from watching the credits roll on a game that was absolutely hated. Come to think of it, if I wasn't enjoying it, I most likely wouldn't even finish. Watching the end of a game I did not enjoy leaves me thinking why did I even do it.

But you do have a point. People really shouldn't restrict themselves to one or few genres. I never took interest in "realistic" war games, something like Call of Duty or Battlefield or whatever. Never saw the appeal. But last month, I had to babysit over at another house for a few weeks, and they didn't have many games. But they did have COD Modern Warfare. I decided to play it out of curiosity, and I finished it. And then I realized that I actually, genuinely LIKED the game. Needless to say, I'm thinking about getting into more games similar to it.

And making those games my bitch.

Reading this post did get me inspired to finally do something I never thought of doing. I shall lead myself away from the survivor horror, one player stuff, To finally Branch out and try to do my best at winning and being maybe even better than my Cousin at Her First person shooters! I will be good at zombies mode in COD: Black ops.

P.S. Epic speech is epic!, But that last line made me Lol.

David as a role model is not half bad. I have met many people who could use a better role model or one in general. It's tough to be a good role model and it's best when it happens naturally. Do more, and be more, than ever thought possible. Do not defend limits, to defend limits is to truly own them. This, as with anything like this, post goes well beyond games.

I agree.. I suck at a lot of games, but I still play because it's fun to beat it~ ^___^
watching you guys play games makes me think I'm not the only one that sucks at some games and take forever to beat them.
