In a strange series of events, I ended up having an internet conversation with my girlfriend in Japan about what exactly the genealogy of the Mario character Yoshi is. I hope this doesn't make her out to look like she has the IQ of a stick. I can vouch for her that she's a really smart person and these kinds of weird situations are why I'm dating her. Anime-esque misunderstandings bring lots of hilarity and freshness to the relationship so I hope you guys don't take this too out of context. Plus it'll probably be pretty embarrassing if she knows I posted this. With that out of the way, here was a recap of the conversation we had. Me in black and her in red.
Yoshi's got a big nose, huh?
Yeah, he does. Poor thing, he's also got a small head too.
Ah, that's probably because he's a dinosaur and isn't very smart.

Oh.... Maybe I watched my brother play it when I was a kid. But I probably didn't pay too much attention.
Okay, so if Yoshi wasn't a Dinosaur what did you think he was?
He's a duck right? Or some kind of bird? Like here... (She pulls out a blue yoshi plush)
See this yoshi is like a penguin. And then the red one is like a red bird. And the white one is like a white bird.
WHAT? What about his tongue? That doesn't make any sense. He's more like a lizard than a bird.
OH! LIZARD! Yeah, I see now. And he's like one of those dinosaurs that breathe fire.
Right, except dinosaurs don't breath fire.
What?... What about Dragons?
Uh...Dragons? Those aren't real.
They're not? Maybe I need to study more about American fiction and fantasy?
Haha, I guess. How'd you ever think he was a duck?
I dunno, I told you I probably wasn't really paying attention.
I mean for goodness sakes, he's wearing boots. Wait, Why is Yoshi wearing Boots anyways? That's pretty ridiculous if he's a dinosaur.

Well thanks for sharing that with us David, I thought it was hilarious. It is kinda funny that she doesn't even know one of the biggest star of video games that came from her country. But I don't blame her, I'm sure I don't know many popular things about my country XD

That's an adorable story. I'm honestly not surprised someone would refer to Yoshi as a bird of some kind. Lots of people I knew thought the Koopa Troopas were Ducks. So yeah.

Haha. That's very cute. A duck makes sense, I mean, chocobos are pretty much accepted in gamer culture. They're big chickens. And Yoshi lays eggs... I could see it. Makes sense.
The shoes totally don't make sense though.

there was a old Mario cartoon and they said Yoshi's a "yoshisour". anyways i looooooooove Yoshi! hes my favorite character. before i say the episode i wondered if he was a Dino, lizard human turtle mix, or a frog thing...........
