Back in the 80s, a struggling Japanese company called Square made one last effort to become a successful video game developer. Presumed to be the last project they would ever work on, the game was called Final Fantasy. And the director was Hironobu Sakaguchi. Over 20 years later Sakaguchi's current studio, Mistwalker, is most likely in a similar situation, and The Last Story seems to be their last chance, much like Final Fantasy. But will this game do for Mistwalker, what Final Fantasy did for Square? Probably not -- but here is gameplay footage anyway!
A cover-based Japanese action-RPG? Sneaking up and getting the jump on enemies? Well this certainly looks pretty refreshing. I was worried this game was going to be a much more traditional RPG like Sakaguchi's previous games, Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey. But I get vibes of Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy 12, and Demon's Souls. Consider me officially stoked.
Also, is this supposed to be an online co-op RPG? I only see the player controlling one party member, yet there are quite a few character life bars on the screen. Are these being controlled by other players? I wouldn't be surprised given the popularity of Monster Hunter in Japan, but a prominent online component would be a first for a very story driven game. I will assume The Last Story is in fact heavy on story. I mean, it is in the title.
My only concern (outside of the haircuts), is that Mistwalker's potential "Last" game is on the Wii. While the Wii is certainly successful at selling certain first-party software titles, has there ever been an RPG on the system that has even sold remotely well? Well, there is a first time for everything I suppose.

Looks amazing, however being on the Wii, controls is a problem that pops out.
Assuming it lacks the use of the classic controller, I worry about camera control. But you never know until the game is released.

Well, I have no idea about sales, but two RPGs I definitely want to play on the Wii are Xenoblade (saw a lot of it in Japan) and Arc Rise Fantasia (come to think of it, I didn't see this anywhere while I was in Japan... even if it's old...), so I wouldn't completely dismiss the Wii having a good RPG... maybe. >_<

yea i dont see this doing very well, maybe if it was on ps3 or 360, but with the wii its hard to make a very good game expecliy a jrpg so i dont know we will have to see

I am super stoked about this as well. This game looks like what White Knight Chronicles should have been. Fast, fun, and deeply rooted in real time action, not that crap that slow boring repetitive crap that came out a few months ago.
The party system and use of the environment are something every RPG should use, and I'm glad to see it here
too bad i don't own a Wii-__-

Wow I had heard of this but nothing of its gameplay. This actually looks cool.

I'm going to echo the sentiments that it is too bad this is Wii exclusive, since it is unlikely I will be able play it.

I can't wait to be sneaking up on dudes in an action-RPG fashion.

Looks cool, but fuck am I ever behind on my games. I can't even think about considering picking up an RPG that isn't Yakuza 4.

Hmmm...this whole entire concept is an interesting one! i feel this game would do much better on the 360 and PS3 than the wii though...It's rare to ever hear about a hardcore Wii gamer

Oh cool. It looks like you need to rely on cover and tools to beat your enemies, rather than just a generic hack-n-slash RPG.
As to the Wii doubters: Do you think this game would do any better on the XBox360/PS3 simply because of the stigma held against the Wii? The Wii has a wider audience, with lower production costs. A game that will most likely fly under the radar would almost undoubtedly return more profit, if any, on the Wii. Makes me wonder if a game like Nier would've fared just as well, or better, on the Wii.
