I know the Internet is probably abuzz right now with fans of Devil May Cry being split with their feelings about the new reboot announced this morning so I wanted to get my thoughts out there as well as gauge the reaction among our community to the new Dante.  I know Joseph posted the news this morning but I feel there is a lot to be said about this move.  So let's get started...

First of all, you are all wrong. Just kidding, I would never be that forward with my opinions... i'm not Brad. But seriously, you probably are. I have stuck with Devil May Cry since the beginning and have really loved a myriad of things about this IP. The characters are great, the story, while a bit convoluted and childish, is a lot like a summer action flick, the atmosphere is spot on, and the combat mechanics set the bar for every character action game that aspires to be relevant. I even found things to appreciate in that DMC 2 that most people wish never happened. However, with Devil May Cry 4, it became painfully apparent that my interest in the series was fading. The game couldn't keep me invested by rehashing the same formula over and over. In fact my favorite part of Devil May Cry 4 was playing as Nero and seeing Dante from an outsiders perspective. A lot of people would disagree with me but Nero was the one thing that made me realize that the series was in need of something new.

Now, 2 years later, it has been revealed that Devil May Cry is getting a reboot from acclaimed developers, Ninja Theory, the minds that brought us Heavenly Sword and Enslaved: Odyssey to the West (If you haven't seen the trailer, click here). Since the rumors of this transition started, many people, Brad included, have voiced their opposition in fear of losing what they loved about the original DMC. Brad has often voiced his disapproval of having a darker, broodier tone to a game like this and after DMC2, I don't blame him. However, I think the trick lies in striking the perfect balance between darkness/oppression and the over the top, humorous personality of it's predecessors. Is it possible? I don't know but i'm definitely happy that someone is trying.

The newly designed Dante has shed the signature red trench-coat and silver hair in favor of a deceptively strong, skimpy looking character. At first glance, it may not be obvious that this is Dante but as soon as the action begins, the personality of the character that we have grown to love begins to subtly shine through. This is definitely a younger, broodier version of Dante but his punk-brat personality seems to be mostly intact. As someone who cares a great deal about story I pray that this new direction suggests the game will feature a story or premise that I care about this time around because that is honestly the one thing I found to be missing from the previous games. The presentation has always been top notch but the motivations for these characters have never been anything special. With Ninja Theory at the helm two things are certain:

    1. Story will be strong focus and the presentation will be brilliantly executed.
    1. The game will look wonderful.  Ninja Theory's track record for realistic and beautifully flowing games is undeniably impressive.

I think this is a fantastic new direction for DMC to take.  At this point I was certain that I wouldn't care about the series if the next game looked anything like the the last.  I may be in the minority but I feel that DMC is in capable hands.  Now let's just pray that they don't lose their nerve like Sucker Punch did and change the character back after fan boys lay the bitching on thick.

P.S.-  That sword is fucking cool.  I want it.

I know many of you have already made you opinions known as of earlier but if you haven't let me know what you think about the new direction in the comment section!

Some of the things that were in Dante's old appearance, as you said, have been shed(i.e the white hair and trench, are iconic to Dante's image...kind of like Horatio Caine's sunglasses...but like fat max payne, I embrace this new look and am definitely sparked with enthusiasm to play and see this game!

I like the new look of Dante. Seems more grittier and a big change from the pretty boy look that seems to be plaguing video games these days, so I can understand the fanboys dislike of it.

Obviously the original look for Dante has a special place in my heart, that doesn't mean I don't think this is an interesting direction to take. Like you said Nick his personality, the main thing I really liked about Dante, is still there in his punky and younger nature. I never cared too much for story in Devil May Cry, but I do really want to see what actual combat in the game looks like with that sword.

to be fair, the change for cole for infamous 2 wasn't needed, nor did it make sense he would change that much. NOW in this case, this is a prequel with dante as a young man so it make sense he would look like this.

Now I will say I don't mind the look. Honestly I can't help but think Dante now looks like Romona's first evil ex boyfriend from Scott Pilgrim vs the World, just a bit more tough to his facial features.

1.Nick,you can't possibly be certain how ninja theory will handle DMC IP.
Maybe they'll add ludicrous things to the plot with they're ''western touch''.
Maybe Dante will strangely become interested in british style? He already has UK flag on his left hand... Who knows...
2.The game already looks AWFUL in comparison to Devil May Cry 4 who runs on MT Framework 2008.Enslaved graphics aren't the prettiest, dare I say they're quite bad.
Released screens are full of jaggies and low-end textures.So,yeah...
You are confusing artistic design (which for a lot of the games looks awesome) with in-game visuals.

