I saw Mortal Kombat being played this weekend. But that’s all I did, watch Joseph play it at the apartment. From what I saw, this is something all fighting games should try to include, a meaty story mode. I wasn’t at all interested in Mortal Kombat. I even took it off my GameFly list last week for Portal 2 and NBA Jam. I don’t find the MK series combat that interesting. I don’t find the story or lore all that interesting either. But when they put effort in creating something for the people in the middle, it's something I can get behind.

The way the story mode is set up resembles the Mortal Kombat movies starring Robin Chou. Shang Sung is the villain and Liu Kang and his band of merry do gooders are out to stop him by winning the tournament. The game has you assume the role of a character for the length of a chapter depending on story line situation. I saw Joseph work his way to the final encounter with Shang Sung. He “beat” the game as Liu Kang only to find more story waiting. What we ended up deciphering from the Achievement List, he wasn’t even half way through the game.

Needless to say, I was excited to play the game. I’m not looking for the story or acting to blow me away here. All I want is a reason for me to keep playing, a reason to familiarize myself with another character, and something other than a list of opponents to fight until the eventual boss. If Mortal Kombat can deliver on that, I’m pretty sure I’ll be satisfied.

Here’s your chance to impress me,
David

PS – While at Joseph’s Apartment this weekend, I also saw this.

God dammit Joseph is so fine AND he gets all the women. So unfair.

Also theres the 300 level challenge tower. So practically more fights to test with characters and stuffs. And you said you didn't like the bland kind of arcade mode but it also has that as well. I'm tempted to get it at one point despite playing little to no MK ever.

If that's what got your attention then I doubt you'll be disappointed, this game is pretty beefy content-wise. Me and a close friend hit up the midnight release, we spent the entire first night taking turns playing story mode and swapping hands on wins and deaths. I'd recommend trying the 2 player Tag-team Tournament mode if you haven't already, it can be hectically fun.

You and I are on the same wave-length David! I posted a forum community article 2 days ago on the same topic. Even w/ its silly lore, the seam-less story presentation is gripping. It's also proof of concept for the BEST pacing in a 2D-fighter to date.

    Looking. At. Joseph. TO MUCH.

    That is an impressive beard.

And David, I might just rent MK now, I've never really had an interest in that series, always been a Tekken and vs Capcom man.

    Cheers.

Yes, this game has tons of content. They also improved the combat a lot with this game, and of course from what everyone can already see, it looks beautiful.
