The Gta series. The settings change but really it is just a nobody making his way to the top of the pecking order. They start out differently: e.g. Niko starts out as an outcast and Carl has come back to his old stomping ground. These games and their random encounters are as fun as hell but without a new kinda setup they are going to be stuck in a rut that will be hard to get out of.

Oh snap. I could put Mass Effect on this, but that's kind of a stretch since I love both games.
But it's an ambitious series so...seems like they could always reach higher.

Elder Scrolls, in particular it's dialogue system. I wish it would be more like Bioware games.