Either way,I wonder if this Devil May Cry: Origins will bomb so that real DMC team could make a proper sequel,or this is it for the franchise.

It's funny to watch the backlash,I'm surprised that so many people even care for DMC even now.neogaff,gametrailers,youtube,etc.Many people are furious about this xD.
Maybe this will take notice like it did with sucker punch and the new Cole.

As soon as I saw the picture of the new Dante in Joseph's post, I instantly thought that Nick would like this.

I can trust Ninja Theory to make the characters interesting. Not sure about how gameplay will be. In the end, I believe atmosphere and characters in DMC shouldn't be what's important, but the gameplay. Let's just hope Ninja Theory can deliver in that aspect.

Your not alone Nick, I think the disheveled and punk look make him a much more interesting character than the more "Eastern" appeal of a flawless looking hero. He just seems so much more believable now and I feel I can take the character more seriously.

Nick, the sword is one of the worst parts of the new trailer. It looks like they wanted to do a Devil bringer but since it's Nero's ability they said "Fuck it, let's make it a sword."

As for the look he looks like a fucking junkie on the streets. I felt like if I saw him out in a city he would try and sell me some crack. It's a terrible character design and has none of Dante's signature traits.

Given this is just a teaser trailer so maybe later they will show more that will impress me later on, but as of right now it seems absolutely horrible.

I couldn't agree with you more, Nick, really.

It may be depicted as a reboot, but, as a few people have already suggested, I think Dante is in purgatory (Limbo City, anyone?), kind of being rehabilitated in a prison. Oh, and some of his hair is white already, maybe part of the main story arch is about him finding that out.

To my mind, that would be very interesting, and wether or not that theory is true, as you said, the game is in really good hands (just played the Enslaved demo, and instantly turned into one of their fans) .

    Greetings from Spain :) .

Also wanted to point out the similarities to Nero in the trailer. The Jacket looks more like Neros and the muzzle falshes are the same color as Nero's in DMC4.

By the way, did they right out say for sure this is Dante? What if it's just some other guy which they rehabilitated into thinking he was Dante? And what's wrong with a transforming sword? Instead of a Dante getting a bunch of different weapons, now his sword can just transform into those different weapons. If that's the case, it's a way to logically explain how Dante switches between weapons so fast during gameplay.

I agree fully with BloodGatts. I mean its just a teaser trailer, for all we know this is a fake Dante. I mean why else would he be asked countless of times "what is your name?" To support my theory the trailer starts to say "subject 6442B" or something like that but that might mean that this is a bio-Dante. And in most cases, the 'bio' version of the an actual character is the total opposite of the original. Dante has white hair and a red on the outside and a black on the outside jacket and a regular sword. While this "Dante" has black hair, red on the inside and black on the outside and has a flexible sword or my favorite kind of sword....the Whip Sword...wow this sword reminds me of the one in Castlevania Aria of Sorrow. Well thats just my theory and I hope that is this is the REAL Dante then they better make it BEFORE Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening that way probably in the end he gains his demonic powers.

Im not against the idea of changing the character look and trying something different but ugh.. that change is really not good, even if the way he fights remains the same his cocky and confident attitude is all shadowed by this new generic character model now it seems that things are way more serious to him, a deeper story is not what i need from a new dmc game a serious character is not what i need either, but the most important thing to me is the combat.

Now the trailer certainly shows some new interesting mechanics that if they are handled well like in DMC4 (Devil Bringer) they could be amazing like that new sword, but thats the thing like you said Ninja Theory are well known for their great gaming presentation, beautiful and impressive graphics but when it comes to gameplay i dont think they will be able to surpass the already known crazy and stylish battles of the devil may cry games the combat in heavenly sword was at least for me boring and not really interesting, even the guns look slower here.
DMC games for me are that, pure combat i dont need a deeper story and deeper character development, but i will wait and see what they have to offer gameplay wise to really give my full opinion about it.

What's with the recent trend of publishers giving their treasured franchises to different studios who plan on making their games focus more on story when they've never been about story in the first place? I play Metroid for the exploration and isolation, and I play DMC for the crazy over the top combat and cutscenes.

DMC is my favorite franchise ever, and this doesn't bother me in the slightest. I mean what are we gonna have.....another DMC with white haired, wise cracking Dante doing the same old shit? True it would be good, but I like the possibility that comes with revamping the series like this. Besides,Dante is so iconic that I doubt we won't see him in his original style again.

Hopefully Ninja Theory puts more effort into the combat than riding Andy Serkis nuts.

He looks like one of the guys from, dare I mention, Twilight. I haven't watched/read them so I won't comment on that any further.

