I think Catherine might just be a puzzle game -- like some sort of nightmarish version of Intelligent Cube. And while the game is being developed by the team that made Persona 3 and 4, fans were distraught when they learned that Catherine was not going to be an RPG at all. But I think there was still this assumption that it would be a horror game or an adventure game. Well, after watching the gameplay trailer below, I can safely say many of these people will still be upset.

The good news? I love Intelligent Cube, Tomb Raider, and anything else that features puzzles and giant blocks. I also disliked the last couple of Persona games. And after watching the trailer, I'm far more excited about this game than I ever was before. My only concern might be the game's length. The shorter the game, the less weird shit I get to see. And I like the weird shit. But if you look closely in the trailer, you can see a stage map. And games with stage maps don't tend to be very long. It's true. Anyways, watch the trailer and discuss amongst yourselves.

I haven't pieced it together yet, but there is something very meta going on with the themes of Catherine the the big tease it has been to Persona fans. I find it hilarious.

I'm actually more excited now. I enjoyed Persona 3, but hated Persona 4. I was nervous Catherine may follow with that lack luster half assed feeling, but from seeing all the trailers and finally seeing gamplay, I'm pretty hype for it. The game looks like its going to be tense and fast paced during those scenes, which I love. Heres to hoping they keep it up.

If you care to know a bit about what's going on with Catherine... The down low is.

You play Vincent, who apparently has impregnated his girlfriend Katherine. That's the girl with the glasses. Obviously, that means he'll hafta take responsibility. I do believe that, on the same night, he met Catherine, the blondie there... And had sex with her.

Catherine also happens to be the possessive type who won't forgive him if he cheats on her, meaning she's not some one time fuck. So now he's stuck in a love triangle, with a pregnant girlfriend and an affair.

Add to this, rumors about mysterious deaths in dreams, and Vincent himself finding subject to these very dreams. You can see in the trailer a woman with a wedding gown who looks similar to Katherine amongst other things, the baby for example also connects to Katherine.

Supposedly, the game will contain multiple endings and there are social sim like segments in between the action puzzle platforming bits.

Personally. I still see this game as having the ability to be a sort of survival horror game. The pace at which you need to climb seems pressing enough that it will push your wits forward to figure your way out of danger asap and with a most disturbing of being out to get you from underneath as well as surprises and traps from the layout of the field itself.

Indeed. There is worry for the length of the game, more appropriately the length of the platforming segments. I know the developers announced the estimated time of completion of a single walkthrough, but I seriously don't remember what it was.

Seems though that, much like another Survival Horror game that Atlus made long ago (Hell Night, original japanese title is Dark Messiah), you have no means of survival, the only way to live is to go forward, to run, escape, put as many things in between you and the thing chasing you.

Oh and... need I say? Those nightmares are causing Vincent to suffer from insomnia... Supposedly, this game revolves around needs. Desires... For food... For sex... For sleep... It's a very basic, down to earth concept that reaches back to the most basic needs for human beings. I for one want to see how this is reflected in the story.

I thought that this game would have a slower pace when I thought it wouldn't be an rpg, after seeing this trailer, I would definetly want to try this out. although I do feel there might some rpg elements...maybe not.

Thanks Testsubject909, You managed to deal with some of my WTFs with this game. Honestly, I firstly thought that both Katherine and Catherine were the same character, but like a split personality kind of thing.

What if one version of the game gets one side to the story and the other console gets the other?
E.g. In the trailer shown it seems to be about Katherine in his dream, so it maybe everytime he has sex with Catherine, Katherine haunts him about it.

Eather way, It still looks interesting.

I still have no idea what kind of game this is. I imagined it being some kind of... I dunno, dating sim or visual novel or something Phoenix Wright-ish.
Now it looks more like it's a puzzle/dating sim. Except having multiple chicks to choose from, there's only ONE chick.
Who the main guy apparently refuses to fuck and eventually gets raped.
But most of all, none of this explains why there are SHEEP. Is it some kind of metaphor I'm missing?

I am an avid collector and supporter of most all things Atlus. Hell, my girlfriend bought me a Jack Frost statue for Christmas. I can't wait for this game. I love the mystery behind exactly what the gameplay is for sure. I know that the core mechanic is to race up the tower before getting caught and killed in several grizzly fashions but the way the story ties everything together and what type of real world mechanics there may be has yet to be shown (if there are any).

The climbing reminds me a bit of your standard block puzzle, Qbert, and Intelligent Cube all rolled into one and the puzzle fan in me is really excited. Add on top of that the solid writing (and translations) of the Atlus team and I am really intrigued. I will say this though, the art style makes me think back to SMT: Nocturne and how badly I want the next in the main story arc (I know Strange Journey is out and I own it, but I want a next gen installment dang it!).

