Nick and I had a conversation about a certain developer recently. A sequel to a successful series that they created had been passed on to another developer. This initially surprised and frustrated me, but then I realized this opportunity might free up some time for them to work on one of their older franchises. The problem is that this developer has been typecasted into making a certain type of "fucked up" game. And while they execute on this type of game very well, they also excelled at creating games with completely different tones. While I mentioned them to him in passing, I wanted Nick to see some of this studio's earlier game-ography, so I posted some clips and trailers below.

No One Lives Forever 2 (2002)

Shogo: Mobile Armor Division (1998)

No Ones Lives Forever (2000)

Tron 2.0
(2003)

Yes Monolith is good at making dark and fucked up games. In fact their first game Blood was very much a Doom clone they lived up to its namesake. But the point of this post is to show you that Monolith has the chops to work on other games besides F.E.A.R. and Condemned. Personally I would love for them to return to No Ones Lives Forever, as Kate Archer is a great character and the first game (never played the second) is actually really funny.

Brad

P.S. Monolith is also great at creative amazingly cinematic sequences. This bike sequence rivals the Eva bike sequences in Metal Gear Solid 3 and 4:

Damn, I remember seeing the "No One Lives Forever 2" cover on the shelf of a game store years ago and kinda over looked it. Now I've kinda missed out on an awesome looking game. It looks like a FPS version of Just Cause 2, except with better voice acting, though I had a feeling the voices were kinda bad on purpose in Just Cause 2.

I'm going to have to agree with you now, I'd rather Monolith make a No One Lives Forever 3. I'd totally play that game.

I had no idea Monolith made Shogo... I bought it at a grocery store for 50 cents and it's still installed on my computer.

Thank you Brad. However, I would definitely not mind seeing them return to NOLF. All i'm saying is that Condemned is special to me and I hope that the series doesn't die after Condemned 2. With that said, i'm sure you feel the same way about NOLF. I'll be happy if either NOLF3 or Condemned 3 is announced.

But to be fair, I would also be happy with a totally new IP.

I remember buying Shogo in a $10 double-pack with Septerra Core at Best Buy. Both fantastic games, and I was surprised that I had bought a game as great as Shogo for $5. I had no idea the same people made all of these games, most of which I played and loved.

I didn't really get into No One Lives Forever, as the stealthy gameplay elements frustrated the 7 and 9 year old Darknezz. I watched my dad play them, though, and that was always entertaining because of the cool stuff that happens. Talking about it makes me want to go find the old discs...

I didn't play Tron 2.0 until 2009, but I really enjoyed it start to finish.

Nick, if you can find those games anywhere, I really suggest playing them. They're worth the time. In fact, I'm gonna go look for my discs right now.

Shogo was the first computer based FPS I played at the tender age of 8. I have been waiting for a sequel now for 12 years. That Shogo 2 t-shirt that one guy was wearing in F.E.A.R 2 is the only sliver of hope I have that says I may soon see Shogo 2.

Wow, Seems like a bunch of people got the Shogo/Septera Core double pack. One of the best gaming deals ever.

    AvP2.

Story was good and immersive. MP was balanced for all species.
Learning curve was right. Fun as hell in a skilled server. Graphics
were pretty cutting edge at the time.

They are the only developer that actually did that franchise right.

    Game is a classic.

Shame it released around the time CS became king.

Hopefully they get that back in their hands.

One of the few times a different developer eclipses the original devs so
there is hope for the upcoming game.

Wow, I'm going to have to see if I can get my hands on No One Lives Forever 2. I had actually never heard of the game before but it looks hilariously awesome.

I keep saying that a NOLF game with the Team Fortress 2 art style/engine would be visually great. Just seems like a perfect fit to me.
