I officially decided to once again take a hit for the team. Despite my somewhat mixed feelings toward the broken multiplayer demo and the advice given to me by Brad, I will be picking up Aliens Vs. Predator on day one. While I value Brad's opinion and trust him quite a bit when it comes to games, I can't just abandon a franchise I have loved since my childhood. The Alien films captured my imagination as a child and this is finally my opportunity to dive into that world and interact with it first hand. There were several key thoughts that I had that eventually tipped the scales in the game's favor and a few questions I intend to get answered.
- Based on the complaints we lodged against the multi-player demo, most notably the terrible disadvantage that kill animations leave you in, I can't help but feel that the negative review scores are being brought down because of the unbalanced multi-player modes and the awkward control schemes. (I played Call of Cthulu for god sakes, it doesn't get much more awkward than that)
- If nothing else, the game approaches story telling from an interesting perspective. None of the alien or predator films have really put the audience behind the eyes of the alien. Sure, the original AvP games tried this but the stories from the film have always been told from the perspective of a terrified human. It will be interesting, to say the least, to see how Rebellion has tried to get the player to connect with these creatures. Albeit, this can very easily prove to be a disaster but I think it deserves a chance.
- Atmosphere, atmosphere, atmosphere. If done right, this game can deliver atmosphere in spades. Given the fact that I just purchased some surround sound headphones, I really have a desire to play just about anything with impressive sound design and visuals. Being able to hear Aliens scurrying through vents and the dreadful clicks of the predator language will be enough to warrant a purchase for someone like me.
So there you have it, I will be giving Rebellion the benefit of the doubt and hoping for a pleasant surprise when the game hits stores on Feb. 16, 2010. It doesn't hurt that I managed to find 4 relatively undesirable games in my collection to trade in towards the purchase. Honestly, I didn't really pay anything out of my own pocket so why the hell not? I suppose the worst that could happen is it fails terribly and I trade it back in for $25 towards my next purchase.
Pray for me,
Nick

You compared it to Call of Cthulu. We're not gonna see the end of this game for two years, are we, Nick?

You never learn, do you?

I myself am hyped for this game, I'm a big fan of the Alien(s) series and the first AvP games were good fun. I've played the demo and the only downside I could see was the fact that they had chosen a gametype the game obviously wasn't built for (Alien vs Alien and Marine vs Marine sucks). I'll be sticking to the other team based gametypes, which should be great with some friends.

hell maybe this game isn't as bad as people think anyways im looking forward to u playing on the feed & ur impressions of the game

This is probably just gonna end up with the same results when Nick purchased Wet first day I bet.

So you're shelling around 120 bucks on both Dante's inferno and AVP without taking the time to even try them out safely (or renting)? Damn, that's kinda of a shame :|

Whatever don't listen to them Nick. Most of these Philistines haven't taken the time to learn how to block or even figure out how the close combat is supposed to be fought! Plus deathmatch has always been the weakest part of the series, it baffles me as to why they didn't do a Species or even Team Deathmatch demo.

Hey, if you can trade in cruddy games and get this for little to no money, then as you said, why the hell not?
Now if you were buying the game full price, that would be a different story.
I will hold you and AVP in my prayers, for I too was hoping the best for this game and the Multiplayer demo had me very dissapointed.

Why not just wait and rent it? There are countless other games that deserve your support over this near guaranteed turd.
14 years, 9 months ago
yeah you should definitely rent this game rather than buying it, I mean its not like the multiplayer is any good.

i love how everyone is like "oh multiplayer is bad" YOU ARE PLAYING A DEMO there is a difference between a demo and when the game is released...and as ratfoot said...learn the fucking controls
14 years, 9 months ago
I am glad your getting this Nick. Despite what Brad and his followers have to say about AvP. While Multiplayer may suck, there still is a story mode which could turn out cool.

I agree with both HannibalLeon and Sammonoske. Who gives a rats butt what other people think. I beleive its going to be a sum what awesome game. Just remember what everyone thought about the RE:5 demo, and now look at them. There buying the Gold edition. Well If you play it on the nick feed I'll be sure to watch

xerotwo: This is what I do, I play games for more than just my entertainment. I play them to give my impressions and people like you make decisions. It's what we do. Not to mention, didn't spend anything on AvP and I played the demo at home and a demo at E3 of Dantes Inferno, so I know what i'm getting into with that one.

