I adore the first Parasite Eve. It was fresh, mature, creepy, cinematic -- and it was an RPG. Perhaps my favorite part was the game's battle system. Viewed from an isometric angle, the semi real-time combat system was both fast paced and strategic. Unfortunately, Parasite Eve 2 was little more than a Resident Evil clone with spells and cybernetic ninjas. It lost most of the atmosphere and cinematic flair of the original. It was disappointing to say the least.

Now we have 3rd Birthday coming on PSP. And while Square Enix no longer owns the Parasite Eve name license, this game continues the story of Aya Brea. This game strays even further from the original formula. And... well, see for yourself.

Can someone please tell me why this game is a shooter? What about the original's combat system wouldn't work today, especially on a PSP? That same system was used and expanded upon in Vagrant Story two years later and was awesome in that game as well. This new gunplay looks boring, mindless, and most importantly -- nothing resembling an RPG.

Perhaps the most frustrating news is Yoshinori Kitase, producer of 3rd Birthday, stated he would like the series to come back to consoles, but it largely depends on the success of this game. Well, I guess that means we have no chance of a sequel, because this game will certainly bomb. Unless your game is called Metal Gear or Final Fantasy, no Japanese developed title has a chance at success in the West. It's sad, but true. And while the PSP is massively popular in Japan, the Japanese audience hardly embraces games with white ladies running around shooting guns. So unless Square Enix decides to change the title of the game to Final Fantasy: Shooting Shit or Monster Hunter: Eve, the series will most likely die with this entry. Depressing, but certainly realistic.

i loved the 1st PE because its story just rolled out to you just perfectly and especially the gameplay wasnt so practical as every other shooter such as: halo, gears of war, and call of duty. i just needed a fuckin break from all of them. but i guess this game got suckered in by all the shooters. plus i would have to agree this games gunplay looks boring as hell.

The first and second Parasite Eve games were among my favorites back in the Playstation era, it saddens me to see it go in this direction. However, if the series future is reduced to being a shooter I'm not sure I want sequel after this anyway.

Even if it sells, it will probably mean more action/shooter-y P.E.'s. If that's not your bag, one might as well consider the series not necessarily dead, but in a coma with severe, irreversible brain-damage. Even if it wakes up, she'll never be the same.

That said, I'll probably pick this up if I'm not swamped with other things to play.

I loved the first Parasite Eve but never played the second because I heard how much they butchered the battle system. When I saw the gameplay for The 3rd Birthday I lost all hope in the series. I just wish developers realized they don't have to change all the game mechanics every time they put out a game in a franchise.

Because as you said, Westerner's don't buy Japanesey things but Americans specifically buy Shooters. Halos and Gears and Unreal and CoD and CoDMW2 and Halo ODST etc They want to sell it in the west and have taken the steps the do so.

I suppose with the lisence gone, they just ditched the horror aspect entirely and went straight up Space Marine on our asses - minus the space, but with the evil space bugs FROM THE FUTURE.

This game looked awful 3 years ago when all there was to it was a 10 second vid with Aya in a wedding dress and concept art of her with a gun in her mouth and a look on her face that said "mmm, I so moist. But to be fair, a continuation of the series on consoles is not ever going to happen. Kitase was most likely referring to releasing the old games on the PSN.

This game will be below average and needlessly wordy with talk about understanding emotions. I will ignore it and wait for my sequel to Threads of Fate and Vagrant Story

God I can see it now. A return to the old style on PS3.

They would show the first gameplay trailer and you would see Aya running around dodging enemies and their attacks. Then, all of a sudden, the action would pause and a huge dome would appear out from Aya revealing her weapon range. She would select a three shot rifle. Two shots to the first spider creature, and one shot for the giant snake. Boom, boom -- boom. Battle would fade to a exp, bps results screen. OMG, the crowds would go insane.

Well, at least in my dreams they would. :(

I never really got into Parasite Eve or Vagrant Story. If they put them on the PSN, I'd gladly pick them up. Unfortunately, Squeenix doesn't seem to realize that all their games sell like hotcakes when they put them up in North America.

But Brad! It still is an RPG because you play the role as Aya Brea and you have different weapons!

This is a pretty steep fall from PE's roots. I will still pick it up and try it out but I won't keep my hopes high. The only thing I hope comes from this release is that they release PE1 & maybe 2 to the PSN. I'd love to have the original to play on my PSP. :)

I am playing through the 1st Parasite Eve right now and wow this certainly kills my expectations for anything new coming out of Parasite Eve.

There's no strategy in this and from what I've played of the first one so far it's a lot about strategy. I am stuck at the boss on top of the hospital though, it's really making me mad.
