While I have argued forever that I want Link and the other characters in the Zelda universe to talk, I still feel this was a bad way to go for Metroid. As I mentioned in a previous comment, "if Samus is talking, then that means she has someone to talk to" -- and something about that just feels wrong. The atmosphere of a Metroid game owes in large part to the isolation of Samus. There is something beautifully haunting and mysterious about being alone on a vast alien world.

I wouldn't complain so much if the voice acting was purely soliloquy, but as the trailer shows, Samus is clearly talking to other people at parts. Voiced soliloquy could have been a really amazing way to add depth to her character. Having Samus awkwardly talk to herself as she tries to understand or possibly even communicate with the alien life would have been remarkable. What if Samus personified a baby metroid the way Tom Hank did his volleyball in the film, Castaway? Perhaps this could have been an interesting way to explore the frightening depths of isolation and loneliness.

But instead we get cheesy voice over to (what looks like) a cheesy, anime inspried story? The voice actress is bad and the writing is even worse. What happened to Jennifer Hale?

Bah, I'll comment more when we see more.

What are your thoughts?

Well ive always wished samus, link and other characters could talk and when i heard samus will be talking i thought itd be awesome but now that i see this, this voice insecure of herself, awkward and flat, something that samus personality does not fit i think even my 10 year old sister could sound better than this, wtf!

I'm not that bothered. I just hope the game still has the awesome atmosphere and exploration we saw in the previous games.

The idea of Samus delivering soliloquies sounds awesome, but they are clearly going in the wrong direction with having her interact with other people.

Eh, I agree, though. While it's nice that Nintendo is making an effort to improve the Metroid series and give the game a deeper story, I don't think Team Ninja is the right place to go to. That Samus looks nothing like the Samus in SSB: Brawl, and the story just seems uninteresting, but there's so much to be done in Metroid.

I think it is very interesting to take this approach. I do agree it seems that the VA and writing is terrible. I do hope they revise it somehow. A whole new take on Metroid games is what I like to call it.

Letting Team Ninja do a story? They must be mad. Not very optimist myself, it's clear that Samus is a woman of few words and I think that's how it should stay. Characters don't need to blurt out their feelings and their past in a cut-scene for us to understand them.

I was too busy looking at the animation to pay attention to the voice acting. For a Wii game, that was a pretty damn impressive trailer. If they could make a Wii game look like that, I have hope for it again.

What are my thoughts about the voice work? Pretty much that.

It is to early to say the voice acting is bad. Just saying, it's a fucking trailer for god sakes.

I'm sorry, I think that video was mislabeled. Where is the Metroid video?

Oh...that is it? Yeah, that's not what I was hoping for. Honestly, I didn't think having Team Ninja working on a Metroid game was a good idea.

i think an awesome way of doing both things would be for samus to be in isolation but with flashback cutscenes of her life. it would also help show contrast between the situations your in.

I have never played a Metroid game so perhaps my opinion is useless, but from what Brad says I agree that if Samus were to begin speaking it should be to herself and not with that voice actress. The idea of finding a copping mechanism such as creating a imaginary friend or a split personality appeals to me. I've heard from many others about the Metroid series and I get the impression that Samus is somewhat of a One-Woman army and just from this trailer that impression is dismissed. Something about her talking with others makes it feel like shes just another soldier. My impression of this game is it will be awkward.......but then again, I've never played a Metroid game.

What I liked about fusion was, because she had someone to talk to, the computer, she would respond to it and even argue when she knew something was off. However, she was a soldier and understood when and when not to challenge authority. Even her inner monolouge's made sense when they happened. They were always on elevators and maybe to her, they felt secure, a place where enemies could not get to, so she drops her gaurd there and only there.

In terms of the new character model, I really don't like the young look of her. In metroid prime, they gave Samus a mature, adult look that suited her hunter ways and how they revealed this was powerful, 1 last look at the world, not through the eyes of her visor, but through her own eyes. It gave me a sense that she may of regretted what she had done to get there and even what she did yet she knew it had to be done. Probably reading too much into it.

With Metroid other M, I really see metroid fans, not out right shunning it, but probably considering it to be worse then Hunters as far as metroid games goes (Hunters is bad regardless) but all I can do is hope that nintendo looked over what they made and changed things that needed to be changed. If there is no exploration, just linear rooms with a puzzle in some of them to get an item, I will be beyond pissed off.

Brad, with Metroid other M, im really understanding your take on Castlevania LoS, though I think of Other M worse by the fact that it appears this was going to be a Metroid game from the start.

Anyway, mini rant over and this would make a good discussion topic.

Having Samus speak may not be a bad thing overall; the soliloquy approach does seem best with this particular character since in the previous games, she is usually isolated on an alien inhabbited planet. My problem, however, is not with the fact that she is talking, or talking to someone, but the way they portray her character as she speaks. "I was scared"? Why the fuck would Samus ever be scared? She clearly never seemed scared when she was blowing the shit out every living creature she saw, in the games. They just turned a badass character into a crybaby 13 year old girl, at least that's what the trailer makes it sound like.

From the looks of this trailer, this game is going to be heavily focused on story and in previous metroid games, who ever gave a donkey's diseased dick, about story? The main point of the game was to go around and fuck up any creature in sight. But if the game was to be story driven, then soliloquies would be the best option. As Brad commented above, Samus talking to herself in the isolated world, would be interesting. One series of games, where I believed this worked very well, were the soul reaver games. Raziel speaking to himself whenever he approached something of importance really made the game's story great. This style of narration could have worked well on an isolated world with Samus.

I guess that's my ran as well. Still think Samus being afraid is bullshit.

Ok first off take Samus's look in Metroid Prime, put it in your mind and keep it there, got it? Good. Now Metroid Prime took place rather early on in the metroid series while on the other hand Metroid Other M takes place between Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion making it the second to last game in the time line and all I can say is how the hell do they get away making her look young and speak young!? I thought that the voice actress from Super Smash Bros. Brawl did a great job with her taunts, they were cold and mature which is what Samus is and that whole "I was Scared" bit I think that was a reference to Mother Brain in Super? For a first trailer it Does not bring much hope so hopefully SOMETHING can be done before release but I doubt it

Lastly It's Team Ninja, im not really as suprised as I should be. I predicted this afterall *Meh*

Honestly I think this game is going to dissapoint a lot of people. As people will associate it with the amazing 3d metroid series, and this game doesn't seem to fit into that series. also I believe that this will simply be a bad, or mediocre game.

And honestly, I agree with what Brad is saying about the VA. I doesn't suit that universe.

But hey, the games not out yet so I will wait and see. For all we know this could be the best game in the series.

and also why do we even care about the story elements, they should not be the focus of a metroid game, it should always be about exploration and puzzles. I loved exploring those planets, but I never gave a shit about why I was exploring them

I would be fine with a verbal outlet or silent companion just so long as its name and function isn't Zach.
