I'm going to remain skeptical until I play it.

Gameplay wise, it's obvious why any Metroid fan might be skeptical.

But the other thing stopping me from getting excited is the emphasis they're placing on story. Fighting along side other characters. Voice acting. It's just weird. I have no problem with trying to tell a better story in a Metroid game...but there's things like Samus fighting along side other characters, and adding new characters like that black guy that I just don't care for.

Also, the game looks like a cartoon. Metroid Prime nailed what this series should look like.

Oh shit... This game looks just as amazing as I was hoping it would be... I like the fact that you're playing the game, moving and fighting the way Samus would in such a scenario

I honestly don't know what to think. It LOOKS like it might work, but tbh from the gameplay footage the first person mode doesn't seem it like it's needed.

The controls look fine so far. But, switching from 3rd person to 1st looks like it could get annoying very quickly. I might buy a Wii for this game.

The 2d-3d metroidvania style is exactly the direction this game should be heading (even though the FPS did work). The Graphics are looking top notch and I cant wait to see what different environments we are put into.
I have to say, my biggest fear is the control scheme. I cant see any thing good with using the wiimote like that although I am sure it will be at the very least adequate by the time its released.

Not having Samus in isolation for the duration of the story (well, aside from the usual enemies and bosses and whatnot) is one thing that'll make me feel strange when I play this game, because I've come to expect isolation with Metroid games. Yes, there were a few interactions with NPCs in the Prime games and I have to say the abundance of NPCs in Metroid Prime 3 made it less eerie, but you still spent most of your time as Samus by herself, nice and mute.

I'm hoping that the story doesn't give this game a full linear no-return aspect. One thing I love about Metroid is going back to all these early areas in the game all super powered up and finding 47 million smaller missile, bomb, and health upgrades that were hidden the entire time. That's one thing that defines games like Metroid and Zelda. You're still free to explore the world as you wish once you have the utilities to make each part accessible (it's also why I have an alternate save file in Super Metroid before Tourian, since you can't go back after that without glitching :P). But yeah, it'd be terrible if they took something like that out. Hopefully they remembered that this is Metroid they're making.

Lastly, of course, I have to hate on the sideways Wiimote controls. The only thing I can see myself playing like that is an NES game, which brings it down to its most basic control scheme. God knows I only killed myself by accidentally spinning a million times in New Super Mario Bros. Wii because of the controls, which was tolerable after finding a sitting position where I wouldn't jerk the controller forward while button mashing. Anyways, I think it'd be more reasonable to at least have a classic controller or Nunchuk control scheme, but I'll just have to wait until further news on that I suppose. It'd also be awesome if it had a Shadow Complex sort of feel when shooting people in the background, but again, the video doesn't look too promising with what looks like auto-aim.

The game looks pretty, but I gotta gripe about the control scheme until something new comes up.

Ok, where to start... The graphics are impressive, for a Wii game. It looks to be going back to it's sidescrolling roots while keeping it 3D, which was brilliant with Shadow Complex, and I think it will work well with this game.

Still, we will have to wait and see if their 2/3D gamble pays off.

i don't know... this game looks like it doesn't really know, what it wants to be. i mean, the metroid series is out there, for nearly 10 year and prime already reinvented the franchise.
but other m looks like it wants to combine both, the old and the new metroid games, into one. so, it is a kind of an experiment. i guess, we'll have to wait for the outcome.

the 3d metroid look is consistent with prime. i don't understand where "The Other M looks like a cartoon" is coming from, other than it having 3rd person elements.

a problem i can see is how the controls might switch from 1st to 3rd person by accident. it seems like it switches to 1st person when it senses that the reticule is sensed to be on the screen, but if i accidentally aim a little to far off the screen, it'll switch me back into 3rd person mode.

Looks like exploring might be a little confusing at first. I wish they would of done a 2.5D game like Shadow complex and not a 2.75D game as it looks like they had to make the aiming mostly automatic.

