Remember how strange it sounded when we heard that the Scribblenauts developer, 5th Cell, was working on a multi-player shooter for XBLA? Yeah, like really weird. Well, they have finally revealed what Hybrid is all about, and guess what? Unsurprisingly, it is pretty damn weird.
Now, if you just glance at the footage below, you might not really see anything all that different from any other third person shooter out on the market. Well, you would see crappier graphics and animation, but that really isn't the point. The really weird part is that Hybrid has no free movement whatsoever. Movement is entirely controlled by selecting cover points and having your character auto-run from cover to cover. The player is given a button to retreat, buttons to move around in cover, and the ability to free aim while in cover or during transit. Players also have the ability to select different cover to run to while in transit. Add in a very simple squad bot mechanic and a persistent online war, and it seems like Hybrid might be just different enough to live up to the 5th Cell name. But will it be any good? Watch the gameplay below and see for yourself.
I can't wait to try the game out, because honestly, it sounds too terrible to actually be terrible. It can only be brilliant. And maybe it will be. I could see how this new cover mechanics could allow for more interesting level design -- as navigating to cover points on the ceiling and walls becomes a lot easier than it would be in a game with free movement. I will remain cautiously dumbfounded.
And 5th Cell always has a strong presence at PAX, so hopefully I'll be playing this next weekend.

That's crazy.
So crazy it might just work.

It's weird. You'd expect something like this to be thought up out of necessity (like if they had tried to make a cover-based shooter on the 3DS or PSP with their one analog sticks).
Hopefully, the animations get some polish. Without direct player control, they could do some really crazy life-like movements between cover.

this kind of reminds me of musical chairs with cover : I like it :) can't wait to read a review of this if you play it @ PAX

Looks cool, but there are so many ways this idea could be fucked up. Still, it looks like a lot of fun.

Wut is this? it looks crazy, but dang it looks pretty cool. Although I am worried about how the a.i. will interact with the enviroment.

The idea of having predetermined paths makes it seem more like a tactical competitive puzzle game rather than a shooter.
I like that.

Sweet a shooter where people won't be able to run around and just knife everyone to death. Now I just hope that the assassin bot they mentioned doesn't turn out to be too OP. Heat seeking 1-hit kill sounds like it could be abused pretty badly.

I watched some videos earlier, including the interview. The idea of a more tactical competitive shooter has me really intrigued. I can't wait to see how the final product turns out.

well i can't say i'm surprised that they made a completely different shooter. so far it seems interesting and i look forward to its release. with any luck the game will last longer than these other multiplayer shooters that have been so popular to release these past few years and actually have some impact on the genre.

I really don't know what to think about this it is definitely an interesting way to change up the usual fps mechanics.

I'm glad 5th Cell is around. A development team that isn't afraid to push the boundaries of gaming, making the most of this amazing medium.

I kind of agree, the concept seems like it wouldn't work or gamers would be hesitant to try it out but...it just seems like it may be good. I guess we will just wait and see, it may suck, it may be great. No one really knows.

IMO this game does sound intriguing, but I don't speak for everyone sadly.
Can't wait to hear more about this game
