A week before release, Mercury Steam finally releases a decent trailer that isn't solely comprised of cinematics. It showcases some of the other sub-weapons, powers, and PUZZLES(!!!). Seriously, they had me at puzzles. Consider me a believer now. The demo hits this week, and yeah, it's the same shitty demo I've been bitching about since E3. Nothing will change that, and I'm sure a decent amount of you will hate it too. But watch this trailer.

It's nice to see you getting hyped for this game, Brad.

I personally couldn't care less about Castlevania, but after how long and how strongly you've voiced your "guys that made Jericho" concerns, I'm hyped for your hype and looking forward to your impressions.

to be fair, the trailer felt like 3 or 4 trailers in 1. really though, THIS is the kind of trailer they should of done before. show off some of the story, go into gameplay and puzzles, and just show off the style.

I'm still not sure about this one and I'm not expecting it to be very good. Although the atmosphere and style certainly does feel like Castlevania. The gameplay mechanics though look a little too similar to God of War. I'll have to wait until I can try out the demo before I make a judgment however.

    On a side note.

Ohhhhhh man. What if Konami DID GET A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT on the next Castlevania game...

All contracts and legal crap aside...
IE, Platinum Games for the combat animation and engine, Ninja Theory for story and presentation, and for kicks, the Portal team to design the puzzles... then whoever's good at level design... ooh... Retro Studios would make a great level designer.

Okay, this game very very suddenly looks bad. Ass.

I've been waiting for someone to take from shadow of the colossus for ages, i mean, that's what people liked about that game, if they're not making another one, people can take inspiration from it, and that's what we have here by the looks of things.

    Brilliant.

I kinda like these long trailers it shows exactly what you want to know kinda like Yakuza did.

Anyway im still not sold into this game, GoW showed puzzles too and man i think those sucked they were boring and mindless and this being a total GoW clone i wont expect less, im renting it anyway but im still skeptical about it.

it's worth mentioning that this game has been getting some pretty high reviews. I haven't seen a single review below 8 yet, the majority are 9's.

Glad to see Brad finally get on the LoS bandwagon (but now he's got a new game to bitch about, i.e. DmC)

The trailer didn't really impress me much, it still sounds like your standard God of War clone. I guess this is gonna be the longest "God of War" since most of Krastos' adventures eat up only 8-12 hours each. Even Dante's Inferno was a 6-8 hour game.

I don't know how this trailers makes me feel about the game, it certainly is a nice trailer but there are several things I am reluctant to believe. 20 hours of game play? I doubt that means in the main campaign. Whole areas dedicated to puzzles? I'm sure that means fight a bunch of dudes enter a room with a puzzle, wash, repeat. Fight gigantic monsters called titans? Gut feel says its just a platforming area with moving assets. Upgradeable sub-weapons and techniques? I bet the upgrades are going to be fairly straight forward and the techniques most likely pointless after you learn that one OP move. Though those things are just what I expect from what looks to be a God of War clone. Maybe I will be surprised and there will be upgrade trees for the weapons, perhaps the combat platforming and puzzle solving will actually work together. Maybe the Titans will actually feel like boss fights. But I'm sure those initial thoughts are what most everyone is thinking.

I honestly don't see the problem with the Titans. Everyone and the developers know that they were strongly inspired by Shadow of the Colossus but what's so wrong with that? I think it'll be a lot of fun.

Combat has never been the focal point of a Castlevania game so I could care less about it being a God of War clone when it comes to that. I've never played a game in this series thinking I would have a lot of fun with fighting. I expect great atmosphere, a compelling score and a fun exploration. I know Brad isn't big on the music but I like it quite a bit. The trailer also pointed out multiple ways to go and secrets to find so I'm liking the exploration so far.

As for atmosphere I'll have to wait till I get my hands on it for myself to see if I can get immersed into the games world. So this is shaping up to be a great game in my opinion.

Actually debating picking this and VanQuish up and holding off on New Vegas.

To anyone complaining that the Titans are "rip-offs" of Shadow Of The Colossus, what are your feelings on Enslaved's Ico-esque escort/companion mechanics?

Well, this was something I didn't expect. I was so reminded of this being a Mercury Steam game that I almost completely forgot it has Kojima supervision. Let's see if the standard my brain has of anything Kojima related being immune against blowing is correct.
    Christ, what clumsy sentence.

I'm a 2D Castlevania fan and don't really have any interest in this new 3D one but how much of a turn around this post is is a little shocking. It's probably been a year of Brad playing Scrapland, playing Jericho, then Carlos playing Jericho, Brad talking about Jericho, then playing the Castlevania demo, then talking about the Castlevania demo, then playin the castl...etc.