I like junkie charectures, e.g Bad Lieutenant, and I actually really hope he's a addict of some kind, that would be cool.

But, yeah, this was never 'my' franchise, so I can't really comment as a fan, only as an outsider.

Ninja Theories combat has been shallow, but, they usually provide something to look at when you're just hitting the X button. He looks a little like the Twilight lads, and I think that's overused in film, but, I personally haven't seen it in to many games, but then a gain I haven't played ALL the games, nor do I claim to of.

Also Avalor mentions the possibility of this being a Bio-Dante, and I hope that means a doppleganger fight, but I've never really followed this serious so I'm ignorant to wether that is a possibility or not.

In conclusion, cool, but I'm a DMC newbie.

I am not being prejudice here...
Even if this game turns out to be good, they already screw up the formula of DMC.

Whats next? A new Megaman game where you play as an extremely bulky looking guy in a black robot suit covered in chains shooting people's head off and then drinking their blood in order to go into berserk mode and get a flashy red screen covered in blood that allows you to slice open people's stomaches?

Sure DMC was always gothic and a bit dark, but this trailer shows that Dante will now be some kind of Psychopath in Gotham City that just escaped some Arkham Asylum Shit or whatever. WTF is wrong with these guys? Do they eat testosterone for breakfast so they grow bigger balls in order to make such a MANLY game like this?

    ....
I think there's a higher possibility that the new Sonic games will turn out good rather than this game being appreciated by anybody.

    Eh...
Okay. The thing is, it looks cool. But. It doesn't make me think of DMC. At all. If I hadn't been told that it was supposed to be a DMC game, I would have thought it was some new action game IP with a main character that had a personality kind of like Dante. But...no. I really want him to look more like the Dante that we know. He makes me think of Infamous or a game like that. Anything but DMC. The enemies look cool, but I only wish they'd shown more than just that one type. If we were able to do more hand-to-hand, that might be cool. But I want there to be plenty of cool weapons.

I actually do hope that it keeps a level-based system, but also has a hub world for exploration in a way. I am just so worried that the gameplay might bore me. I love DMC because it makes me laugh and because it makes me try to succeed against enemies and rewards me for that. I don't trust this developer to give me this. I don't. Sure. The characters will be great, the game will look great, story great, but...combat. Combat, combat, COMBAT. I want good combat and humor. So I'm worried. However, I do know already that the cutscenes should be awesome and action-packed, just like I like.

But...still. It doesn't make me think of Dante. There is nothing about this redesign that makes me think DMC. So I'm worried. Severely worried. I love the DMC universe. I love the corniness, the combat, and the craziness. It's fun. Sure, this might be fun, but...eh. I just need to see more. That's all. I'm sure it won't be terrible. I just don't know if it will be great.

I totally agree that DMC was in need of a serious facelift, but I don't like this new face. It's purely aesthetic but it turns me off. This Dante looks so thin and sickly and dirty. If he were an extra in another game he'd be a junkie. I have nothing to say about story or gameplay because we don't know shit about that yet, but Dante needs a new look.

HOWEVER, I am glad that Campcom is keeping away from the generic blue eyed, brown haiired hero tpye.

I love when people jump to conclusions based on a CINEMATIC trailer. How about we get some gameplay and learn about the story before we start saying "Dante is a psychopath who escaped the asylum". And while this design of Dante may be meant to appeal to be "fanservice for 16 year old girls who listen to Linkin Park and watch Naruto",you can't deny the original Dante was a prettyboy too. The only other alternative is to make him a Gears Of War-esque burly man and lord knows we don't want that.

Just PLEASE NINJA THEORY,if we're getting teenage Dante then we need teenage Virgil. Explore the origins of their hatred. Maybe start off with them as allies who through some twist of fate turn on eachother.

^^^Just those two. People believe that because "Heavenly Sword" had a shallow, mashy combat system that DMC will suffer the same fate. It's a legit concern. While I'm worried that could be true I won't assume it is and be all "OMG WESTERN DEVS FUCKED UP DMC!!!! NOT ENUF DESUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!" I'd rather wait and actually see some gameplay.

Also, the union jack patch seems fitting. It's a punk rock fashion staple, which seems to be Dante's persona in this game. Dark haired, skinny jeans, emaciated face,smoker....and just listen to the soundtrack. It's not that techno metal we've been accustomed to. It's punk. It's Wild Zero Dante.

I love a healthy helping of Devil May Cry, but what I love even more is when developers try a different take on a fantastic series. The reason to love Devil May Cry is for the style and badassery that Dante seems to exude. The fact that he actually looks somewhat more western is reason alone to love the idea of this game. The original and this new one are going to be very different games and that's what makes both of them fantastic. It's disappointing that people will despise this game regardless of how cool and different it is.

