So this is the leaked footage of (possibly canceled) Final Fantasy: Fortress that GRIN studios was working on. Yes... the GRIN that made Bionic Commando (the 2d remake and 3d version), Wanted, and that recent Terminator movie game. The studio has since been shut down and this video is of an early prototype build. SquareEnix has retained the rights and assets to this game, but who knows if this project will ever see the light of day.

It has been confirmed from the leaked artwork (see below), that this was indeed set in the Final Fantasy 12 universe. SquareEnix seems fond of this universe as this would have been the second sequel to Final Fantasy 12 (remember Revenant Wings?), and the fifth game in this lizard man and bunny girl infested, stupid version of Ivalice.

My best guess is that, being called "Fortress", the game might have been (be?) something along the lines of a Final Fantasy: Battlefront. Since the project was being outsourced to a Western developer, I think there is a good chance the game would have had a strong online component. Pick different classes and storm an oposing online? Sounds kinda cool. Then again, it may have been a much less ambitious concept and have been more along the lines of those Lord of the Rings (quality) brawlers from last console generation. Either way, it's hard to believe SquareEnix would have handed the reigns of a full blown action RPG sequel to a western developer.

Who knows, with SquareEnix's recent purchase of Eidos, this project may still end up in western hands.

Brad

P.S. If you look closely you will see that the monster in the video is indeed wielding a club with three little Bombs on the end. And for the record, that is fucking awesome.

Let's hope it sees a release, and then a glorious and prosperous overseas shipping.

Oooh. Much cleaner and prettier than FFXI. Also deeply appreciate the ability to use your weapon on a chocobo.. crap. This could've been good.

Maybe some folks from GRIN moved over to work on FFXIV. Or with them swallowing Eidos in a gulp, it could get a Hitman/TR feel? Oooh. Exciting, now.

Wow, that actually looked really good. I hope a new developer picks this along with Battlefront 3 back up.

The trailer does indeed look neat and all, but it doesn't seem very... final fantasy. The gameplay looks like it's straying from its traditional turn based combat into something I would seem from Demon's Souls. Perhaps this may be good otherwise.

To bad they closed, this could have been a very promising game. Even if it is final fantasy or not it looks pretty good.

I immediately thought DEMON'S SOULS too, for some reason.

We can be sure that if Squenix thinks they'll make money off this, they'll revive it come hell or high water.

Yeah, I saw the picture prior to clicking Play and thought of Demon's Souls. No doubt.

I would love to see this come out, This would prolly be a nice merger to lure in a new crowd of people into Final Fantasy

Yeah this did indeed stroke my Demon's Souls wiener.

Fuck, an open world Final Fantasy game set in Ivalyce with Demon's Souls-esque combat would be pretty amazing if done well.
