I did not watch the VGA awards. Instead, I enjoyed commentary and announcements through Twitter from various industry insiders. Ultimately, I am pleased with the number of high profile premiers at the show this year and that is all that matters. Here are the major trailers and a few brief thoughts on each:
Easily my biggest surprise of the show. While I agree with Brad's concerns involving the quick turnaround, I was so impressed with the original AA that the fact that a sequel even exists has me excited. With that said, I hope that this game isn't due until 2011. Rocksteady should really work hard to make this game stand apart from the original while continuing to refine the impressive gameplay mechanics from the first.
I wasn't a huge fan of the gameplay in the original Force Unleashed but the story was solid enough to ensure my excitement for the sequel. The trailer sure is pretty but I hope the dev team changes up the combat significantly by adding deeper upgrade mechanics and making the combat feel less like a button masher. But honestly... who didn't see this coming.
Crackdown 2 looks sickeningly cool. There is a jet pack and some kind of crazy sticky tether weapon!! That is really all that I pulled from the new trailer. But the game looks promising. Can't wait!
Are you kidding? Is this game on the PSP!? Bad graphics is one thing, but bad typography?? That is unforgivable!
Tron was not part of my childhood. I honestly don't even know the premise. The game looks kind of cool but can anyone clarify for me or sum up what Tron actually is? And as a follow up question, does this game look like a good adaptation of that universe?
I like the trailer for the new True Crime but there are several key points where I said: WTF! The cinematic approach to the game looks pretty interesting but I can't help but feel like I would just be better off waiting for Yakuza 3. O well, crime drama's are all the rage now and I'm sure I will give this game a go.
I don't know about you guys, but this game looks like the most intriguing shooter since CoD:MW or Gears of War. The new Medal of Honor looks good but this looks like it could be big. Add this to my list of most anticipated games of 2010/2011!
I think we can officially say that MW has become the game that most shooters aspire to be. That is not necessarily a bad thing by any stretch of the imagination. I'll admit, the last scene in this trailer was really effing cool.
That is all for now, there are a few trailers I left out, most notably, Halo Reach but I will make a full fleshed out post about that game later. Green Day Rock Band is cool but I really have no desire to watch a trailer for a game like that. All in all, the show did not disappoint. The games that were revealed tonight will stay on the top of my radar until their release. Who knows, maybe next year I will actually watch the show!
P.S.- Best soundtrack goes to DJ hero!? Tim Schafer has been robbed!
P.P.S.- Did I mention that we won the gaming category in the podcast awards?!

ya, im still pissed that they have best soundtrack and allow rythem games in there. There should be 2 seperate awards. Best ORIGINAL sound track, as in the music was made exclusively for the game, and then another for best licensed sound track for games that have no original music. this was we may start to see more unique choices for nominees for this, or people will be idiots and still have nominations for licensed music.
anyway, crackdown 2 looks fun and all i know about tron is the world of it is inside a computer or something, like the matrix but much more obvious that its a program

It's funny you should define music games soundtracks as versus soundtracks for other games that way, zekana, as Brutal Legend's music is completely licensed, whereas each mix in DJ Hero was created specifically for that game. Roughly a hundred commissioned tracks by a myriad of top-end DJs > licensed classic rock. DJ Hero absolutely deserves that award.
Also: Wolverine getting Best Performance by a Male and Best Cast is a travesty.

hey DJ hero deserves that award... umm the tron 2.0 game was pretty good... idk if it was a good adaptation to the move though... i would have to go see it to make my decision

All those games sound promising especially True Crime, I've been waiting for that series to hit next-gen consoles however....me being a huge fan of music games, I have seriously lost all respect for Harmonix. Green Day Rock Band? Really guys? I mean theres much better modern bands they could of used instead of Green Day. Just saying...>_>

Just noticed a Two Face poster in the Batman trailer: It has a picture of Harvey Dent and it says: "We want you"

Yeah I was fucking pissed off DJ Hero won the soundtrack award. But this might be biased, being a metalehad I fapped over Brutal Legend's soundtrack. UFC winning the sports award was no surprise. They're sponsored by Spike after all.
I was gladly surprised that MW2 didn't win GOTY. Should have been L4D2 in my opinion, but it's still a lot more than I expected from Spike.

hm, trastan has a point i suppose. though remixed and redone together, it can qualify as original so in that regard, im ok with it getting the sound track award

I loved the little Two Face as Uncle Sam poster, cool little easter egg. I kind of hope Arkham Asylum 2 will pull a little bit from the graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns and age the characters a little. It seems like they have with The Joker and the Batman logo being broken down at the end could hint at an older Bruce Wayne which would be cool I think.
Spec Ops looks very promising. The world looks incredible and that kind of world is defiantly one I want to explore some more. The sandstorm blowing through the disheveled buildings might have already made that game a play (at least) for me.

To sum up the Tron movie, form my most recent viewing of it (which was half asleep last summer);
A programmer working for a company makes a bunch of cool games, but is then locked out of the system by a colleague, who then takes credit for the work. The bastard in the scenario ends up as an executive, while the programmer who made the games begins work at an arcade.
The programmer attempts to hack in to the company's network in an attempt to expose the fraud, but the network's protection bot (the Master Control Program, or MCP), catches him and he is forced out of the system. The MCP, on execu-douche's authority, shuts down all access to the network for people with the same authorization, hoping to make certain that the programmer won't be able to make it in again.
This also locks out another programmer, Alan, who had been working on a program to monitor the MCP's communications (the security program is named Tron).
The MCP reveals its plans to take over the pentagon, and then blackmails execudouche into helping.
Alan attempts to warn the first programmer, Flynn, but Flynn manages to convince Alan to try to forge a new authorization code for him.
This leads to Alan being digitzed via laser, and he becomes part of the company's network. He eventually teams up with Tron, and they eventually stop the MCP.
It's a great movie, and if you haven't seen it, I really suggest you do.
As for how well the trailer portrays the universe... Well, it certainly looks like a very pretty version of the world, that's for certain, but other than that, I can't really tell a whole lot about the game. I certainly will play it though.

That Batman trailer has me pumped. I do hope that they give Rocksteady enough time to fully flesh out the game though.

More like the original Medal of Honor is what most games aspire to be.

Also, after all of the updates and support for Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead the past year, along with L4D2, I'm surprised Valve didn't get best developer.

Force Unleashed had a story?
Gameplay was the only thing it had going for it...

Tron is personal favourite of mine.
A really simple sum up of the setting would be: A world inside your computer where programs make up the population the way people do in the real world. Everything's all glowy and high-tech futuristic. They play games involving motorcycles and discs that ultimately end in the deletion of the losing program which is essentially death
There's a plot involving corruption and kind of interesting characters but the movie was mainly popular for being a ahead of its time in effects and concept =]
And the game looks okay in relation to the series, but I worry it would never be able to stand on it's own...I'll just have to wait until I play it I guess =]

Brütal Legend lost...to DJ Hero?
For "Best Soundtrack?"

shotokanguy.... I think u got that all backward. The gameplay in the Force Unleashed was a shallow mess of a button masher. The story was really well written easily that games strongest asset. Hopefully SWTFU2 will change the combat dramatically and make it deep and rewarding. Maybe involve some skill...?

O and in all honesty, Flower probably could have won best soundtrack... wow, now that I think about, there haven't been that many great original game soundtracks this year. LOL. But the metalhead in me wanted Brutal Legend to win but I think the award should always go out to ORIGINAL soundtracks.