I understand that opinions can change but to hold such an ardent one for so long and to see it broken by that trailer and not the review embargo that lifted a couple of hours previous is a little fishy. Would that really have sold you if the game was getting 6s and 7s instead of 8s and 9s?

The post comes off more like a dick tuck than genuine hype for the game.

Jericho was good, Castlevania will be awesome (I hope) but Castlevanias quality will in no way be contingent on Jericho. I still can't believe this is a concern.

Hmmm I don't know why but I have this strange feeling the magical mask of revive plot device, or whatever they call it, is actually evil and won't be able to bring Gabriel's Wife back. Just my trope senses tingling maybe.

I'm not to familiar with Castlevania but do gigantic enemies usually appear in the series? The Titans seem out of nowhere. They seem like staple "HEY these are giant enemies for you to fight so youll be a baddasss!"

Alternate bosses are cool but couldn't they have just have stronger versions of normal sized story bosses. Couldn't the game hold its own without giant boss battles.

The games does look good for being an action game. Just wish they showed this stuff rather than what they were putting out earlier.

Finally they show us things that make a castlevania game and show that quite possibly this developer can pull their shit together to make a game for a beloved franchise of mine.

Way to jump ship on us Brad, I'll continue to hate on the game until I see something impressive (which is literally impossible for me). Curious to see what your review and others will be like.

No word on the awesome Super Castlevania IV music playing at the start of the video? It's the music when you're facing Dracula, and by the way, you really need to finish that game. It's freaking awesome, my personal favorite.

But yeah I've been excited for this new one for quite a while. In terms of 3D Castlevania, I'll blindly take this over any of the 3D IGA games. CoD was his best try but it was still corridors and corridors, only with a good summon system and amazing music by Yamane.

In the end, I just really hope Konami isn't retarded and gives IGA enough money to keep making awesome 2D Metroidvanias (a 3DS launch title would make me cry tears of joy).

It really is surprising that they are only just starting to show the other bits of the game, so close to launch. They have done a bad job in showing off the game, but after seeing this I am interested in giving it a try now that I know there is some more to the game.

Maybe it's fair to say that them making Jericho might have actually worked out in the long run for LoS here. They've already scraped the bottom of the barrel, the only way is up.

It still amazes me to see how far the original God Of War was ahead of its time. People are still copying, verbatim, alot of their mechanics. It was original 10 years ago...now its just lame. The character action genre is getting stagnant. What happened to all the gaming genius? Why has gaming gravitated towards the quick buck? What happened to the art form of CREATIVITY?? I imagine a huge white board in these studios with a check list and they just go through the motions like ants towards the all mighty dollar.
You make a god of war clone. It sells like dog shit. The critics hate it. Everyone disrespects you OR
You make an original IP that doesnt have much mass appeal but introduces alot of mechanics to build on. It sells like dog shit. The critics love it. You gain repsect. You make another game in 3 years and its pure gold. It sells great.

Eh, every single puzzle they showed in the trailer looks like a slightly different version of a puzzle I have already done in at least 2 other games.

Especially the mirror-light one... jesus fucking christ. How many games are we going to do that sort of puzzle in?

No, just no. I had no faith that mercurysteam could make a good castlevania, and I have no faith that they can make something that's more than a mediocre brawler either.

This is going to be an "ok" character-action game with shallow derivative puzzles, mediocre platforming, straight-forward half-decent combat. And everything is God Of War style rather than DMC style. Obviously.

I have no interest in that, right now. My cynisism and apathy towards Lords Of Shadow stays intact.

To paraphrase Thomas from the Bible, until I see its puzzles with my own eyes, and feel its combat with my hands, I will not believe.

I am kinda happy that at least someone had taken notes and added a a bit like "Shadow of Colossus", though I don't see anything like a grip meter and the platforming seems really "God of War" like so the all the charm it had in SotC will probably be absent.

I also like the look of Death in that one cutscene for some reason. I think it may be the graphics. It's not polished looking, but it kinda looks old school a bit which I liked. Kinda hard to explain. They also had a nice touch in putting that retro-ish castlevania music at the beginning of the trailer.

This trailer by no means that the game is going to be great. I'm still pretty uninterested by the combat, mostly cause this genre isn't really my cup of tea. Nice to see puzzles, but they aren't anything to get too excited over from what I've seen so far. The Titan fights can be either fun or it can come off more as a scripted sequence.

That said, I'm officially more curious about the game now than before, but still holding judgement until I see the final game.
