Uh...

Two things.

1. This new (Platinum Games developed) space marine game sort of looks like a shooter. And while some Japanese developed shooters certainly entertain, it's not an exaggeration to say that most of the thriving titles in the genre were developed in the West.

2. While Shinji Mikami has directed some of the finest pieces of interacted media ever pressed to disc (Resident Evil 1, 4, Godhand, etc), he does have one stain in his amazing portfolio. And sadly, this trailer is by far most reminiscent of said stain. And let's be honest...

At least the stain had a nicer butt.

The character design in Vanquish seems like a desperate attempt to appeal to the Western market. Iron Man, Halo, Crysis... it just looks so derivative. Even the dude in the suit looks uninspired. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up being voice by Nolan North. I was expecting a spiritual successor to Resident Evil, and hoping for a spiritual successor to Godhand. Guess I was wrong.

That new Tecmo Gears knockoff, the Front Mission shooter, Castlevania developed by the Jericho tards, the "Western focused" Capcom projects... So many games are being made "for the West" and often even "in the West". When are Japanese studios going to realize that what we want are more games like Bayonetta? Sure games like Resident Evil 5 and Metal Gear Solid 4 were more "Western" in their control design, but those were most likely successful because of the pedigree of the franchise from their previous installments. Can anyone think of any Japanese developed new IPs designed "for the West" that were successful? Dead Rising is the only game coming to mind for me, and even the sequel is being made in Canada.

I will keep an open mind.

Brad

P.S. 03. You couldn't move and shoot in P.N.03. In fact, I don't think you can move and shoot in any game he's ever made. HAHA.

p.N.03 wasn't AS bad as some people claimed it to be. its not amazing but its still a descent game if your in the right mind set.
Anyway, i got more of a Dead Space vibe when i watched the trailer though that may be me thinking it will be lik eRE4. who knows. just gotta wait for the next trailer or any footage with gameplay.

But ever since Resident Evil 5 came out, we all hate Resident Evil 4 now. After all, you can't move and shoot at the same time.

And where are you seeing Dead Space??

the dead space part comes from the moment where the tech creature comes out. I know it was just a random encounter but i got a dead space vibe from it, from the looks of it, on a space ship by yourself, creatures want you dead, and thearmor he wore reminds me of a cross between the dead space armor and Dark Sector's armor, with a heavy dose of P.N. 03 for the world.

When I first saw the trailer it immediately made me think of PN03 as well. That being said, the only thing I really remember about my experiences with PN03 at this point was wishing some of those character animations were in a different game.

Even if the game turns out to be a shooter I'm still willing to at least give it a shot, pun unintended. After all, Shinki Mikami is responsible for making one of the two shooters that I actually enjoyed.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I will try any game that Mikami or Platinum Games releases, but this was just a little disappointing to me.

I was expecting a new take on survival horror honestly.

From the trailer it looks like they're going straight for the money. I can't blame them for that too much though, it's about time Platinum Games (and previously Clover) had a true money maker under their belt. As long as they maintain that Japanese flare that something like Metal Gear Solid retains.

I was equal parts confused and underwhelmed when I saw this teaser. Absolutely not what I was expecting.
I like to think of best-case(for me) and worst-case scenarios when it comes to stuff like this, while of course, in this case, keeping an open mind since it's Shinji Mikami and P* after all.

Worst case: A very awkward attempt to appeal to the west with a game that has none of the trademarks and things we love and come to expect from Mikami, Platinum Games and japanese developed games overall. A game that highlights just how far behind japanese devs are compared to western devs when it comes to making these kind of shooters.

Best case: An actually charming and unique take on the whole "space marine shooter" thing that reeks of the trademarks and awesomeness that is Mikami and Platinum games. A game with surprisingly solid shooting mechanics(for a japanese shooter) an original story and memorable characters that you actually care about. Tons of interesting weapons and fun unlockables during and after you beat the game. Badass superstylized cutscenes and a fun "campy" feel throughout the game (although, the trailer seemed awfully serious in the typical western-space-shooter way, but you never know).

It looks pretty meh, but it's in trailer form, so it may be surprising on a game-play level. I don't blame The East for appealing to the West, since that's where video game sales are probably the highest, but why not try to balance enough money from sales to develop the quality titles, so that The Western titles(I.E. Dead Rising, Lost Planet, maybe this.) can evolve, while good games, like Yakuza 3, can prosper to the levels of popularity that people in the West give a damn.

I do think that the look is a more normal compared to the other P* games, and it certainly seems like a shooter. But I will hold my opinions until we see gameplay. I have a lot of faith in Mikami(after all the man is a genius) and Atsushi Inaba(Okami producer), definitely expecting this cliche-esque genre a new(perhaps revolutionary) spin to it.

Also btw forget Halo, wouldn't it be pretty freakin' awesome if Metroid was a possible inspiration for this game?

"When are Japanese studios going to realize that what we want are more games like Bayonetta?"

that would depend. but i rather not see that happen.

A new take on survival horror was what I've been anticipating as well. Although if he wishes to dabble in something new, no complaints here. Best case scenario is that this could turn out to be really fun.

It might be hopeful of me to think he could have been inspired by Half-Life.~ Maybe.

well. it's shinji mikami. he's batshit crazy.
so it's likely that the game will be batshit crazy. and i like batshit crazy things. i will be disappointed if it's not.
    batshit.

Yeah i was expecting something else too but still im interested in this, cmon is Mikami he completely change the way resident evil plays with RE4 and not only resident evil but also other shooters he might change and revolutionize the genre of the shooters with this game too, but like you said it looks an attempt to make a western ironman or crysis game

Maybe it's a satire on western first person shooters? I know, I am kind of thinking outside of the box here but...so does Platinum.

Underwhelming is definitely what I got watching the teaser trailer for the new project. They're going to have to show me how this game is original and different. Until then, this just appears like another marine in super high tech armor fighting bad guys. Prove me wrong Mikami. Please.

Wasn't Demons Souls sorta designed for the west? That was really sucsessful.
That robot game didn't look that bad for a gamecube game, but the way the robot danced around was pretty lame imo. Btw; isnt the purpose of not being able to move and shoot to make the game more scary or tense?

I'm sure you know by now that Shinji Mikami is one of my favorite developers.

Mikami himself said he was disappointed with P.N. 03 and said he would have liked to put more time and effort into it during an interview if I remember correctly. One of the main complaints about that game were that you couldn't move and shoot as well interestingly enough.

I feel like VanQuish is him trying to redeem himself for his errors in making P.N. 03. I'm hoping that this title will blow me away and not just be a generic shooter made to appease the western market.

I'm not too surprised that this is the direction he decided to take. Unlike you however I kind of expected a spiritual successor to God Hand and was hoping for a reinvention of the survival genre instead. It was obviously going to be a new IP and I figured he'd go back to projects that had received mixed reviews and work from there, God Hand would be at the top of this list.

I wouldn't lose hope for a spiritual successor to God Hand though, If I remember correctly there is still supposed to be a Shinji Mikami and Suda 51 collaboration in the works. That could very well be what you're waiting for.

As for me, I'm excited that this project has finally been revealed, now we just have to wait for a release date and further information.

Wait and see for some in-game footage and more details, but yeah...Random Space Marine #18363 doesn't exactly light my enthusiasm either.