I started off the metroid series with Prime 1 so seeing the first person gameplay this has just feels tact on compared to the prime series. When I watch the trailer, it feels like the team just kept fighting over what they wanted this to be, 2d, 3d, first person, and they just decided to do everything instead of nailing just 1 thing. The first person view itself seems like its used for combat and puzzles like in prime but from the trailer made the first person viewpoint feel like a gimick, not part of the game or the part of Samus's way of battle.

Now the 3rd person stuff doesn't look to bad graphically and artistically but it feels like its ninja gaiden but with a gun instead of a sword. Now i'm hoping this is like metroid prime 1's space station opening level, a linear experience that shows you what the game is like and just overall makes a good intro level.

Also, the first person view part where it zooms in to that thing made me thing the first person viewpoint has kind of a permanent scan/hint system. Sort of like if you can't figure out what to do, go into first person and Samus will look at the spot you need to go.

I'm assuming the video posted is the gameplay trailer you mentioned the other night. (I can't view it since I'm on my phone) I'm not totally clear on Team Ninja's involvement in the game as far as if they're only doing the art and story or are developing the gameplay as well. If the latter is true then the video makes me worry that the game will have a Ninja Gaiden feel instead of the classic Metroid experience.

I have a feeling that the game will be somewhat linear and will have a very automated feel to it as far as shooting goes. The first person view looks like it will be a throwaway feature, only being useful when the game ultimately forces you to use it. I think the game's boss fights are probably going to be the most emphasized part of it. Rather than being about this character isolated in a foreign and unfamiliar world you're probably going to be killing swarms of enemies, doing a few button/key "puzzles" and then fed a giant enemy to take down.

I've never played the original Metroid games on SNES but after playing games with similar structure to them (Darksiders, Batman:Arkham Asylum, Shadow Complex) I have an appreciation of its style and history. I don't think that this new game will follow that blueprint and it will probably be worse off because of that.

Well, visually it looks nice. However, I can tell just from the video that the camera is going to get annoying at some parts. Also, how does the targeting in this game work? Do you just point Samus in a direction and hope she shoots what youre aiming at? And is the first person view really necessary?

Oh well, guess I'll have to wait to find out.

Pretty much what I expected, though five times faster. I think the Japanese version of this trailer is a little more interesting, however. The over the shoulder camera and the grab counter system get some screentime so I'm wondering how that will control.

Also, David can no longer be trusted.

    Hmm.. Interesting
Since we are focusing mainly on gameplay I won't delve into my feelings on whether Samus should or should not talk nor where I think the story could go.

I wholeheartedly dislike how this game could not decide if It wanted to be a 2D side-scroller or a 3D shooter, thus resulting in some odd inbred of the two. Although that weird mix could add some intriguing puzzles it will also result frustrations as to what is in the background/foreground. Now to address the shooting, the first person view looks a pain to deal with as it looks rather clunky to switch from holding the Wiimote sideways to pointing it at the TV as far as this trailer shows it seems to be auto aiming to enemies when in the 2D perspective once again attempting to attract the more casual audience to play a metroid style game, I am tired of developers dumbing down their games to try to get grandma involved in the fun (FYI granny just wants to nap). The trailer shows little to no exploration just running down a catwalk rapid firing at any thing that gets in Samus' way, but then again how do you show exploration in a trailer? Here is to hoping Other M remains true to the METRIODvainia style of game.

One more issue that I have to rip on is holding the Wiimote sideways. Why not just use the classic controller? The Wii's controller just feels plain out awkward in your hands when held sideways.

A big focal point of the trailer is the boss battles and to be frank they look cliché with finishing moves and forcing the first person view onto you.

well it looks like a run and kick ass kinda game...like god of war or darksiders with that Metroid twist.... which makes them games awesome. that each one has their own special twist. an this one is no different. i got a bad vibe about the first person view though. i feel that it might be easily forgotten at important times and that might cause a spring of frustration. but on the other hand it looks easy to use might come in handy in fights and to get the jump on your enemy's. so i think the first person part might be a make it or break it for this game. all together I'd say this game will not be disappointing. 8 / 10...from the trailer of course.

