When I came up with the idea for the recently recorded Top 5 Video Game Sidequests, I had originally planned to include mini-games into the mix. Well, since most of use didn't put any minigames on our lists, I thought I'd share mine with you on the blog. So here are my Top 5 minigames in well... videogames.

Brad says

5. Chihuahua Races in God Hand - You bet on cleverly named colorful Chihuahuas. What more can you ask for?

4. Battle Arena in Xenogears - Love giant robots, but hate turn based battles? Well Xenogears had you covered in with the Battle Arena minigame. The sheer amount of Gears and enemy robots you got to use in this fighting game made it a blast to play. Every robot fought differently and it was fucking awesome -- well, back then at least.

3. Triple Triad in Final Fantasy 8 - So simple, but so addictive. To this day, I can't recall anything about Final Fantasy 8 I enjoyed more than this. Now watch Vensito fail at playing it.

2. Battle Runner in Ehrgeiz - While Ehrgeiz is most know for being a fighting game staring characters from Final Fantasy 7, I know as the awesome mini-game collection with a fighting game on the side. Battle Runner is far from the only awesome part of this game, and honestly, I probably could have put Battle Panel on this list too; but Battle Runner was responsible for so many wasted hours back in college. And Tifa is still cheap as fuck, Pally.

1. Spheda in Dark Cloud 2 - SO SO SO SO FUCKING AWESOME! This video won't do this minigame justice, so you just have to trust me. This is the greatest golf(like) game ever made - PERIOD. I might bust out my copy of Dark Cloud 2 this week just to show you what I mean.

Care to share some of yours?

Brad

Reading the list, I got worried when I didn't see Spheda on the list. I was pleasantly surprised.

Gotta say, all pretty good picks. I'm terrible at making Top 5 lists, so I'm not gonna try.

I didn't play Dark Cloud 2 because at the time I couldn't get into rpgs (unfortunately.) I did love Spheda though. I'd always do it for my brother cause he hated it.

Now I need to find a way to pick up DC2 so I can play it for once. D:

You could of just filled the list with Dark Cloud 2 mini-games.

There's fishing, fish racing, fish breeding, picture taking, city building, of course Spheda. Dark Cloud 2 could just as well be the best PS2 game of all time...

    ...Oh wait, it is.

I think my favourite minigames were probably FFVII gold saucer minigames such as the roller coaster and the battle sqaure and especially the chocobo racing , spending hours training for the gold chocobo!
While I see you perhaps dislike Mario Party DS, I have to admit that Mario Party 5 for gamecube was great IMO. Just loved playing mario party with my mate and eager to land on bowsers minigames!!!!

I really liked the way The Warriors (PS2/Xbox) used quick little minigames for stuff like mugging and tagging. Not that the minigames were really fun, but it still way more fun than button-mashing and QTE's you'd expect to see nowadays.

I don't know if it counts, as a minigame (maybe rather an alternate game mode) but the absolute best I can think of is City Trial in Kirby Airride (GC). You and up to three opponents race around an open map, searching for better vehicles and stat-boosting power-ups for a set amount of time before competing in a random event like racing on a track, high-jumping, destruction derby, ect. It's awesome when you're insanely overpowered for the event.

Retro Racer in Timesplitters 3, neat little 2 player top-down racing game, Anaconda was pretty good too, because it was basically 4 player Snake.

For some reason I really like the Insectotron stuff in Rogue Galaxy too, which was basically a cross between pokemon style insects and chess.

And quite how Tekken bowling from Tekken Tag never made this list, I have no idea.

Just out of curiosity, what was the newest game anyone can remember that had a mini game in it? I can't think of anything this generation

Beers and Binary . . . Triple Triad is WAY better than Tetra Master. Dunno what y'all are smoking. Played TTA online for like 3 years it was that addicting. >>

Rollerblade Racing in Megaman Legends is one of my all-time favorite mini games mainly because it's so damn hard and so satisfying when you get the fastest time required.

For me it definitely goes to Blitzball , freakin' loved that game, I was a blitz fiend! You could play for hours making your team stronger/better, customizing them, leveling them up and going for some rad prizes in tournaments. Viva la blitz!

I don't know if anyone else remembers from Rayman 3 Hoodlum Havoc, but I was REALLY took a liking to the audiosurf-esque minigame with the groooovy backdrop. Screw Raving Rabbids.

Also, having recently played Dark Cloud 2, Speda was an addicting minigame, it was great that shots could be made with up to like 15 shots at one time, with a vortex that was really close, but still being possible to make it with only 5 shots, as shown by my friend.

Yeah I have to admit, FF8's card game was ridiculously addictive and fun and I would also like to add Karaoke from Yakuza and Blitzball from FFX but anything else I really cant remember..

kudos on adding triple triad. i wasted so many hours on that game in ff8 and in real life cuz one of my friends bought me a few decks of the cards. now i wanna go dig them out and play again. i also really enjoy any game that includes a pool minigame. i used to play it all the time in star trek academy on the sega genesis and i do in gta 4.

Very pleased to see Xenogears in the list. Never played it but I remember spending long hours watching my brother go through it.
    Triple Triad as well.

That Vensito clip was hilarious, and watching that minigame is making me realize how much I miss playing Dark Cloud 2 or owning it.

"getting rid" of a "time distortion" by hiting a "fragment" doesnt make a whole lotta sense. doesnt sound safe either. and that condor soulda ate them.
