My most anticipated moment of this year's convention has arrived.  I just left the Konami Press conference with a big grin on my face.  Konami has just confirmed that Vatra Games, a studio the Czech Republic, is the development studio behind the next entry in the Silent Hill series.

Simply titled "Silent Hill" (for now atleast), the new game looks like a true entry in the series with some heavy atmosphere and cryptic storytelling.  I was so concerned that the game would deviate too far from what Silent Hill is and instead enter into another genre that the game doesn't belong in.  For awhile, rumors were flying around the game was  a FPS.  Luckily, this is not the case and instead, we have what looks to be a true Silent Hill title with emphasis on exploration and storytelling.

While official plot details are scarce, it does seem that the protagonist will be an escaped convict who finds himself trapped in the hell of Silent Hill.  The game showed brief glimpses of third person exploration but left the combat completely untouched.  While Vatra games did reveal that their approach to combat would be closer to that of Silent Hill Shattered Memories, they weren't exactly forthcoming with the details.

Overall, I am pleased with the direction the game is going and aside from a few visual annoyances, I think the game looks promising.  Of course, the actual gameplay wasn't discussed much and all we have to go on right now is this trailer.  However, I am more excited than ever to jump back into the world of one of my favorite gaming IP's in history.

UPDATE** In all of my excitement I almost forgot to mention one of the most interesting pieces of news.  As you all should know, famed Silent Hill music composer, Akira Yamaoka left Konami recently to pursue other endeavors.  This was easily one of my greatest concerns when I heard that the series would continue.  Yamaoka's music was one of the most prominent aspects of the series and I was terrified of continuing on without him.  Konami has chosen to replace him with Rolfe Kent, the composer for one of my favorite television series, Dexter.  I will hold my judgements until I hear his score in union with the gameplay but my first instinct is to say that it is a great fit.  Any thoughts?

The game does look really Interesting and extremely atmospheric but I'm also worried that it could turn into a copy of Homecoming which in all honesty was never in touch with the Silent Hill series.. It just didn't feel right and when I see something like this I start to sweat but as well as becoming a big flop it may also become the next big installment to the Silent Hill series which has done so well for itself.

As long as Pyramid Head isn't being shoehorned in, I will look forward to it.

I think there is some concerns worth worrying about.

While the new music composer worked on films such as Children of the Corn and t.v shows like Dexter, the music in the trailer kind of felt out of place as compared to the atmospheric tones of akira yamoaka.

Also, members of Vatra have worked on the following : Amped 3, State of Emergency, JERICHO, Hidden and Dangerous, Vietcong 2, and House of The Dead: Overkill . Those games don't really have the best track record, so i'm kind of worried to see how all of these members can come together and work on a new Silent Hill and keep the atmosphere and story, without creating a mess.

I'm so excited. honestly, I'm glad it's returning to it's roots :3 the music sounds amazing as well, I'm glad that it still kept the same type of tone. can't WAIT to hear more of this! I'm so giddy!

I just hope they stick to the originals and don't try to 'do their own thing' or something. The music did seem a little odd compared to Yamaoka's stuff, but I'll judge it when i comes out... Next year.

Oh god, this trailer looks awesome to me. The visuals may not be stunning but the atmosphere is still there. Dexter is also one of my favourite show and I really think this Rolfe Kent will do something great for Silent Hill.

Wow,its so good to know were getting the Silent hill we know and love back. But theres one thing concerning me...at the part where that guy opens the drawer and
walks away, look at the tv.Alex with a beard from SH5 appears on the screen.Could this mean that this new Silent Hill, can be another SH title trying to differ from its roots?

    The trailer for this brings up a number of interests and concerns for me;

I like the general atmospheric effects they seem to be using, the new team has shown a willingness to try out a number of settings (rainy and/or foggy etc) rather than locking the environment in one state or another.
The inclusion of the (for me) much hated RealTime transition to OtherWorld bugs the hell out of me as I just hate the cheese factor of it. After the bizzare and wonderfully logic defying moments of the earlier games. I mean, who doesn't recall that tense, grating feeling as they went under the clocktower in SH1. Sirens wailing, feet clanging on an oddly metallic floor as you scrambled down a deserted underground bunker and up a rusty ladder into what at first seemed to be the exact same place you had just left but... wrong. Wrong in a way you couldn't really understand until you began to explore.

The use of a readily definable character archetype is disappointing also, as it comes with a preset personality limit; he is either a 'good man' who did a 'bad thing', a 'good man' who was in some way falsely convinced , or a 'bad man' seeking to escape his crime. As such the conclusion to his tale becomes at least somewhat predictable from the get-go.
It always disappoints me to see so many of the new studios failing to understand why SH's traditional use of the everyman (or woman) had such a profound impact on the user in terms of not just accessibility, but also in keeping the possibilities of why things were happening and how they would come to be resolved open right till the end.

Musical direction should be interesting, since Kent is very very good at creating strong, raw emotional soundscapes. But how he'll stack up against his predecessor's use of everyday sound to invoke something alien and unidentifiably malevolent... well time will tell.

I am very excited about this. Buttttt, I paused the trailer in spots where it quickly flashed "monsters" attacking and such, and they just didn't look anything like Silent Hill monsters. They just looked like tall, skinny humans with a scary face and black hair? I hope these aren't the only monsters in the game :[
