So I want to know your opinion. Larry Hryb. Chatch or not?

If you own an xbox then maybe you know him by his Gamertag Major Nelson. As the face of Xbox Live, I still can't understand why he is Microsoft's choice. Brad has pointed out he's old, much older than the target generation. Is that because he comes off all less threatening? I mean he's a family man right? He's got kids. Is that who the general xbox population can relate to? I'm still puzzling over that one.

In addition, I don't get the vibe that he truly is a fan of games. Sure his GamerScore would say otherwise. I just feel it comes off more as just a side effect of working for Microsoft. I don't want to say I doubt his knowledge and get into a pissing contest. But I'll say he comes off as kinda scripted and not genuine.

But think, is there a better replacement? Would I want Jessica Chobot doing his job? Fuck no. I don't think getting some other attractive female off the street would be a good idea. I also don't think getting a super fan that knows every detail about every game, would be a great choice. A spokesperson has to have personality and likability.

At the end of the day, he's the guy behind it Xbox Live Promotions. Every time I turn on my Xbox and see some video about Summer of Arcade, it's him narrating it giving me the 411 and I don't like it. Maybe it's because he comes off as a Microsoft Stooge. Maybe it's because he's a geezer. Maybe I fear my own mortality or loss of youth. Maybe it's because he works for Microsoft and doesn't have to pay a damn thing for all the games he's been playing. Or maybe it's the fact that even though he's just a marketing PR guy and  has almost little to nothing to do with the actual games industry, he is still more recognizable than some of the bigger, more important names.

Who knows,
David

David i can understand why Microsoft uses major nelson as a spokesperson because its to signify that hes a kid at heart to the general populace now whether that really true has yet to be answered but most of the time he gets alot of publicity announcing new stuff for xbox live and or deals in the work for less known media or blogs like 4pp. I don't feel like he moves attention away from the developers and game designers but i don't like when people talk about his connection to the fans which i find superficial and a weak argument to describe a man who is a glorified pr guy for Microsoft

He's a marketing man. Nothing more. Seeing him in his $1000 suit at the Kinect reveal event should have told you everything you need to know.

He's just a guy doing his job. He loves his job and gets to use his job to probably benefit his kids. It's kind of a dream for all people. Then again it's a job. so he's not exactly a jerk more than he's just doing his job. With that it entails he has to do what the company says in stead of what he wants to do. So maybe people don't like the strings attached to him. We can't understand the real man unless we talked to him. It's kind of like a sports star. Derek Jeter seems like a jerk because he sells himself to Ford and just gives off that vibe as well. We won't know unless we actually meet him. (no his various affairs with women don't count as proof of his bs)

He kinda reminds me of my uncle. My uncle is a major gamer around the same age who plays games and has 3 kids and a wife. But its not like he is the only one doing stuff on X box live normally i ignore promotions and junk but when i click on them i usually get a girl or i go on youtube and get rooster teeth.

It's funny if you actually look on his list of played games, there's game he has popped in for a second and then taken out immediately, seemingly to just add it to his large list of played games.

He Comes off as a tool, and many people find that annoying about Major Nelson. I see your point David he could be a chach at times, but I think he has the right amount of chach to be a MS spokesperson. Anyone else, and I can see them chaching it up big time!

I think Major Nelson is missing an important confidence or aggressiveness when he talks about games. It feels like he's listing off info about a game instead of him trying to sell the game to people.

Larry Hryb like plenty of other folks have been saying is just a guy doing his job (his multi thousand dollar job) but in a sense I kinda see him as microsofts own Kevin Butler just not as funny or as well known. Even though he's probably not the best choice I would prefer Larry do the job instead of some 20ish year old dumbass like I see everwhere now en days, who would come off as trying to hard and appear like a phony just reading lines(but thats what a lot people say Larry is). If I was payed his salary I would most likely appear the same way or however the boss would want me to appear.
But to me I would like see someone else give it shot so I don't think he's a catch.

He's kind of like Peter Moleyneux; everytime I see him, I want to punch him in the face, although I'm not sure why.

He's a face, thats all he is. He gets paid to act like he cares about games and knows a crap load of stuff about them too, without Microsoft he'd just be another out-of-his-prime dad. Microsoft has a new Xbox, its time for a different kind of face lift.

I swear if the new Xbox live guy/ girl has anything to do with Skittles, I'll hunt down that virtual tiger and poach it.

They need to get a Kevin Butler for Microsoft. And by the way, is Kevin just facade to appeal gamers of our generation?

Hes cool. He definitely plays games. He even has a PS3 and tweets and mentions PS3 games he's playing. He talks about his iPhone and stuff to so its cool to see that hes not a MS whore. I don't know that he would play games as much if he didn't work for MS but that's not saying much, anyone would play more games if they worked in the industry.

My issue with him is that it's his job to sell us games. He's not paid to have integrity, just to say "this game is good and you should buy it". So yeah, chatch.

He's okay, but Kevin Butler from Sony beats his ass tenfold.