Fuck Year!
The story mode can;t be that bad, Nick. I'm giving it a rental, though......multiplayer just aint my thang

Game over man! Game over!
Would be more inclined to buy it if monolith was involved. As a longtime fan of the series, I want to support it but at the same time do not want to support crap games.
As is, there are too many high profile games coming out... I will wait for reviews myself, though with the current trend of idiotic ratings and brown noses, (ME2 > :( DAO is now their flagship rpg series imo) I may just end up trying it myself as well.
AvP2 was one of my top games of all time if not solely due to the balanced multiplayer. With good players, the three species with corps thrown in for four faction tdms were unpredictibly fun sessions. Throw in classes, exosuits, varying alien types and their abilities due to species kills, and armored queens with enough kills and the game could change drastically. I won't even get into how amazing headshot only clan matches could be...
Haven't tried the demo yet though and am not sure a blocking aspect was something the series needed as you can't really block acid sprayback or plasma shots... not to mention bullets, grenades, and rockets...
A majority of other things could have been implemented, co-op senarios, so some useless additions like blocking and kill animations are depressingly huge red flags...

Well...good luck and god speed, Nick.

im getting it only for single player i think marine campain gonna creep me out

I have seen the demo and personally i cant wait to try the predator story mode on that game. The thrill of terrifying the computer idiots as they shoot and scream in fear as I hunt them and silently take them out ONE BY ONE. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA (best of luck nick I hope to see you on the field of alien battle) >:)

All I can assume from this is Nick being extremely desperate to get this game, thinking that it'll be the end of the world as we know it :|

I don't get where the hate for this game is coming from. This is obviously a step forward, especially in the surprisingly robust melee combat, for the AvP series, and, despite my dislike of the FFA deathmatch mode, I foresee multiplayer being extremely enjoyable. I've probably played about ten hours of the demo so far, and I've found the combat in general to be surprisingly well-balanced, and the combat being an entirely unique experience in this games generation. There are only so many Call of Duty knockoffs that I can stomach.
AvP's multiplayer is difficult to get into, I'll grant you that, but I see no reason why this game, especially in multiplayer, should not garner high praise for its myriad of modes, sharply contrasting character classes, and refreshing, yet old-school, gameplay mechanics.
I respect Brad's opinion a great deal in general, but it's obvious that he hasn't given this game any kind of a real chance. His immaturity is showing, just as it does whenever Street Fighter is discussed, and I recommend everyone take a break and form your own opinions. Criticizing Castlevania based on it's developer's pedigree and flaws shown in gameplay videos is one thing, but AvP is a much-loved franchise with an especially strong following on the PC, and its developer has shown that, if nothing else, they know what makes an AvP game good.
IGN UK has already given it an 8.5, and Game Informer never had review cred to begin with. Kudos to you, Nick, for deciding to pick this game up. Now stop being ashamed of it.

I believe most of the hate comes from the horrible multiplayer demo. The way I see it, if the game's single player is like the ones from the old games, it'll be fun. I liked playing as all 3 in the original. The ability to cloak and surprise humans as the predator with the classic weapons, being able to attack from any angle as the alien, and even the suspense from playing as a human in an alien infested base, not knowing when a xenomorph was gonna pop down and kill you or one of those face huggers killing you instantly.
Granted, I'm not going to pick up the game, but hopefully you enjoy the game enough to warrant it's purchase.

What, in the demo, is horrible? I hear that thrown around a lot and, aside from the terrible choice of FFA deathmatch (same species killing each other = sadface), I don't see it. Do elaborate.

Horrible matchmaking, pc version at least, overpowered "execution" attacks that you can hit from, as one of my friends put it, 100 feet away that leaves you open for someone to do the exact same to you. Because of the animation leaves you wide open, there are some games where all that happens is those "execution" moves after execution moves resulting in a bad experience for most gamers that I've talked to that's played the demo.

I support you Nick, I am going to pre order this tomorrow, and like you I am trading in games for it. Hope it turns out good.

@pfcparts It's primarily a melee combat game not a shooter.

This is going to be the second coming of Wet for Nick. Next show you'll hear him blushingly wonder what the hell made him dump $60 on this when he could have given it to another game, and why the hell he didn't just do what sensible people would have done and at least tried the game first. Be that as it may, it bears repeating that there is no advantage whatsoever to a purchase over a rental of this game. Silly boy!

Honestly, I don't think Nick has anything to worry about. As I am almost certain that the single player campaigns will be well executed, and in particular the marines campaign will be like playing through alien and aliens. It seems that this time round the single player campaign will be the focus.
I don't think this god awful multiplayer demo should be enough to bring down the rest of the game. But again I still don't think people should decide that a game is going to be bad until after the game has been released. *cough*castlevania*cough*