Weren't most of these complaints the same when DMC 4 came out? This is the unfortunate side of new game reveals, the rabble of fanboys. The only legitimate concern I think anyone could have at this point (seeing nothing of the game except for a reveal trailer) is how is this game going to play? While I do believe that Ninja Theory is a more than competent dev team, they just simply don't have the same level of experience working with a game like this than the guys at Capcom. I'm going to reserve any fowl cries about shallow combat until we get some gameplay footage or a control demo but its a little hard not to worry.

Also for the record, I like the new style. As a character design it works, and if what Ninja Theory has said about this being a younger Dante is true than its not a far stretch to imagine the familiar Dante personality coming from this guy. I would like to see how many iterations of the character they did that had the traditional long silver hair and trench coat that got shot down because they didn't fit the direction of the game. I imagine it would be quite a few.

I'll accept him as Dante, but only if they change his hair color to silver by the end of the game. I don't really care too much about the red trench coat, but the silver hair is a must for my image of Dante. Its what made him in my mind.

I'm kinda split on this new look for Dante. If it comes out that this is his Tony Redgrave days, then that's cool and it would make sense for him to hide his identity in some way. If this is a reboot of the series, I simply want Dante to keep his humor. It doesn't have to be like DMC3, where he was was going beyond the bounds of humor or like DMC2 where he was broody all the time, but a good mixture of DMC1 and DMC3 Dante would work in my opinion. No complaints other than the ones I would make as a fan of the series, but I'll keep an open mind to this new direction. The only things I want from this besides the above is a long game (10-15 hrs, 20 might be pushing it) and no changes to the origin (keep Sparda, Eva, and Vergil) unless they can do something creative with it.

I think Infamous 2 did the character change thing poorly. The new design looked like Nathan Drake [Uncharted] in with Faith's [Mirror's Edge] clothes and tattoos. It just didn't seem to fit in with the game, and the new voice was totally jarring. Sure the old one was Batman raspy, but it grew on you. I'm glad they changed his appearance back.

But anyway this new Dante fits. Sure he looks pretty different, but I think it's a good change. I hope they don't change him back, otherwise I'm sure he'll just look like a slightly younger Nero. And we've all been there and done that. But at the end of the day Dante's appearance is pretty superficial. What I think really makes his character is his voice and mannerisms. I hope they nail that part. A new developer is always disconcerting though. I don't think we'll really get a good idea of how he's being handled until we see longer trailers. Anyway I'm psyched and I hope this new game means they'll definitely give us a Devil May Cry HD Collection. I love these HD Collections so much right now. I can't wait for the Ico/Shadow of the Colossus one. And there may even be a Prince of Persia Collection. :D I want to see Sands of Time in HD, especially after playing Forgotten Sands. Lack of Reuben Langdon makes me doubtful to start with, but along with that, they've taken away much of what make's Dante, Dante.
for starters, on the close up of the new Dante, we can see he has cut on his lip and bruises around his eyes. This is not possible, we've known for a long time that Dante's body heals faster than Wolverine can keep up with.
Next is his new sword. There is no excuse for dante not to be wielding Rebellion as his default weapon, it was a gift from his father and it is amongst the few thing Dante actually cherishes. It is a symbol of who he is and he only stopped using it between the time when Vergil gave up Force Edge, and when Sparda was given to Trish.
now, how about his mother's amulet? From where I'm standing, it looks like Ninja theory has just given a big middle finger to the original story.

now, I'm mildly OK with the dyed black hair, but this makes it seem like he's trying to hide his demonic heritage, which would mean he's likey in the stage of his life where he goes by the name Anthony or Tony... "My name is Dante". oh ok, so we're ignoring that too?

Now, for a major fault in the gameplay. Dante is unable to fully control his Devil Trigger until the time when he transforms in Mission 7 of Devil May Cry 3. So what will they do with this, just give us a relaxation period where Dante half tranforms, goes ballistic and then forgets what he was doing? Or will they just go along with all the other Hack 'n' Slash games of these days and give us piss easy boss battles where the game tells to press a button after dodging some attacks?

So many flaws already, and I haven't even complained that they'd decided that he smokes now. He's a pizza and strawberry sundae loving kid who doesn't give a damn about anything. He doesn't need a death stick in his mouth to help him cope with anything, and it actually lowers his cool rating. As does that pathetic remodel of his face, which, to be honest looks like it was based on the Ninja Theory guy at the TGS. Reuben langdon is Dante. This new little prick is not.
