At about 6 hours into Valkyria Chronicles 2, I'm already frustrated by what has been lost on the move to the handheld. And while the sequel is certainly less visually attractive than its Playstation 3 predecessor, the real downgrade is to the game's battle scenarios. The impressive size, scope, and variety of each map present in the original game has all but evaporated due to the limitations of the PSP hardware. I'm still enjoying the refreshing strategy gameplay, but it's disappointing in the shadow of the original Valkyria Chronicles. Well, the latest issue of Famitsu Magazine has confirmed that Valkyria Chronicles 3 is indeed a PSP game.

It's certainly nice to dream, but the third installment in the franchise was never going to be a PS3 game. And we were silly for even thinking it might be so. Why? Well, for one, games are a hell of a lot cheaper to make on the PSP versus the PS3. Second, and most importantly, the PSP is a much (much) more successful system in Japan. And since the series sold like crap here in the West, Sega had really no reason to keep it on the PS3. Another factor is that, as seen with Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker and every other hardcore game franchise in Japan, developers are desperately trying to tap in to the success of the co-op driven Monster Hunter gameplay that has been on the rise ever since that series first hit the PSP. Valkyria 2 followed in tow with its ad-hoc co-op mode; and I'm sure it will become an even bigger part of the third game.

It's sad, but we all knew this was coming.

Why is it every time a great game comes around no one gives it the attention it deserves. The first Valkyria Chronicles is still one of the best exclusives for the PS3.

I don't even know what to say to this news...

Well crap, I loved the first game. Bought two copies of it and gifted one to a friend of mine. I do have a PSP (old ass 1000 version) but I'm not really a portable game lover. I'd have liked to see a sequel on PS3 so I could enjoy another round at some point, but I guess with this news that won't happen. Somewhat depressing, but the world moves on.

This is why I will never play VC. I might get hooked on it and want to play more. Then I will remember the next two are on PsP and I not even bother. I knew it would be on PsP anyways. Sega fails at making Sonic games, they also fail at making console games.

This news ruined my day. I'm currently playing through the sequel as well and while I am really enjoying it, too many things about it remind me what it COULD have been, and now it looks like we might never see that potential realized.

    Clearly there is no God.

I guess the important thing to take from this that the game series is still popular enough to warrant future releases and so the possibility of future games still exists.

    But for the moment....shit

This is sad news brad i so wanted a new VC on the ps3 i hate to admit it but that game was one of a few games i own that i stayed up till 5:00 am to finish and after the credits rolled i felt the emotion of each character story vividly in my mind for weeks after. I will hope and pray that if there is a third installment sega will get enough interest and money to put it back on the ps3

Yes, our dreams are crushed once again by Sega. And I just bought VC2 earlier today, thinking that I would support the next sequel on PS3. Sadly, I was a bit disappointed that they would drop the bomb so soon. I guess we'll keep up the support on VC2 and 3, so that the 4th sequel can be the "return to the king."

As much as i'm enjoying VCII (honestly, its the most i've been hopelessly addicted to a handheld game since Animal Crossing DS or Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness) I just can't seem to shake the feeling that so much potential for something with the scope of the original game is just being wasted.

Still though, now I just hope we get the game stateside. While PSP may do well in Japan its the complete fucking polar opposite here. Hopefully VCII doesn't bomb so hard that they don't even deem the 3rd one worthy of bringing to the west.

All the more reason for me not to bother.

The first one was great, but it's just one of those games that I really wished was left alone.

Well, look on the brighter side of things, sequels on the PSP are better than nothing at all. At least we will be able to see them improve on the systems in the past games and retain the great addictive gameplay even if it isn't exactly what we want to see.

God damn it. I'm enjoying VCII on the PSP, but I can't help but think of how much better it would be if it were on the PS3. Oh well, at least they made sequels; back when the first one came out we thought for sure the series was going to die.

Brad, have you read andriasang's full Famitsu translation of their interview with Shinji Motoyama, producer of VC?

    http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2010/09/15/valkyria_3_psp/

The story is headed back to a more serious direction, but it's still a see it to believe it issue for me. However, the interview highlights a lot of points, and it's definitely worth a read.

The new scans look interesting at least, and apparently they're taking out the whole co-op/ad-hoc mode - which is a good sign, as it hopefully means that their aim isn't misplaced, and that they're pouring their attention and resources into the things that actually matter. Although I'm wondering how much they can accomplish with another handheld game... VC2 introduced a lot of great ideas, and the more I play it the more it is starting to capture the quality of the original, but the overall potential for the series just feels like it's being bottlenecked by the PSP's limitations. The series deserves far better than to be relegated to a bloody handheld damnit! damn! double-damn... and a side-order of DAMN!

    Still.... colour me hyped!!
