There's a handful of interesting stuff on sale this week. Crazy Taxi, for one, is half off this week at five dollars so I'll be picking that up. I played it on the Dreamcast collection and enjoyed it. I found the Xbox 360 controller to be much better than trying to use the old Dreamcast controller. Plus that's one of those kinds of games where you just want to turn it on and play a few rounds with no real commitment. Having to search for a disc to play 15 minutes of a game is absurd.
But where I'm having a hard time deciding is with two other games on sale. Afterburner Climax and the Mirror's Edge Time Trials DLC. Both are half off this week as well. As you know, my general rule with download titles is buy first day or buy when on sale. Even if I'm not going to play them immediately, having them available for the future is worth paying the money now.
After Burner Climax
I have no experience with After Burner. I remember seeing it in the arcades as a child. It came in two versions, this weird cabinet with a stick and a intimidating rotating cockpit version. I was kind of a timid kid so I was never able to get the courage together to jump into that. My only other experience was going to a family friends house and seeing him play Afterburner on some Sega Genesis Add on that I still to this day don't recognize (I was a Nintendo Kid). As far as I know, you fly around in a jet and shooting things. I feel like a lot of the draw was seeing the cool graphics and flying around crazily in a jet. At the stage of my life, Jet's aren't nearly as cool as they once were so give me another reason to pick this game up?
Mirror's Edge Time Trials
I'm also thinking about the Mirror's Edge Time Trials DLC pack. I wasn't a huge fan of Mirror's Edge. I felt level designs to be very nitpicky and catching yourself on a snag would just slow the entire game down. I know this is somewhat a reflection on my skill but having to repeat jumps was a downer on the excitement and really killed the flow. But I didn't hate it to where I wouldn't give these time trials a shot. I certainly won't ever pay full price for them though. I know there's a huge difference in terms of visual cues in the DLC but is there anything here for me that I didn't already get in the main game?
Well thanks for your opinions. I'm also tinkering around with the Strania and the Islands of Wakfu demos. I don't think I'll get them but I'd appreciate your input if you had any. I guess to wrap this up, I won't be buying the Mass Effect Arrival DLC until it's discounted. I haven't heard the greatest stuff about that so make sure you do your research.
Thanks guys, I look forward to hearing from you.

As a huge fan of Mirrors Egde, and having 100% finished this DLC, I can tell you that it is definitely aimed at people who are really into the game. I can't see a "casual" fan getting much enjoyment out of it, as the time trials are mostly about topping leaderboards and competing with your friends. They can also be super frustrating, as a lot of it is just trial and error... There is usually just one path through the level that is the quickest, so it's just a matter of doing that without fucking up, and restarting over and over again if you get it wrong.
With that said though, I would recommend you check out some of the time trials that come with the original game before making your decision... It is really fun trying to get through them in a quick time, although, again, it is usually just trial and error. I finished all the time trials with the highest ranking by trying to emulate some runs I saw on youtube, and that was insanely fun.

If you liked the motorcycle and missile minigame sequences that were in the chapters 8 and 14 of Bayonetta respectively, you could give Afterburner Climax a shot. And if you didn't like Mirror's Edge that much, I don't think it's necessary to buy the DLC. It has a set of mere visually different stages, after all. Beating a buddy's high score on that should still prove to be challenging, addicting and fun.
If I had to choose one over the other, it would probably be the Mirror's Edge DLC. What I truly recommend however, is that you spend your money on something else on the next sale if you don't find either of them appealing beforehand. You wouldn't be missing out on too much, and it's naturally good not to buy things one doesn't like, even when on discount.

I wouldn't recommend the Mirror's Edge DLC. It's fun and all, but it's only for the players who want more than the on-disc time trails. It's beautiful, but you get tired of it quickly. I haven't played Afterburner, but I think you get more game for the money.

That Afterburner does look like a lot of fun. But, if you're at all thinking about getting either, now is the best time to do so. From what the others are saying, only someone like Nick would get the time trials, so maybe it wouldn't be for you. But Afterburner is just mindless fun, and that's always good. If I were you, I'd pick that one up.

Afterburner is great. I really enjoyed it because of the plane thing but the fact you kept getting faster, better, stronger, etc made me love it even more. Like Joseph mentioned in his review you kind of got that metroidvania feel of upgrades. Also it has an easy 200 cheevos.

I thought this game would be fun when I saw first saw it. Then, the Rep could not get passed a balance portion of the demoed level. He had to retry to the point of eating up a massive amount of time from the demo. At that moment I knew, Mirror's Edge wasn't for me. Looked great, but maybe another game like it with more varied gameplay would be better. If anything the DLC looks better than the base game. The DLC focuses on the best features of Mirror's Edge.