I seem to remember the developers saying that the game would be broken down into three segments, one of which was the Nightmare world. That's what this seems to be. I don't think the entire game is going to play out like this, but even if it did I think I would still enjoy it. If this is only one aspect of the game play then it makes me curious as to what the others may be. Either way I like what I see so far.

I don't see this game ever coming out in North America. It's too bad, because this looks genuinely interesting, especially the story. Love triangles are overused as is, but this is an exceptionally dark case of it's use. This game is just really, really dark. I haven't felt this way about a game since I played the first Gears of War, which was morbidly violent and dark.

Can't wait to see how this turns out, or if 4PP can play this on the feed somehow. Not sure if that'll work though, seeing as there's clearly quite a bit of possible nudity.

I'm not usually a puzzle person just because they are usually to easy to figure out in more action based games that think its clever or are only prensent pad out game play. These puzzles look really tense and I wouldn't mind hearing Roy Orbison's "in dreams" one more time in a game :P
This also reminds me of the excitment I have for Shadows of the damned

I have to ask Brad, did you even finish either persona 3 or 4 to warrant your dislike of the series? Admittedly the games had a slow start, but once you delve a little further things get a lot better. These are long games that present more than what is perceived at face value.

I know when you previously played, you felt that the fusion of personae was convoluted and unnecessary, but if you trudged further into the game, more details about this system will become apparent. You just have to have patience and experiment during the early stages.

If the game is ported to America, I will still play the game atleast for the story.
The puzzle gameplay for me, is kinda iffy. Might like it, might not.
I guess we'll just wait and see how it goes.

Thinking how short the game MAY be, I can't help think about how Atlus will implement a deep re-play element. And since these nightmarish segments only seem to be a part of the whole game, I'm intrigued to see how these other segments play a part, if any, in these puzzle-platforming segments. I'm game, count me in.

I really prefer this over it being like Persona 3/4. If I had to say, I think the RPG aspect where you going into each respective game's "Dungeon" to grind and battle was the most boring part of the Persona games, though I still liked it just as well.

From what I understand, it's like Persona with all the social aspects, but instead of RPG battles, it's replaced by puzzle aspects, which I think could be even more fun.

I've always loved the look, music, and themes of the "Persona" games, but yeah, grinding in Tartarus drove me nuts. I like "Catherine"s change of pace. As far as length,I don't mind a short game ALL THAT MUCH considering the multiple endings. Plus a 20-hour puzzle game seems a bit much.

Although I do respect them as proper JRPGs, I hated both Persona 3 and 4. The more gameplay footage I see of Catherine, however, the more excited I get. I can't wait for this game, for it is my most anticipated this year.

    Ah, yes.

I myself love Persona 3. It's the only Persona game I've gotten a chance to play, though. I really like those dating sim sequences and whatnot that you have in the world, and the art style. I love the look of the cutscenes in this. I really do. It stands out and they switch well between the hand-drawn segments and the CGI scenes that keep with the same art style.

And damn, that trailer. The gameplay looks...well...good. I like puzzles. I grew up watching my mum play tomb raider and a lot of other things(man, tomb raider is scary to a four year old). I wouldn't say it would be too great if it weren't for that constant threat. I mean, hell, those monsters being right there and with seemingly no obstacles? Scary. When I play a game, the scariest thing is not being able to outright defeat a monster. You have to run. Close to death and just trying to get safe. Awful feeling, just having to run and not know if the enemy will strike you down right then. Urg.

Also, apparently this game has mystery aspects? If so, fuck yeah! I love the sim parts of Persona 3. I love how Atlus sets up the characters and their stories, and trying to understand what is occurring is always majorly fun. I'm really hyped up for this! I would like to know if it is received well in Japan. I would hope it comes out sometime soon in the states. Before next year. Or at least a proper announcement...

I think this is a horror game, but not in the traditional 'SILENT HILL' sense. It's going to be an understated, 'fuck with your head with disturbing imagery and vague explanations' game. Or at least that's what it feels like.

I'm kinda glad Atlus/Persona team took a break from the JRPG. The puzzle stages kinda remind me of a mix of Shadow of the Colossus (navigation wise, climbing and grappling and jumping onto new faces of the golem, so to speak) and for some odd reason, the art style is reminding me very much of Okami, not just in cell-shading, but in how the shapes are drawn and how it all kind of...flows.

To be honest, I never expected/hoped the game to be an rpg when I saw the first few trailers. It just didn't fit the atmosphere and the characters that were established. Seeing the gameplay here has eased a lot of complications and fears though. I know I won't be able to play it myself but I'll be sure to tune in when you guys do.
