A House in California (developer: Cardboard Computer), a finalist for the IGF’s Nuovo award this year, is a traditional adventure game in a nontraditional way. The game gives this sense as if you are in some kind of fanciful memory or dream with its nonstandard verbs and the responses to requests (lighting up the house by way of fireflies) throughout. The verbs, which can seem random, are actually a coherent extension of who each person in the game is. The contrast of how each character does a similar task (helping the boy) also strengthens the characterization. The game communicates a delightfully comforting tone that is well worth feeling.

Great game. Hard to understand at first, but afterwards, you kind of develop a deep meaning for the game. (stuck on third level)