This one seems like an oddball to previous 2d and 3d Metroid games. It presents a different feel coming from the Prime trilogy. That said, I'm not sure I like the art style so much. In my opinion the colors seem a bit harsh and what's this? Samus suddenly has a mole? Besides the graphics, I really want to know how the game play is going to feel switching from 3rd person to 1st. I believe someone already suggested that it seems unnecessary. If this is really going to focus more on action than the previous games, I believe I won't like it all that much. I'll cross my fingers though.

To me this game looks like it was specifically made to be a 1st person, 3d game like the prime trilogy, and then someone thought of making it like the older metroid games, and so they added the sidescrolling, 2.5d gameplay to it. Although this may not be what actually happened with this game, that's what it seems like to me.

Obviously they lure people into liking this by just adding the 2d aspect
however, the 3d portions looks awkward
unless if there's interactive puzzles like to the side or something
it's pointless when you can just shoot enemies in 2d

This Metroid will proabably be more action and reflex based than any other Metroid before. The emphasis will be put on fighting the creatures in the world and the story/narrative. From this gameplay exploration is limited to getting to the next area, it would be a shame if Team Ninja decided to limit the amount of items or upgrades in the world.

The game looks great to me. Though the third-person gameplay would be something a little different. The gameplay throughout the trailer looks extremely fast paced. Hope the game will have a very long lasting story. From the looks of the trailer the change of perspective to first-person looks smooth and fast. I see many say there won't be the feel of isolation in this Metroid since you be traveling with a group, but from the trailer it looks like Samus will be still pretty isolated with the feel of loneliness. Also great to hear the original theme at the end of the trailer.

The game looks good, Wii game or not. The gameplay also seems fun even though it could get out of hand at some points. I did notice that Samus was older then in the teaser and based on the gameplay they dont seem to focus on blending the story a gamplay that much, this is a trailer though. This is just to get people excited for the game and that's what it did. Even though Metroid fans can complain about Samus having a voice, I think it can work. The only problem in the trailer is the 3rd person to 1st person view. This is a good idea and it can work, the problem is the sensor catching the switch and aming. Playing the Conduit, once the controller is aming off the sensor the controls get messed up and that wouldn't be fun in a intense battle. Watching the trailer it seems like it's going to be a short game.

From that gameplay video it still looked like exploration was a major gameplay element, which is definately a good thing. I don't care about the combat honestly as long as it doesn't completely suck, at the very least it looks simple so it won't get in the way.

However I am very worried about the aforementioned control scheme, after all the reason why analogue sticks were made were so that people could easily navigate through a 3D space (p.s. I'm sure thats not true) and a d-pad seems a bit unweildy.

Hopefully the game will maintain the sense of isolation that all the other games had.

First off, Metroid Prime is probably my favorite game of all time. With that said, there are a bunch of things I could point out but only ONE thing really, really worries and bothers me. The map. It looks like the map shows rooms from the top down, which is the norm for pretty much every game EXCEPT METROID. The 2D metroids use a side scrolling map because of the way the world is designed, and in Metroid Prime the 3D map effectively translated a Super Metroid-style world into 3 dimensions. I feel like the top-down style map means there is a lot less focus on verticality, which might be a key aspect of the exploration in metroid. I much prefer a stacked-lego style world over a web of rooms across a single plane.

Team Ninja has made sure to include fanservice I notice. I prefer the sideays control but with the way it seems to be 2.5d but maybe 2.7 when campared to how shadow complex used it.....back to my point that choice seems like it would be better for control. I still feel like their may be something in the storyline *especially scenes with short haired samus which seems to be the space federation parts* that makes me feel dispointed in how Ninja pulls it off.

I do like the fact that there doesn't appear to be any waggle controls or anything. Do you use the nunchuk for anything? I can't imagine Metroid working with just the Wiimote on its own. As I've learned from Cave Story and Mega Man 10, using the A and B buttons while using the Wiimote sideways is very awkward.
